After a couple days delayed start 🤬 we finally got away Wednesday afternoon to start our 5 week trip to Central Australia 🎉 we hot footed it up to Sea Lake the first afternoon and free camped the night behind the Royal Hotel where we enjoyed a delicious dinner & a few drinks - highly recommend a stop here 😊. Next morning we headed off again, we were planning to stop at Lake Tyrell but the weather gods were not on our side 😭 so the first stop was a bit further up in the tiny town of Walpeup to check out a painted silo we hadn’t seen previously. It was beautifully done with great detail that the pics done do it the justice it deserves. We continued on and silly Debra made a rookie mistake and completely forgot about the border crossing 🤦‍♀️ so it was bye bye bananas, mandarins and tomatoes that I had just brought 🤣🙄 we crossed into SA and continued on to the riverside town of Berri (home of the Berri Estates). We set up camp for the next 2 nights at Martin’s Bend reserve right on the edge of the Murray River, it has a beautiful view of the river straight across from your campsite with loads of birdlife and lots of serenity. I can imagine in summer it would be chockablock and priced at only $5 per night you cannot complain!
The next day we had a look at the surrounding townships of Renmark (Paddle-steamers), Paringa (historical sites and more silos), Barmara (Lake Bonney) and Kingston on Murray (Banrock Station winery). We arrived back to our campsite to discover they’re had been a huge downpour while we were out and that we were now marooned on our own private island 🏝️ lol and to think people pay big $$ for that privilege 🤣🤣 ahhh the joys of winter travels 🥶❄️⛈️☔️

📍BARN HILL STATION
Next stop was Barn Hill Station stay. This place had it all, nightly entertainment, beautiful beaches that you could swim at, rock pools, red cliffs, bush style campground, bowling green, super friendly atmosphere and the best pizzas going round 🍕 I would definitely have to vote Barn Hill as one of my favorite places we have visited so far on our trip, we could of easily stayed here at least a couple of weeks! There is always something to do here, swimming in the gorgeous beach or exploring in the rock pools, taking a walk up to this magnificent rock formations called the lost city, fish off the beach or take one of the trails around to explore the magnificent red cliffs especially at sunset when the colours are just stunning. Back at Station HQ there is a great cafe serving all manner of tasty treats plus there is nightly homemade meals or sensational pizzas to order (which got a 10/10 from me). There is always something on from 5pm (happy hour) so you can wander up and join in the festivities if your so inclined or just enjoy them from afar while socializing with fellow campers. There is also a full size bowling green where they hold fun mini tournaments a couple times a week for prizes. Definitely one of the best set ups we have encountered on our trip. We were lucky enough to have Roger & Michelle hanging out here with us and also met some great new friends Deb & Steve from Tassie. Rob also ran into a girl he went to tech school with nearly 40 years ago, what are the odds 🤣 If you get the chance to stop here at Barn Hill Station stay, do it, we 💯 recommend it ❤️

📍80 MILE BEACH
Next stop was the famous 80 mile beach. We were really looking forward to this place as we had heard so many great things and to be completely honest we were left a little disappointed. Yes it was a bit of an oasis after a very long (boring) drive to get here, the beach to look at was absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately that’s about where it stopped. We had heard there was great fishing here but they failed to mention only for 1 hour a day as the rest of the time the tide was over a kilometer out to sea. You couldn’t swim because of sea snakes and alleged croc sighting a year ago so there was buggar all else to do 😂 or even look at close by. The caravan park itself was nice enough, they do need to lift their game on provided entertainment (only have something on 2 nights per week) but we were lucky enough to have a singer one of the nights we were there. The definite highlight was the delicious icecream cones they sold in the shop🍦ohh and having our friends Michelle & Roger catch up to us again which filled in some time. Would I stop here again? Yes but only for an overnighter or maybe 2 nights max (4 nights was way too long) as it does break up the long drives between towns nicely, if I was pushed for time then nah I’d probably give it a miss.

📍PARDOO ROADHOUSE
Next stop was to have a look at Pardoo Roadhouse which was directly hit by category 5 tropical cyclone Ilsa in April this year. The roadhouse was in direct line and was completely wiped out. A GoFundMe was set up which quickly raised around $30,000 in a few days to help them get back open again but unfortunately the damage bill amounted to over 5 million so all donations were returned and the owners are still battling insurance. As it’s was the only fuel stop for several hundred kilometers between roadhouses, people are still getting caught out unaware that it’s completely closed, most think there is still fuel available. Luckily we were aware and carried extra with us. Not so much some people who were offering top $ to anyone who would sell them some (next roadhouse 140km).

