🎄 A comfy, supportive pair of hiking boots or shoes - always wear them in before a big hike!
🎁 High quality socks that are good fitting and high wicking
🎄A day pack (25-35 litre capacity) - or a full size trekking pack (75 litre capacity) for full pack trekking
🎁 Good quality walking poles to aid balance and increase the enjoyment and longevity of your hikes
🎄 A pair of gaiters for added protection for the lower legs

The awards are the premier awards program in the Tasmanian tourism industry, and encourage and recognise innovation, excellence, quality and sustainability in tourism.
Tarkine Trails is entered in the Ecotourism category and we're hoping to one-up on last year's Silver award.
The preservation, conservation and presentation of takayna / Tarkine is of principal importance to Tarkine Trails, and we consider it a real privilege and honour to operate in the northwest Tasmanian wilderness.

Don't forget to look up!
Encompassing 447,000 hectares including stands of Huon Pine (one of the oldest living organisms, found nowhere else), vast giant eucalypt and myrtle forests, takayna is home to over 50 threatened species.
Until the early 2000s these forests were inaccessible for walkers. It is our privilege to showcase the region to our guests, and our responsibility to educate them on preserving it for the future.

It’s hard to comprehend the true size of takayna/The Tarkine.
We explore only a small portion of it, with the rainforest encompassing around half of this vast remote country along with sea misted dunes, large plains of high biodiversity button grass and mountains covered in forests.

Remember, less is more when it comes to packing for your Tarkine adventure.
As our Tarkine base Tiger Ridge operates completely off the grid, it gives a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in an ancient rainforest.
Being off the grid means we need to watch how we consume the limited power we do have. When it comes to packing, leave those power-hungry devices behind.

We are working on offsetting ALL carbon emissions. As over 98% of our guests come from interstate, we factor in offsetting the carbon emissions generated by our guests travelling to us via air and sea.
Our Tiger Ridge Eco Camp operates completely off-grid, collecting and storing solar power in a battery bank. It is also self-sufficient in water collection.
Our goal is to have a lifelong impact on our guests' conservation of natural resources.

Do you know why we use the names takayna and Tarkine? Takayna (pronounced tah-kye-nah) is the name of the traditional owners of the land and the people from the Sandy Cape-Pieman River area. We use the name takayna to pay our respects and acknowledgment of the traditional owners of the land we work, sleep and trek on.

Have you ever been walk-curious? Unsure if it’s for you but want to give it a go? The average age of our walkers is 55, with a median age of 60. We have hosted all genders. We have had walkers from all over Australia and overseas. We welcome people with all different walking abilities, and our team of expert guides are happy to answer any questions you may have before you decide to walk with us.
Our guides are so terrific we want to shout it from the Tarkine’s treetops! Feedback tells us that 85% of our guests rate the guide’s performance as amazing.
