Kuranda Scenic Railway 15 carriages
The answer you've all been waiting for! Thanks everyone for your answers to our Train Trek Trivia post yesterday. π π
The answer to the question, how many carriages does our longest train have is: 15 carriages
That's right! The train running from Gimuy (Cairns) to Ngunbay (Kuranda) at 9:30am and then back to Cairns from Kuranda at 3:30pm has 12 Heritage Class carriages, two Gold Class carriages and one accessible carriage. π
Originally built in 1909, our carriages were unique to the Cairns area and may have been the only vehicles of their type to operate in Australia at that time. They were known as βGrandstandβ cars and were specifically intended for use by tourists travelling to Kuranda. Today, these heritage timber beauties host more than 300,000 guests between Cairns and Kuranda each year. πΏπ

Buda-Dji pulling into Freshwater station
Our Buda-dji locos carry the visuals from a powerful ancient dreamtime story told by Traditional Owners of the land we traverse π
Buda-dji is the carpet snake who, in the dreamtime, carved out the Barron River and the creeks that join onto it, from the coast to the Tablelands. β°οΈ He travelled many times along the Barron Gorge with his beautiful Nautilus shells and bartered these with different clan groups along the river for dilly bags, eel traps and other useful items.