📍PORT HEDLAND
Next stop was the industrial township of Port Hedland. From the outset it looks like an industrial wasteland full of trucks, ships, trains and red dust everywhere but delve a little deeper and you’ll find a rather interesting place. The port of Port Hedland is the worlds largest bulk export port. It’s main commodities are iron ore (96%), salt (0.5%) and fuel (0.3%). It runs 24hrs non stop and there is a barrage of trucks and trains constantly moving things back and forth. Container ships are loaded over a 20hr period then expertly piloted out to sea on the high tide, with another one coming in to take its place. Everything is covered in red dust and I wondered why a town that is so cashed up and rich in industry why the houses were so run down almost looking abandoned around the main township/port area only to discover that there is a 12 month limit on living in Port Hedland due to the health risks from the iron ore dust, so nobody’s wasting their money on renovations in this area! The majority now live in newer estates in South Hedland or on the other side of Port Hedland away from this main port traffic area. It’s not all doom and gloom there though, there is a really lovely foreshore to stroll along and watch turtles frolicking about, some really great and quirky cafes and we enjoyed a meal at the newly renovated Hedland Hotel where we were lucky enough to catch up with some friends Mike & Alisha for a meal & drinks watching the sunset from the new deck. We also went out to check out Pretty pool a popular swimming spot and had a chuckle at the clothing optional beach sign, unfortunately for Rob it was too cool for white pointers to be out that day 😉. As usual we did a bit of fishing and had some great chats with other travelers on the jetty at night getting some tips on where to stay and what to see on our travels up the coast. All in all I would definitely recommend a stop a night or two in Port Hedland, it has an interesting history and is a hive of activity, it’s loud and it’s dusty but somehow all that adds to the charm of the place 🚂 🧂

📍ROBE RIVER, WHIM CREEK, KARRATHA/DAMPIER
Our next few stops were at free camps as we made our way towards Port Hedland at Robe river, Whim Creek as well as a quick stop in Karratha for supplies (and some KFC for lunch mmmm nuggets I miss you 😂) and a drive out to Dampier to see Red Dog just for our neighbors at home (you know who you are DC 😂). There is one thing WA does very well and that’s really fantastic 24hr free camps right along the coast with good toilets (mostly) and dump points in great locations, definitely makes travelling the long distances between towns a breeze.

📍ONSLOW
Next stop was the small fishing village of Onslow. We stopped in here to fill in a few days as it was School Holidays in WA and everywhere was booked solid but we managed to get into the overflow park. Onslow historically was known for pearling, farming and gold mining but its current day industry is 🧂 salt and Onslow Salt produces 2.5 million tonnes of salt every year. We were lucky enough to be there at the right time for staircase to the moon, which is a fantastic phenomenon to see a moon rise, but it’s so hard to get a great picture to reflect how amazing it looked (but I tried 😂) we spent our days just relaxing, checking out the town, jetty and the beaches, also the Ashbuton river, investigated a few off-road tracks in the area and went out to the old township plus throw in a bit of fishing it was a good few days in a tiny town we probably would of skipped otherwise 😊

📍EXMOUTH
Next stop on our WA road trip was Exmouth, Cape Range National Park and world heritage listed Ningaloo Reef 🪸🐠 The town of Exmouth is a relatively new town only being formed in 1967 as a consequence of the US Navy setting up a base in the Exmouth Gulf nicknamed Potshot. Exmouth town was then constructed to support the station and house US Navy personnel's families. It would become a slice of America in the Pilbara, populated with aspects of American culture everywhere: green dollar bills, bowling alleys, baseball fields, and right-handed Cadillacs cruising down the handful of left-side traffic streets. Exmouth children celebrated both Independence Day and Australia Day, played baseball and had both flags flying at school. The base was turned over to Australia in 1992, renamed Harold Holt and is used as a submarine communications station with the huge high voltage signal towers being seen for miles. Around the tip from Exmouth is the Cape Range National Park and the world heritage Ningaloo Reef. Ningaloo is one of the worlds largest fringing reefs home to over 750 species of fish including whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, and dugongs. There are loads of spots where you can swim out to the reef from shore making it super accessible We decided to take a glass bottom/snorkeling boat tour and we got to see some of the most incredible coral we have ever seen (dare I say it better than the Great Barrier Reef) and although it was a bit scary out in deep open sea we just couldn’t not get in for a snorkle 😬 I did take a bit of convincing I must admit but I put on my big girl pants and did it 😂 and I didn’t get eaten by a shark 🦈 so that was a bonus lol. Next time we come up this way we would definitely stay in the campgrounds on the West side for better reef accessibility rather than in Exmouth town itself. We also visited the Vlahming Head lighthouse for the most spectacular views, stunning sunsets and of course whale watching. We really enjoyed our 4 days here and will definitely be back.

