It's one of our favourite birds 🐦

Say hello to our blue jewel of the forest - the splendid fairy-wren! 💠😍

Spotting one of these little electric blue gems makes you feel like a million dollars, just like Sharyn did while on holiday from NSW.

"I wanted to capture images of the fairy-wrens, so I searched the internet for the best places to see them and The Berry Farm at Rosa Glen, just outside Margaret River, came up."

"We took the drive out and I was able to see them along with many other birds, and we had a great lunch too!"

The Margaret River Region offers some of the best birdwatching in Australia, and The Berry Farm Cellar Door & Cottage Café is a favourite of locals, visitors, and fairy-wrens alike. Also known for their homemade jams, preserves, sauces, syrups, and other gourmet creations, this charming spot is a must-visit. Take a seat in their beautiful café gardens, and you'll likely have these beautiful birds vying for a piece of your scone too... 🧁

A ten-minute drive from Margaret River town, Eagles Heritage is one of Australia's largest sanctuaries for birds of prey dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned and displaced raptors.

Alby is one of the educational birds you can meet during the sanctuary's twice-daily bird of prey encounters, where you can witness birds of prey in free flight and get a photo cheek to beak with Alby or one of the other resident owls 🦅

Eagles Heritage is open Thursdays to Mondays, 10am-4pm.

A new homegrown event has been confirmed to showcase the best of our South West food and wine! 🍽️🍷

Pair’d will take place from 14-17 November this year, with the aim of becoming an annual staple on the calendar – featuring a series of premium events in iconic Margaret River destinations and wineries, as well as collaborations with some of the region’s world-renowned chefs, winemakers and sommeliers.

This event will create vibrancy in the South West and generate flow-on benefits to the local community from the increased visitor spend, which will boost a broad range of local businesses- from farms to wineries.

Our wine industry thrives off local visitation and cellar door sales and Pair'd is a fantastic new opportunity for us to further elevate the profile of the Margaret River wine region and the entire South West, by inviting travellers from out-of-state and out-of-region to indulge in the best the area has to offer.

And with regular flights from Melbourne and Sydney connecting seamlessly to the east coast, it’s never been easier for travellers to visit the South West ✈️

The Margaret River Pro has long been a staple in Western Australia’s calendar of major events, and as this year’s event has kicked off, we’re very proud to be locking in our support for another four years until 2028.

The surf competition is a proven visitor drawcard for the area, with the 2023 event attracting more than 3,500 visitors to the Margaret River region, injecting more than $8 million into the South West economy.

We look forward to continuing to welcome surfers, staff and fans from across the globe to Main Break this year and for many more years to come.

We have now entered the cooler weather season known as Djeran.
A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that bring a dewy presence in the early mornings. Don't forget to pack something warm when you are heading south.

Welcome to Djeran! It’s one of six seasons in the Noongar calendar of the South-West, generally spanning April-May, and means an end to the really hot weather 🌞🌞

A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that once again bring a dewy presence for us to discover in the early mornings 💧

The winds have also changed, especially in their intensity, with light breezes generally swinging from the south-east to south-west. This is the Noongar season also known as the ‘ant season’, or ‘the season of adulthood’. Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds 🐞

Djeran is a time of red flowers, including the red flowering gum (Corymbia ficifolia) on the south coast, the smaller and more petite flowers of the summer flame (Beaufortia aestiva) in the north of Noongar Country and native cranberry in the jarrah forest 🍒

You may also notice the red ‘rust’ and seed cones forming on the male and female sheoaks (Allocasuarina fraseriana), called condil. Banksias start to display their flowers too 🌾

Traditionally, foods at this time of year included the seeds (bayu) that had been collected and stored for treatment from the djiriji (zamia palm) last season, along with the root bulbs of the yanget (rush), bardi grubs, fresh water fish, kooyar (frogs), yakaarn (turtles) and quenda (southern brown bandicoot) 🐾

As the season progresses the nights will become cooler and damper, along with some cool and rainy days. Traditionally mia-mias (houses or shelters) were now repaired with materials from plants like bibool (paperbark), mindarie (balga fronds), koorla (native wisteria or Hardenbergia comptoniana) and wollung (running postman or Kennedia prostrata) to make sure they were waterproofed, reinforced and facing in the right direction in readiness for the cold and wet period to come ⛈

Sydney friends can now fly direct to Busselton in the Margaret River region!

Tourism WA is proud to support Jetstar Australia's newly launched inaugural direct flight between Sydney and Busselton, marking a pivotal moment for Australia’s South West tourism industry.

Operating three times weekly, the new flight will significantly reduce travel time for East Coast visitors to reach the Margaret River Region, as a five-hour non-stop service.

With 95 per cent of visitors to Western Australia arriving by air, WA’s visitor economy relies heavily on-air travel, especially in the regions.
