This day in history-VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August. This date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over.

The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day. In August 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as VP Day and most newspapers reported it as such.To read more about VP Day and Australian involvement in the Japanese surrender.

This Day in History - 13th August 2022

What a wonderful evening it was at the East Malvern RSL 80th Anniversary of Kokoda dinner 2 years ago. The room was filled with veterans, historians, and passionate supporters of the Kokoda legacy, all united in honouring the sacrifices and heroic actions of those who fought along the Kokoda Track.

Kokoda Historical was proud to have played a role in organising this special event, working closely with the RSL to bring together an unforgettable evening of reflection and inspiration. The highlight was undoubtedly the keynote address delivered by Dr. Brendan Nelson , the renowned Director of the Australian War Memorial. His stirring words captured the essence of the Kokoda campaign, reminding us of the resilience, courage, and mateship that defined the Diggers who fought there.

Dr. Nelson's intimate knowledge of Australia's military history provided deep insights into the significance of Kokoda, not just as a vital battle, but as a defining moment in the nation's identity. His ability to bring the past to life, weaving personal stories and historical accounts, left the audience captivated and profoundly moved.

The Kokoda Historical exhibition, which we were honored to curate for the event, provided a visual and emotional connection to the campaign, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the stories and artifacts of this pivotal moment in history. The artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays brought the Kokoda experience to life, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by our forebears.

In the end, the 80th Anniversary of Kokoda dinner was a resounding success, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Kokoda campaign and the unwavering commitment of organisations like the 2/14th Battalion 2nd AIF , 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association , 2/16th Battalion - AIF Association to preserving and sharing these important stories. As we look to the future, we are inspired to continue our efforts in educating and engaging the public, ensuring that the lessons of Kokoda are never forgotten.

This day in Kokoda History- 10-11 August 1942

Sergeant William (Bill) Guest, from 'A' Company of the 39th Infantry Battalion, shared his experiences as they retreated to Deniki from Kokoda.

About 6:15pm rain began to fall. Captain Symington called me across to his dugout under the Assistant District Magistrate's house and said; 'Your platoon will follow Company Headquarters out and bring in the wounded.' The most seriously wounded in the dugout were Privates John Stormont, who was breathing through a large hole in the back, and Les Skinner who had one of his thigs almost torn away by a gr***de or a machine gun burst...

At first light I sent a message to both ends of the line to find out how many of us there were. I soon found out there were 21 of s, We got moving immediately and after about half and hour of creeping in the thick scrub we realised we were moving back towards the plateau (Kokoda). Then Bluey Murray said; "I think I can get us to the airstrip.' I told him to go ahead and after what seemed like hours we suddenly emerged from the jungle right at the end of the strip.

This day in history: The Second Battle of Kokoda, 8-10 August 1942.

Cameron's unit, advancing on the main track, unexpectedly encountered a Japanese battalion headed in the opposite direction. Coincidentally, the Japanese battalion, led by Colonel Tsukamoto, had initiated an assault on Deniki—aware of the Australian presence there—on the same day that Cameron began his advance.

Colonel Tsukamoto commanded 522 soldiers from the 1/144 Battalion. With the inclusion of Japanese combat engineers who clashed with Bidstrup's company, as well as minor signal and medical units, and an artillery section equipped with a single mountain gun, the total Japanese force engaging the 430 Australians amounted to approximately 660 troops.

This day in history- 5 August 1944

In the early hours of August 5, 1944, 1,104 Japanese prisoners of war at No. 12 Prisoner of War Camp in Cowra staged a riot in an attempt to escape en masse.

During the assault on the camp's boundaries, three Australian guards and approximately 200 Japanese prisoners were killed as they charged into intense machine-gun and rifle fire.

Subsequently, more casualties occurred. Over 300 prisoners managed to escape into the nearby countryside.

In the ensuing nine days, as authorities recaptured the escapees, three additional Australian guards lost their lives.

This day in Kokoda History- 4 August 1942.

Major Cameron who is now the acting Commanding Officer of the 39th Battalion has arrived at Deniki and taken charge of all troops. The 39th's Battalion History records the following:

The period of relative calm was marked by two other events of vital importance to the final success of the Owen Stanley campaign.

Firstly, the signalers completed laying 66 miles of telephone line from Moresby to Deniki, thus ending Maroubra Force's isolation. Radio contract had been possible only under favourable conditions, the Army 101 set was ineffective.