📍BULLARA STATION
Next stop was Bullara Station Stationstay which is a working cattle station. It is situated within the Exmouth Gulf and sits in a quarter of a million acres 😱. In its past life it was a sheep station but due to wild dogs and foxes, the switch was made to droughtmaster cattle. There was lots of animals to interact with that roam freely around the station, great walking trails, incredible uninterrupted night skies plus lots of entertainment provided during the week with doing his thing around the campfire as well as pizza nights and musical acts. Bullara beef is very sort after (there’s a huge line up at 3pm when it goes on sale to get hold of some) as well as their famous homemade scones with jam & cream (of course I had to partake twice to confirm that they are indeed delicious 🤤). There is also a dining restaurant as well as a cafe serving yummy treats, all in all we highly rate this place, we had a great time there, definitely recommend getting along there if your in the area 😁

📍CARNARVON
Next stop was the infamous town of Carnarvon. We had read on several Facebook travelers groups lots of people saying dont stop there, stay elsewhere, lots of trouble, heard from a mate of a mate etc etc but upon chatting to actual real travelers that we met that had just stayed there all saying it was completely fine we decided to take a chance and we’re really glad we did. Carnarvon has an interesting history, being an integral part of NASA space missions Gemini & Apollo with communication station being built in Carnarvon which was the last place on earth the astronauts communicated with before leaving earths orbit on their missions to space. It’s also known as the fruit bowl of WA producing 80% of WAs total fruit and vege crops which you can purchase farm direct on the “fruit loop” road trail. We were also very surprised to learn Carnarvon is also famous for its bananas (being a sub tropical location) and were surprised to see huge banana plantations around. The Carnarvon banana is smaller and sweeter and takes 15 months to grow opposed to 9 months on the tropical east coast.
While there we also visited Point Quobba to check out the blow holes (and campground) as well as “the aquarium” snorkeling spot. We also enjoyed as the spectacular drive through Quobba station up to Red Bluff. Overall we enjoyed our 3 nights there and lesson learnt, don’t believe everything you read on FB 😂

📍WOORAMEL STATION RIVER RETREAT
Next stop was 2 nights at Wooramel Station which is a family owned working cattle, sheep, goat and outback station stay. The property occupies an area of 1430 square kilometres with 60 kilometres of coastline frontage to the Indian Ocean, backing onto the Shark Bay World Heritage area.
The Wooramel River is an upside down river (runs underground) running on the surface only 2-3 times a year for a couple of weeks at a time, and only after good inland rains. In the 1920’s drilling commenced for artesian bores. The artesian (via natural) pressure sends water 240 m to the surface. It maintains a constant temperature of approximately 33 degrees with a high mineral content (iron, salt and magnesium) which has wonderful soothing effects on tired muscles.
There are some interesting walks around the property, one going through an old tip area which the junk yard dog (aka Rob) was in his element 😂
Entertainment & drinks around the campfire area is on most nights and we were treated to some fabulous bush poetry by visiting poet Bill Gordon the first night and some old fashioned sing along tunes by the camp host on the second night as well as some delicious pies on Friday night pie night. It was a bit of a shame to leave after 2 nights we could of easily stayed a couple more. We highly recommend a visit here if you passing by.

📍MONKEY MIA & DENHAM
Next stop was the world famous Monkey Mia via Denham. We have a few mixed feelings about this place, overall we did love our stay, the resort was amazing, the bars & restaurants were great, awesome pool, mini golf etc, lots of activities to do if you have kids, the camp kitchens were the best we have ever seen, like full commercial kitchens, great beaches, fishing etc there are emus wandering around everywhere and of course the main attraction, the dolphins were beautiful BUT the rampant price gouging was just terrible. You do expect a bit of a margin on prices at a resort but this was resort +++ prices for everything from the powered campsites to the drinks at the bar to the ice creams from the shop but the WORST was the absolute rorting taking place every time you drove out of the gate and back in you had to pay ANOTHER $15 per person to enter REGARDLESS if your staying there at the resort or not! So the hot tip from us, do not go sightseeing outside of the resort just stay inside the gates or better yet stay in Denham (25k away) not at the resort itself and only go there for a day trip to see the dolphins. If we ever come back around this way again that’s what we would do now that we know!! Consider that a public service announcement 😂 Anyway rant over lol.
The seaside town of Denham was really pretty as was little lagoon and Francois Peron National Park. We enjoyed beautiful weather, warm days but cool nights and also enjoyed a sunset cruise on the Aristocrat on our last night at Monkey Mia and had a great show of dolphins jumping in and out of the water chasing their dinner, it was really cool to see.

