What an amazing day was had by all on our behind-the-scenes tour of the Tamar Valley yesterday. The day started with a frosty morning but soon warmed up to a glorious day typical of a winters day in the Tamer. We couldn't have picked a better day for our tour
Our tour commenced with a warm cup of tea at our first stop which was Saint Matthias church in Windermere. The volunteers from the friends of the church group gave us an amazing tour of both the cemetery and the church. Special thanks to Judy, June and David for all of the information they were able to share with us

Then we are off to lunch going to Rosevears via the Batman bridge and along the way we were told many historical facts and funny stories about people in the area by our local historian Marion Sergeant. Marion who grew up in the area knew a lot about the Rosevears pub where we ended up for lunch.
After a delightful lunch we are off to a next stop! Who would've known that another award-winning Olive Grove was situated in Grindelwald. Allen, Barbara and the rest of the family team made us feel very welcome as we toured the Grove. Special thanks to Allen who came and gave a presentation on our coach for those of the group that couldn't make it into the Grove!
Our last stop of the day came as a surprise to many as well to know there was an incredible business specialising in maritime simulation located in Legana. We were treated to realistic simulations of critical training information that is needed by Maritime pilots from all types of businesses and all types of ships. This was a great way to demonstrate the diversity of businesses within the Taymar region. Right under our noses and we don't even know it sometimes. Again many thanks to Marion who continue to feed us bits of information along the way for the afternoon. An incredible day was had by all and we learned something new along the way. The new newsletter for the next six months of the year will be available shortly. If you would like to join McDermotts travel club and learn more about what tours we have on offer please contact our Legana office on business hours
Apologies if the photos are a little out of order today😊😊

Along with the wonders of the Wildflower season we hope to enjoy is a unique initiative that combines rural landscapes with creative art displays. This trail showcases the works of local artists, allowing visitors to experience the region's agricultural heritage and artistic talent.

Known as the Farm Gate Art Trail and situated in and around the shire of Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, the Farm Gate Art Trail involves local farmers and artists collaborating to display artworks on farming properties. These installations are set up at farm gates, hence the name, making art accessible to the public while highlighting the region's agricultural life.

The trail features a variety of artworks, including sculptures, paintings, and mixed media pieces. The themes often reflect the rural environment, local wildlife, and the natural beauty of the region.
The Farm Gate Art Trail near Hopetoun is a wonderful blend of art, agriculture, and community spirit, providing a unique way to experience the cultural and natural richness of the region.

Last Friday McDermotts Travel Club were invited to a factory tour at the fabulous historic Waverley Woollen Mills located in Launceston. We already had a group going out that day on a local lunch date and so they were treated to a private tour of the woollen mills by Kristi, Penny and the staff at the Mill.
How excited everyone was! and what a brilliant tour. We all learned something different and came away with a deeper understanding of what goes in to making a world class woollen product.
Afterwards we had the luxury of time to shop in the outlet onsite and I saw many an extra bag or two as we reboarded our coach to make our way to our yummy lunch at Clarendon Arms in Evandale! Good choice McDermotts! a lot of satisfied customers this day!

Did you know the Albany Whaling Station was the last operating whaling station in Australia. It ceased operations in 1978, marking the end of Australia's whaling industry.

The station began operations in 1952 and was run by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company. It played a major role in the local economy for over two decades.

After its closure, the station was converted into a museum known as the Albany's Historic Whaling Station. It is now a popular tourist attraction that educates visitors about the history of whaling and marine conservation, and it is one of our planned activities on our Western Australia tour this coming August.

Come with us to Broken Hill!

Known for its rich history, unique geography, and vibrant arts scene Broken Hill stands like a beacon beckoning all and sundry who visit..

We too, will succumb to her allure when we visit this July.

Broken Hill is famously known as the "Silver City" due to its extensive history of silver, lead, and zinc mining. The city was founded in 1883 after the discovery of a massive orebody, which led to the establishment of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP), one of the world's largest mining companies.

Broken Hill was the first city in Australia to be included on the National Heritage List. This recognition highlights its significance as a site of historical, cultural, and industrial importance.
The city boasts a wealth of historic buildings, many of which are heritage-listed. These include the Broken Hill Court House, Trades Hall, and the Palace Hotel, famous for its murals and as a filming location for the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”

Known for its abundant wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, McDermotts Coaches is taking a tour group to Kangaroo Island of the South Australian coast on July 1, 2024.

We will spend 3 nights on Kangaroo Island exploring all the different areas, local culture and cuisine.

We will visit Admirals Arch formed over thousands of years, powerful forces of wind and waves from the Southern Ocean have eroded the limestone cliffs along the coastline. The constant exposure to the elements, including salt spray, wind, and rain, has weathered the softer rock, gradually wearing it away.

Initially, the erosive forces created sea caves within the cliffs. These caves continued to be carved out and expanded by the relentless action of the ocean.

Eventually, sections of the cave roof collapsed due to the weakening of the rock, leaving a natural arch formation. This collapse process continues, slowly altering the shape of the arch over time.

If you want to join us on our tour to Kangaroo Island, we still have limited seats available! If you would like further information on the amazing places we will visit while we are there, or would like a detailed itinerary for this tour, please contact our Legana office via phone or email. Join us this August when we visit New Norcia, the only monastic town in Australia.

Founded by Spanish Benedictine monks in 1847 and has been a centre of monastic life ever since.
The town is home to the New Norcia Benedictine Monastery, which continues to be active. The monastery buildings are some of the finest examples of Spanish architecture in Australia.

New Norcia is also home to a major ground station for the European Space Agency (ESA). The New Norcia Deep Space Station supports space missions and plays a key role in tracking and communication with spacecraft voyaging across the solar system

We visit the township of Victor Harbor on our trip to Kangaroo Island this July, 2024. Famous for its stunning beaches, including the main Victor Harbor Beach, with its gentle surf and sandy shores. Nearby, you'll find Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot and Middleton Beach, both known for their beautiful scenery and good surfing conditions.

The coastline features dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops, providing striking views over the Southern Ocean. The rugged terrain creates a picturesque setting, particularly around The Bluff (Rosetta Head), a prominent granite headland offering panoramic views.

Granite Island, just off the coast and accessible via a causeway, is known for its unique granite boulders and formations. The island's landscape includes walking trails that offer stunning views of the ocean and surrounding areas.

I was first captivated by this amazing place when I travelled there many years ago and the allure has not lessened in all these years. Meet Mungo National Park, part of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area, recognized for its outstanding cultural and natural values. This designation underscores its global significance in terms of both human history and geological features.

The park is renowned for its archaeological significance, particularly the discovery of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady, the oldest known human remains in Australia. Mungo Man's remains are about 42,000 years old, providing crucial insights into early human life and migration.

One of the park's most striking features is the Walls of China, a series of dramatic sand and clay formations sculpted by wind and erosion over millennia. These lunettes provide a visually stunning and geologically fascinating landscape that is also rich in fossils and artifacts.

Visiting there, we will also learn the National Park is a significant site for palaeontologists due to the discovery of megafauna fossils. These include remains of giant kangaroos, wombats, and other large animals that roamed the area during the Pleistocene epoch.

Want to join our tour to Broken Hill from Adelaide and see Mungo NP for yourself? Call or email the McDermotts Legana office to speak with our friendly customer service team. This tour departs Launceston July 6th, 2024

Our final day on King island started with a visit to the historical museum where we learned about the tragic seafarers history that is part of king island legacy. A visit to Peter Gillets Farm for a yarn on island life is always fascinating and Peter tells us a great story. Then it’s off to the cultural centre and the famous restaurant with no food