Secondly, and just as important, Bert Kienzle (who the first had grasped the need to use air transport as means of supply) found terrain suitable for air-droppings-two dry lakes right on top of the main range of the Owen Stanleys, and about four air miles east of Kagi. Kienzle called the area Myola (an Australian Aboriginal word meaning 'dawn of day') after the wife of his friend and Commanding Officer, Major Elliot-Smith.

30 July 2024 - Day 2 39OSB Kokoda Trek Update

The 39OSB trekking group has begun the second day of their Kokoda Track adventure, setting out from the iconic Kokoda Archway.

After an early start and a hearty breakfast, the group gathered at the Kokoda Archway, the symbolic gateway to the legendary trail. Standing beneath the grand monument, the trekkers took a moment to reflect on the historical significance of this site and the challenges that lay ahead.

With spirits high and backpacks secured, the group set off, following in the footsteps of the brave soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives along this very path during the Kokoda Campaign of World War II. The trek through the lush, verdant landscape is both physically demanding and visually stunning. The group will traverse steep inclines, navigate winding trails, and marvel at the stunning vistas that unfold before them.

This day in history-30 July

On 30 July, 1943, Leslie 'Bull' Allen was alongside United States soldiers on Mt Tambu as part of the Wau-Salumua campaign. In the course of the battle, Allen went forward and carried to safety no less than twelve American servicemen. Each time he went back for another rescue attempt, soldiers would make bets on whether he would return.

In this iconic photograph, the American soldier carried on Bull Allen's shoulders was unconscious, having been knocked out earlier by a mortar bomb. During the engagement, two other medics had lost their lives attempting to rescue the wounded. Despite being slightly injured himself, Bull Allen displayed remarkable courage; his unwavering determination and commitment to his duty enabled him to accomplish the aforementioned act of bravery.

For his heroism at Mount Tambu, he would later receive his second gallantry award, the United States Silver Star.

On this webpage you can also watch a short film that tells the little-known story of Leslie ‘Bull’ Allen, brought up in hardship in Ballarat in regional Victoria, to become a courageous, complex war hero. Wind & Sky Productions' micro-documentary tells the story behind the famous photograph of Allen carrying a wounded soldier over his back during the battle of Mt Tambu, New Guinea, in 1943.

Day 1 of 39OSB Kokoda Track Tour

The 39OSB trekking group has safely arrived in Kokoda Village. Earlier today, the group visited the Kokoda Memorial, which stands as a solemn tribute to the brave soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives during the Kokoda Campaign of World War II. Standing at the memorial, the group took a moment to reflect on the hardships and heroism of those who defended this vital piece of ground against the Japanese advance. It was a humbling experience that brought the history of this place to life.

The group then proceeded to the Herbert Kienzle Museum at Kokoda, which offers a comprehensive overview of the Kokoda Campaign. The group learned about the harsh conditions the soldiers endured, the importance of the campaign in the broader Pacific theater, and the lasting legacy of the Kokoda Track.

Today, they set up camp at Kokoda and had some time to explore the village and interact with the local community. The groups spirits are high as they anticipate the exciting challenge ahead.

We will post daily updates following the group so please Share and Like our page so you don't miss out.

Colonel Yokoyama Yosuke, commander of 15 Independent Engineer Regiment, led the 'Yokoyama advanced force' ashore unopposed at Basabua in the late afternoon of 21 July 1942. Before dawn the following morning all troops, equipment and supplies disembarked and the ships had sailed, so as to be clear of the coast when Allied aircraft arrived looking for them.

On the night of 11 April 1945, eight men were dropped off near Muschu Island with four Hoehn military folboats (collapsible canoes) by HMAS HDML 1321 patrol boat.

The eight commandos were Special Lieutenant Alan Robert Gubbay, Lieutenant Thomas Joseph Barnes, Sergeant Malcolm Francis Max Weber, Lance Corporal Spencer Henry Walklate, Signaller Michael Scott Hagger, Signaller John Richard Chandler, Private Ronald Edward Eagleton, Sapper Edgar Thomas 'Mick' Dennis.

Their was to paddle ashore and reconnoitre the island to determine the status of Japanese defences and validate reports that two 140 mm long-range naval guns were still in position.

Intelligence suggested that these weapons were back in service and could prove dangerous during the forthcoming invasion of Wewak, as they had sufficient range to fire into the proposed landing areas and, while they would not stop the Australian invasion, they could cause significant casualties.

Of the eight commandos who took part in the raid, only one would survive.

Yesterday we visited the island of Muschu. Stay tuned for exciting new treks and tours to PNG.
