Happy When I'm Hiking

Happy When I'm Hiking We are a 'happy' hiking community that seeks to be inclusive, diverse and fun, promoting a healthy lifestyle in nature. Email us for details.

Happy When I'm Hiking© is a club that offers varying levels of hiking experiences for all fitness levels. Each one could require different skills or abilities with the ultimate goal of having a fun and enjoyable experience. We see this meetup as an opportunity to welcome all walkers and hikers that share a love of the great outdoors. We consider hiking a great way to combine exercise and meet like

-minded people who like a bit of a challenge. The volunteer event hosts exercise utmost duty of care and responsibility towards all hikers. How strenuous and how much you are willing to push yourself on a hike is different for everyone and one of the main reasons we try to mix up the hikes offered. As for the pace, the general rule of thumb is 4-5 kilometers an hour (slower on rough territory). While we may sometimes push the group to pick up the pace, we do like to take in the surroundings as well as enjoy the company of the great people who love a challenge! Recently, we've added "Mindful Hiking" and "Shinrin Yoku" to the groups activities. If you like our approach to hiking, then please join us in the adventure!

The messaging around aging for women can be very toxic, but research shows that the way we look at our own aging predicts how well we age. If you think of it as a time of exploration and exhilaration, science suggests you will be happier, healthier, and live longer. Outdoor adventures can help with that mindset shift. The best way to stop and even reverse bone loss—according to Dr. Robert Wermers, a bone disease specialist with the Mayo Clinic—is to do “aerobic walking where you’re bearing weight.” I.e., rucking.

Four reasons why rucking is the best exercise for women.

“There are a number of studies which have shown time outdoors can reduce your cortisol level – the stress hormone in the body – and boost the serotonin and dopamine level – the feel-good chemicals in the brain,” says Treacy.

“Doing this in conjunction with socialising which involves positive emotions and connection can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to reward, motivation and pleasure. This can lead to increased mood, reduced stress, and a general feeling of wellbeing.”

Your national parks are under attack. Join us for a webinar on Wednesday 18 June to hear more.

Come along and find out how you can help push nature protection to the forefront.

Whether it's lack of leadership, irrational decisions, habitat destruction or broken commitments to new national parks, we need to defend our landscapes and wildlife like never before.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We'll cover:
• Significant cuts to funding and staff.
• An abandoning of commitments to create new national parks in the state’s east.
• Repeated delays of promised legislation for new central west parks.
• Senior representatives echoing anti-conservation sentiments and sharing false information.
• Illegal tracks at Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park reopened despite the damage they’re causing.

And more.

RSVP now to help protect the places that protect nature.

Police are gearing up for a busy snow season and reminding everyone: your safety starts before you leave home.

With more people making single-day trips to the snow, we're seeing too many drivers unprepared for conditions, and that's putting lives a risk.

A zero-tolerance approach will apply to drivers not properly equipped for the conditions.

By law, all vehicles entering alpine resorts during the declared snow season must carry wheel chains - and fit them when instructed.
❌ No chains may result in a $395 fine.
❌ Failing to fit them when required may attract a $988 penalty.

Chains can be the difference between staying on the road or sliding off it.

If you're planning a trip to snow this season, remember to:
❄️Top up your car’s radiator with anti-freeze (and use Alpine Mix if diesel)
❄️Drive cautiously with gradual pressure on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin
❄️Brake gently and avoid unnecessary gear changes
❄️Maintain a safe braking distance from vehicles in front, especially in poor visibility
❄️Let someone know your plans and ETA
❄️Check weather and snow conditions regularly - they can change quickly
❄️If lost – stop, seek shelter, call Triple Zero (000) and wait.

We want people to enjoy the snow and make it home safely. Take responsibility. Be ready. Don’t put lives at risk.