📍KALBARRI
Next stop on our journey was the huge surprise packet of Kalbarri. We were not expecting very much, we knew there was a pretty cool skywalk to see but boy were we completely surprised by how much more was there to enjoy. Blessed with year round great weather, unique river, coastal and inland gorges, stunning landscapes Kalbarri is uniquely placed between two distinctly different landscapes, spectacular cliffs to the south and inland river gorges in Kalbarri National park to the east with rock formations as old as 400 million years. We enjoyed several walks/hikes/scenic lookouts and trails around the region over 3 days and have put Kalbarri on the list to return to and explore further. The whole place is truly breathtaking.

📍GERALDTON
Next stop was a few nights at Cape Burney approximately 10mins out of Geraldton. Once again there were beautiful beaches to admire & do a spot of fishing (we are yet to find a crap beach in WA 😂) at Cape Burney and a surprisingly large and quite beautiful town of Geraldton. They’ve made lots of improvements in town along the foreshore and it’s a great place to wander along or to sit and watch the sunset. We drove up to the lookout where there was also a magnificent memorial to HMAS SYDNEY II which incidentally also offered up great sunset views.

📍SANDY CAPE CAMPGROUND - WA
We spent 3 nights relaxing at Sandy Bay campground which is a highly sort after (and unbookable) campsite during summer and we could see why, it’s location right on a spectacular bay, perfect for swimming and snorkeling, big sand dunes for sliding down plus walk over the sand dunes and you have a surf beach on the other side. Add to that only a 10 minute drive to the great seaside town of Jurien Bay for any supplies you may need I can see why this is a Perth locals favorite location. Being cooler, we had no problem getting a site but it was still reasonably busy, probably half full, so it’s still pretty popular in winter as well. Definitely would stay again if we were around this way, would love to have a swim & snorkle 🤿☀️

📍 THE PINNACLES - NAMBUNG NATIONAL PARK WA

As we started our journey north of Perth and travelled along the Indian Ocean Drive we came across a desert randomly located right beside an ocean 🤯 with acres and acres of limestone pillars called The Pinnacles that in some sections look like a bunch of old headstones in a graveyard. There was the option of doing the 4klm loop drive or the 1.4klm walk. We chose the latter as we had the caravan hitched, we did have the option to unhitch and leave the van in the carpark but chose to walk the loop which took roughly an hour and I think was a better option, you get to walk amongst all the pillars which we’re actually really fascinating. Entry was $15 or free if you have a Western Australia National Park pass (which we do). The Pinnacles only appeared roughly 200 years ago when the vegetation above died off after a long process of leaching away of the underlying limestone and eventually the overlying sand blew away leaving the pinnacles as we see them today. A bizzare place but interesting and definitely worth the stop if your travelling up this way.

📍 ESPERANCE, CAPE LE GRANDE, LUCKY BAY

Next stop was the long awaited visit to Esperance. It has been at least 30+ years since I had last been there and it did not disappoint, the beaches were just as spectacular as I remembered. We spent a week in the region exploring around the township, checking out the lookout, exploring all the beaches on the great ocean beach drive, including West Beach, the famous Twilight Beach, 11 mile lagoon and 13 mile beaches which were all just stunning in their own rights.
We also took a drive out to check out the Pink lake which is no longer pink and to the Esperance Stonehenge which is a complete full size replica of the real deal.
We also visited Cape Le Grande to Wylie Beach and then took the Ranger for a drive on the beach (a huge no no for Rob lol) and sadly a storm rolled in and spoilt my picture perfect Insta moment at the world famous Lucky Bay beach 😂 but it was still beautiful even if overcast lol the kangaroos were still out to greet us in the drizzle on the beach at least 😊 will just have to go back again another time for a swim and some Instaworthy photos 🤪

