What a wonderful morning hosting a lovely group of people from NSW. One of the highlights was visiting the amazing galleries of our dynamic local artist Eleonora Pulcini. They were blown away with her works and also those of the local artists Eleonora is showcasing in her original EP Gallery.

If you are looking for some affordable and original art by local artists, such as the wonderful Sakura Fisher, then you must visit EP Gallery. You can contact me directly for a private viewing of either, or both, of Eleanor's galleries ๐Ÿ˜€

Crikey it's been a busy time over the past couple of weeks here at WWT central hosting so many people from all over Australia and the world! And all of them have been enthralled and amazed at the experiences I provided for them. And my new people mover has been a bonus providing a courtesy pick up/drop off service. It has made things a lot more convenient and easier for me and my guests!

When walking around our beautiful city I often come across previously unseen laneways that are just begging to be explored... and this is one of them. It leads to an amazing private residence so I didn't venture too far in.

However, from other publicly accessible vantage points it can be viewed from different angles. From what I have found out so far is that it is owned by someone in Germany or possibly France and has a caretaker in residence. Another research project ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm always very pro-active in promoting local businesses in Launceston and highlight many of them to my guests along the way on my experiences of our wonderful little city. I also provide many of my guests with an extensive information package about not just places to eat and drink but much more about things to do and places to see in and around Launceston.

I also love promoting businesses in our wonderful Quadrant Mall and many of you know that I'm working closely with Eleonora Pulcini, of EP Gallery and Experintia Populi, to do just that. And make the Quadrant a place of culture and history. As such I'm chuffed that the Examiner printed my correspondence about the excellent foodie places in the Quadrant Mall!

Another busy day here at WWT central that started with providing an on-coach history commentary for a wonderful group from Christians Travel. As part of the experiences I had also organised morning tea at Franklin House that the wonderful volunteers catered to. In addition to their lovely scones, tea and coffee I also organised to have some delightful slices and cream sponge cake from the amazing ladies at the CWA Shop.

After that I hosted Virginnia and Allan from Sydney on my journey through Ye Olde Launceston and they were absolutely enthralled and entertained by what I provided them with!

Phew, it was a bit of a hot one under the top hat ๐ŸŽฉ today! I started with a lovely group from California on a short journey through Ye Olde Launceston who were guests of Tours Around Tasmania.

After that I had three wonderful people from England. One of them had a personal connection as one of her ancestors was the Mayor of Launceston in 1894...and it was amazingly fortunate that the section in the Town Hall with the photos board of mayors in it was open! My guests were also gifted some lapel pins by a great LCC person ๐Ÿ™‚

Here at WWT central I don't provide tours, I create unmatched memorable experiences!

On a rare day off and doing another walk around the suburbs of Launceston with my history hounds we came across another little known gem of history and architecture. A bit of research shows it is Newstead House in, well, Newstead. Built in 1856 it was the residence of the famous botanist Ronald Campbell Gunn.

Gunn had 15 children, 9 of them with his second wife Margaret whom he married in Tasmania in 1839. It is little known that Gunn also possessed a number of Tasmanian Aboriginal skulls. As he was a man of his time and a highly educated and respected man of science that wasn't unusual.

There is a statue of Gunn in the City Park.

Crikey it's been a manic couple of days here at WWT central! Yesterday not only was I a co-host with the amazing Eleonora Pulcini and our fusion of art and history, I also hosted a lovely couple from Auckland on my journey through Ye Olde Launceston. Little did I know that Anne is a budding artist and what an unexpected treat it was to visit the incredible artist Leoni Duff in her studio and gallery!

Today I began with hosting a wonderful couple from Albury on my journey through Ye Olde Launceston and this afternoon we were joined by Sarah and her family including 9 year old Luka on my exploration of our iconic Cataract Gorge. Being able to engage young kids is something I excel at and everyone was highly entertained and learnt a lot along the way ๐Ÿ˜Š

What a wonderful and incredibly busy day co-hosting with the amazing Eleonora Pulcini a new event that was a fusion of art and history in the Quadrant Mall. Eleonora was the prime mover and led a group of eager local artists, including the wonderfully talented Sakura, creating beautiful artworks. There was a great diversity of interpretations of the lavender theme!

It was also great to have Cake O'clock onboard with an incredibly delicious lavender and blueberry sponge cake! I cannot recommend them enough and don't just take my word for it, go to Cake O'clock and find out for yourself!

What a fantastic day hosting John from England on my combined experiences of Launceston and our iconic Cataract Gorge. John was a great fellow to host as he had so many questions about not just Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples histories and cultures, but also colonial history of Australia, including the First Fleet and the early history of colonisation.

As a former lecturer in Australian First Nations histories and cultures that was all up my alley as I have researched that all in great depth. John was most impressed and enjoyed his time with me immensely!

The street art of Launceston is fascinating and also evolving all the time. Of course, the mysterious Lord Scabar is the leader of that with their little doors, windows, houses and cat stencils that are to be found across our wonderful little city.

This isn't a Lord Scabar creation as far as I know but is slowly touring Launceston. It's a fascinating addition to our street art and just who is Grubby Leech?

Speaking of art, stand by for an announcement from myself and our amazing artist Eleonora Pulcini about something new and exciting to be held in the Quadrant Mall next Saturday!

Another busy week here at WWT central and one of my French guests had an eagle eye for some of the enigmatic Lord Scabar's little doors that I hadn't spotted before! How wonderful to find new ones and my guests were so chuffed to be the discoverers!

The works of the mysterious Lord Scabar are a feature of my city experiences and I also have a fascinating personal story about the works of the amazing street artist that is Launceston's own 'Banksy'!

What an amazing day that started with hosting a lovely couple from Wales, Dee and her husband, on my journey through Ye Olde Launceston. After that I went to my wonderful friend Eleonora Pulcini's Jurassic Park art experience in her incredible Experientia Populi Gallery in the Quadrant Mall.

As part of that the wonderful young artist Sakura was there and it was a real pleasure to not only meet her but buy one of her great paintings. It suited me perfectly being a Cataract Gorge scene. I love supporting local artists and that is more than just doing tours of their studios and galleries!

Our Story

Wallaby Walkabout Tours began in 2016 and is the creation of Tasmanian Aboriginal and local historian, Geoff McLean. Geoff is the primary guide and has many years experience lecturing and tutoring in Aboriginal Studies at the University of Tasmania where he also gained knowledge from various Elders.

As part of that knowledge, and his research into Aboriginal cultural connections to the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, Geoff was able to identify opportunities to share that knowledge through conducting guided walking and sightseeing tours of the Cataract Gorge in Launceston and the adjoining Trevallyn Reserve. Adding to that knowledge Geoff is also a local historian who has years of experience creating and providing guided walking tours of Launceston highlighting its heritage and the various intriguing characters involved.

Geoff is a master storyteller with an incredible depth of knowledge that enables him to intertwine 38 000 years of Aboriginal history with that of the more โ€˜recentโ€™ 212 years of European heritage, including the development of the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, into the wonderful attraction it is today. Geoff is also a โ€˜born and bredโ€™ Launceston fellow who grew up with the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, as an integral part of his life. As such he has unique personal connections, knowledge and stories to share about some of the more recent, and interesting, events that have added to the fabric of the Cataract Gorge in Launceston.
