#8 in our Educational Series, with Karen Baildon:
What's the difference between drowning prevention lessons and conventional learn to swim?

Well, one word - SURVIVAL.

Throughout the years, I've met many, many parents that have spent many years and lots and lots of money on swimming lessons. And their children have still got very basic drowning prevention skills. That should not be the case. If first and foremost, formal swim lessons emphasised drowning prevention skills and self rescue skills that can help a beginners swimmer save themselves independently in the water.

Your instructor needs to be teaching your child with a sense of urgency. They are teaching a life saving skill. Conventional learn to swim lessons, teach limited, independent self saving skills, and quite often drag on for years and years with no real results. Your child needs to be mastering self saving survival skills as quickly as possible.

It’s Swim Safer Week!
Don’t forget your clothes & shoes for lessons this week!
All Babies & Toddlers (Dippas) and beginner swimmers (Flippas) need to bring clothes (& Nappies, if needed) to classes this week!

Why? Beginner swimmers need to feel comfortable with the weight of clothes while swimming in water. ✔️Self Saving drills - save lives
✔️Learning how to back float & BREATH-saves lives
✔️Learning to INDEPENDENT roll from front to back - saves lives

Most drowning incidents happen in non-swimming times, when children are fully clothed.
✔️Learning how to swim in clothes-saves lives.

❤️Let’s make some safer swimmers this week! ❤️

Today we are sharing our new report, which reinforces the key steps for keeping children safe in and around the water.

The 10-year national study on child drowning deaths in Australia reinforces the importance of active supervision and creating barriers to prevent young children from accessing water.

The report paints a stark picture of the factors that led to a fatal child drowning:
🔹 83% of the children were not being directly supervised by an adult
🔹 91% occurred in a residential backyard pool
🔹 38% of the swimming pool fences were faulty, not maintained or not compliant
🔹 33% involved a child accessing the pool through a propped open gate

Our Keep Watch campaign urges all parents and carers to follow these four actions to keep children safe around water:
Supervise, Restrict, Teach, Respond.

is deeply concerned that over 40% of children are not meeting the National Benchmarks for swimming and water safety by the time they leave primary school is deeply concerned that over 40% of children are not meeting the National Benchmarks for swimming and water safety by the time they leave primary school.

Many children are missing out on lessons, receiving too few lessons, or dropping out of swim programs altogether.

The 2024 Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report revealed that the risk of drowning increases tenfold between the ages of 10 to 20. This is due to a clear decline in swimming, water safety, and lifesaving skills, combined with an increase in risk-taking activities.

Many young adults are left unprepared for the dangers they may encounter in and around the water as they grow older. Without immediate action to address this skills gap, more lives could be at risk.

Parents and carers play a critical role in their children's swimming and water safety education. We strongly recommend that children are enrolled in swimming lessons, or a program such as Swim and Survive, that adheres to the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework and assesses progress against the National Benchmarks.

Can your 6-year-old get to safety after accidently falling into water?

Building strong foundations in water safety is essential for kids. By the age of 6, they should be mastering the basic skills and understand rules for safe behaviour.

The National Benchmarks set a guide for what every child should aim to achieve - By 6 years old, every child should be able to:
✅ Enter and exit shallow water safely
✅ Float for at least 30 seconds
✅ Glide through the water for 3 metres
✅ Be familiar with water rules and safe behaviours

Learning these essential skills early on can save lives and create a lifelong love for swimming!

Visit linktr.ee/royallifesaving to learn more about the National Benchmark for the age of 6 years.

Part seven of our educational series with Andrew Baildon OLY

Milestones: how do you know that your child will have strong swimming skills for the rest of their life?

To begin, all children need to have strong water safety skills ideally before preschool.

By the time your child starts year one, they should be able to back float independently, swim and roll into a face-up float, and tread water for over one minute independently.

They should also be able to swim so confidently for 25 meters.

By the time your child is 10 to be considered a strong swimmer, they should have these skills.

A combination of independent treading water and back floating confidently for over a minute and they should be able to swim a strong 200 meter freestyle.

If your child can’t hit these milestones at Superfish, we don’t consider them to be strong swimmers. For more information, talk to our team:
