These big friendly fellas control the sea urchin population through predation and prevent the decimation of kelp forests! 🪸

Our last Creature Feature of the months goes to another often overlooked species: Southern hulafish (Trachinops taeniatus). 🐠 We can't guarantee any specific species encounter but we can pretty much guarantee you'll see these little guys! 👌They tend to school in large groups, and their yellow and red stripes make them quite easy to identify! 🔎 It is said they are named after their distinctive swimming motion which is said to resemble the movements of a hula dancer's skirt! 🥥

I think this little guy doesn't like Mondays either 🥲 Any guesses as to what species this is? 🤔 I will give you some tips: They are a type of carpet shark, they are ambush predators, and they give birth to live-young! 🦈 If you guessed wobbegong shark you would be correct! 👍 There is a lot of research currently focussed on these species, and I must admit, I think they might be some of my favourite sharks! 🩵 Let us know what your favourite shark is in the comments!

Today's Creature Feature: Eastern Fiddler ray (Trygonorrhina fasciata)! 🐟 I just love this picture one of our tour guides took while on tour! 🩵 These rays are a great visual of just how closely related sharks and rays are, with its ray-like body and shark-like tail! 🦈 Next time you are going for a swim keep your eyes open for these mighty scavengers with such a beautifully unique blue pattern! 👀

Personal space really is not their strong suit 😬 But how could you not love these big blue gentle giants? 🩵 Blue Gropers are perhaps the most emblematic fish in the bay (might be starting a controversy here 🫣), but considering they are the official NSW state fish, I think my opinions are safe! 👌 Please remember to be respectful and try to give wildlife lots of room to move around, and to resist temptations to touch them! 🐠 Should we do a Blue Groper creature feature next? 🤔

Creature Feature for today: Old Wives (Enoplosus armatus) 🐠 Sometimes these guys can be overlooked in the bay, but they are really cool fish! 😎 They are the only species in the Enoplosidae family and despite their small size they have mighty venomous spikes to deter predators. 😡 Not to worry however, when it comes to humans they are very chill little dudes! 🤙 Book your snorkel tour with us to find out more about the creatures of the bay!
