Score a luxurious Emirates first-class experience for less!

Fifth-freedom flights offer a chance to fly in style at a significantly lower price point. Here are some great routes that I've managed to find in the past week. A great way to eliminate the 'Emirates tax' and fly in first.

Wise Travel Card

I've thoroughly enjoyed using the Wise card throughout my travels in Japan, the user-friendly app and the level of detail provided for each transaction were great Only the first ATM withdrawal was fee-free up to $350, for subsequent withdrawals, I would use my ING card which rebates the first 5 ATM withdrawal fees.

Champagne and Caviar! 🥂🍾

The main difference between first and business is that the food and drinks gets more extravagant with caviar and vintage champagne often offered in First.
Would I pay more? Probably not but worth a try!

A comparison of classic rewards vs. classic plus flights for October 2024 in business class. While the new offering does increase the number of seats available, it definitely comes at a cost and ultimately is based on the cash prices of fares which can fluctuate.

It can be as low as 1.5x for NZ flights (even less if they're on sale) or as high as 10.1x for LA flights which are some of the most popular flights Qantas has to offer.

Points Devaluation

In the past year, over 175 billion points have been earned, up from 94 billion two years earlier. With over 15 million members, the main frequent flyer for those in Australia, could devaluation be on the cards for Qantas?

More recently, other programs such as Cathay's Asia Miles have devalued their points starting from the 1st of October. Amex Membership Rewards has devalued the transfer rate of Singapore Krisflyer and Emirates Skywards from 2:1 to 3:1.

The last time Qantas devalued its points was in 2019, where we saw the cost to redeem premium reward seats up to 15% more.

Could Qantas be next?

Just a heads up that the JR Pass price is going up by ~70% on October 1st, 2023. Announced in April this year, if you're planning on traveling to Japan soon, think about buying your pass before the 1st of Oct to save some $$.

Once you purchase your pass, you have 3 months to "exchange" it in Japan, so you could buy a pass in late September for travel in December.

DYOR to whether a single-trip ticket or even flying may be better for your travel plans.

Looking to earn 4x Woolworths reward points?

1. Everyday Extra - Join for $7/month or $59 a year and you'll get a 10% discount at Woolies and Big W each month as well as 3x points on purchases.

2. Everyday Pay - Link your credit/debit card or gift cards on the rewards app and use Everyday Pay by scanning the QR code on the eftpos machine to pay for your purchases. Be quick, this ends on the 31st of March.

Qantas first class redemptions

Few and far between, first class redemptions are possible with enough flexibility. Some of the routes I've found for travel in the 12 months.

You'll likely enjoy some of the best champagne, caviar, and service in the air. They also represent some of the best ways to maximise the value of points with the Japan Air first class coming in at 12.9 cents per dollar!