📍BREMER BAY, RAVENSTHORPE, HOPETOUN

The next part of our journey led us to the quiet fishing village of Bremer Bay Caravan Park for a couple of nights then onto Ravensthorpe free 48 hour camp stopover with a visit to the seaside town of Hopetoun. All of these towns had their own little positives and are well worth going out of the way to visit even just for a overnighter. 🤩

📍ALBANY, TWO PEOPLES BAY NATIONAL PARK, LITTLE BEACH

Next stop was Albany where we checked out the town as well as the amazing National Anzac Centre at the site of the King George sound where Australia’s troops all departed for the war. We also visited the Desert Mounted Corps memorial as well as Apex lookout.
Out of town we ventured to check out Two Peoples Bay National Park and Little Beach which is known as WA’s hidden gem 💎 it was really beautiful.

📍COSY CORNER BEACH CAMP, DENMARK, ELEPHANT ROCKS, GREENS POOL

Next stop was for 7 nights at Cosy Corner beach camp, just outside of Denmark. It was our first foray into free camping at the beach for that length of time and we did it easy, luckily we could collect water in nearby Denmark every few days to top up our water tanks for the shower/toilet etc prior to this trip we had never free camped before so it’s all a big learning curve for us but it’s quickly becoming our preferred style 😂
We spent our days checking out the surrounding areas of Denmark which is a ripper little town with so much going on there it’s a tourist attraction in itself. Close by is the famous Elephant Rocks which are stunning as well as Greens pool which is another beautiful bay with great snorkeling. We also checked out West Cape Howe National park and Shelley beach to watch where the silly people willing throw themselves off the cliff and hand glide down 🤪 highly recommend this region to visit if your ever nearby

📍 WALPOLE

Next we traveled into the heavily treed national parks through the very quaint townships of Nannup and Manjimup with the final destination of Walpole for 3 nights of relaxation by the river for yet more fishing and exploring the surrounding areas. We visited the acclaimed tree top walk which was really cool, the photos do not do justice to the sheer size of these trees, it really is the valley of giants! We also went for a drive out to check out Peaceful Bay. It cooled down for the first time in months, I actually had to put socks on at night to keep warm 😂 it was a nice stop over to just chill out and relax after the previous busy couple of weeks touring the SW corner.

📍BUSSELTON, DUNSBOROUGH, YALLINGUP, MARGARET RIVER, HAMELIN BAY, AUGUSTA

Our next stop on our south west WA trip was the magnificent town of Busselton, we based ourselves at a lovely farm stay in Vasse (10 mins out of Busso) for 10 days to explore that whole corner of the south west which included the towns/regions of Dunsborough, Cape Naturaliste, Yallingup, Margaret River, Hamelin Bay and Augusta. Here we found hands down some of the best beaches we had encountered so far, the clearest and bluest water you’ll ever find anywhere. We often say to each other that you think some Queensland or NSW beaches are the shizz, they just ain’t got nothing on WA.
In Busselton we visited the famous 1.8 kilometer jetty and had a ride on its tourist train to the aquarium out at sea, plus walked it quite a few nights trying to catch some squid 🦑 we did day trips out to Dunsborough to wander the township and visit the sculpture festival, we visited the lighthouse at Cape Naturaliste and stopped in at all the little bays and coves for a dip in the ocean, Bunker Bay being the stand out favorite. We visited Yallingup, the famous Prevally beach as well as Margaret River with all its yummy foodie finds. We day tripped down to Augusta and Hamelin Bay to enjoy the stunning beauty of these areas and of course have a swim and a fish 🎣
All in all this pocket of the south west region has been one of our absolute favorites so far, it has officially been added to the “places we may live in the future” list 😊

Today was a great day exploring all the sights around Katoomba. We started the day with a visit to Scenic World trying out all rides, worlds steepest train, cable car and skyway which was such fun, and amazing views. We then went for a drive over to Lithgow and checked out the town and another lookout which was also amazing.
We returned to Katoomba and waited for it to get dark to go on the Light The Night walk around the cliffs and down to Katoomba cascades and waterfall, this was also amazing, adds a whole new dimension being lit up at night , I highly recommend this if your ever up here in the Blue Mountains, totally worth the calf pain I’m going to have tomorrow from all the steps 😂😂

Day 2 we headed from Albury to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains with a stop to visit the Dog on the Tuckerbox in Gundagai. Tonight after dinner at the pub we are staying at, we went for a night walk to see the 3 sisters lit up which was pretty spectacular, the photos don’t really do it justice 😊
