Meet Johnny Trasti, our Norwegian chef and half-owner of "Trasti & Trine" huskies and restaurant we visit as part of our popular 14-day "Arctic Circle and Auroras" adventure.

One of THE most popular days on the 14-day adventure, our "Taste of Husky Dog Sledding" on day 11 way up at 70º north Alta near the banks of the mighty Alta River.

First-up we have an incredibly interactive dog-sledding experience including learning how to harness and set-up our very own dog-sled teams by champion dog-sledder Trine Lyrek before driving them ourselves. As we split into two groups the other group learns all about this fascinating sport by fireside with warm drink in a cosy cabin.

After both groups have had their big dog sledding adventures we’re invited in for an included light lunch cooked by masterchef Johnny himself. Usually one of his stunning winter soups followed by amazing dessert!🇳🇴🍜🍨🍷

Nothing but the best for our guests on our 14-day "Arctic Circle and Auroras" winter Scandinavian adventure.

Two trips already fully booked for 2025 and half-full already for our newly launched third departure!

Off she goes again! 🇮🇸🌋

Eighth eruption since 2021 and fifth since last December. Watch the live-stream below.

A very different situation to the Eyjafjallajökull (eye-uh fyat-lah yer-kut-lah) explosive eruption of 2010.

This current one situated out on the Reykjanes Peninsula west of Reykjavik and southeast of the main airport is a “simple” fissure/lava eruption spilling currently ~1,000m3 of lava/second. Nearby famous Blue Lagoon evacuated and also the nearby southern village of Grindavik which was evacuated after previous large eruptions and the lava flow reaching the edge of the fishing town.

Eyjafjallajökull which made world headlines back in 2010 for firstly, shutting down air-traffic in the region and across much of Europe for a week and secondly for how impossible it was for any news reader around the world to pronounce its name!

Eyjafjallajökull volcano was covered by a glacier and so glacial melt-water entering the main volcanic vent caused the huge explosive eruption and resulting flight chaos. The current eruption is in an area not covered by glaciers or snow so no/highly unlikely chance of a repeat of 2010.

Looking forward to returning this September running my third 14-day 4-star, “Iceland and Auroras” adventure.

Take a look at the trip map for our 14-day "Iceland and Auroras" adventure.

Whilst most tour operators offer 7, 9 or even up 11-day trips to traverse the whole of the country, I find that that's WAAAAY too fast and ends up skipping some stunning areas and sights, involves way too many early starts and long drives and far too may one-night stops one after the other.

That's why our Iceland trip takes a lovey and relaxed 14 days to venture around this stunning island nation. Four 2-night stays on the trip to help slow the [ace down and let you truly immerse yourself into the spectacular and surreal landscapes and sights of this unique country.

Some tours even do the whole 1,322 main highway #1, the "Ring Road" in seven days or under, crazy!

Not only that, to get the best of both worlds we design the trip to start in early September. Yes it's a bit cooler than in June through August, easy enough to put on another layer of clothing!

There's method-in-our-madness though as from the end of August, all the kids are back at school, the main uber-busy tourist season is over and most importantly, it's the start of darkness returning overnight after 24/7 summer daylight. That means the opportunity to see one of nature's MOST amazing spectacles, the northern lights!

We've had AMAZING views on them the last two years on the trip and we're now at a peak of the sun's 11-year solar-cycle which is when polar lights are typically at their strongest and occur with higher frequency!

Closing booking every soon for this year exciting adventure:

Start: Reykjavik Saturday 7th Sept
End: Reykjavik Friday 20th Sept

14/05/2024

Well, what an evening it was on Saturday!

Earth was hit by a HUGE solar storm, the biggest continuous 24hr storm since 1932!

I made sure I was "in-place and set up" just before sunset on Saturday evening at a nice secluded back-beach down on the Mornington Peninsula around 1.5 hrs south of my home of Melbourne, Australia.

The solar storm had already hit Earth some 14hrs earlier and was still going strong so all I needed was dark and clear southerly skies after sunset. Around 6pm, around 45minutes after sunset, the first hints of colour started to show up in my Nikon images. As full darkness arrived, the pesky clouds to the south over Bass Straight eventually disappeared and then for the next four hours was treated to quite the "show"!

A HUGE naked-eye grey-ish glow due south with the occasional strong vertical "beams" of soft white light reaching halfway up the sky from the horizon. Even some very easily naked-eye visible soft pastel crimsons and the slightest tinge of soft pastel green on the lower sections just above the horizon.

For such a "low latitude" (latitude, not altitude) 38º of the equator, quite amazing to have been able to see it all with the naked-eye and even with some very faint pastel colours!

Still nothing like the mesmerising northern lights my guests and I see clearly whilst on either my "Arctic Circle and Auroras" or "Iceland and Auroras" adventures, yet it was still such a the thrill to have been able to witness this from pretty much my own back yard in Australia.

We're hitting a peak in solar activity as part of our nearest star's 11-year solar cycle. If even you are ever looking to book a northern lights holiday then the sis the time to join me in Iceland this September on my 14-day "Iceland and Auroras" adventure or in Jan/Feb on the 14-day "Arctic Circle and Auroras"!

The Universe is truly amazing!

First seven photos were with my Nikon Z6 mirrorless with Nikkor 14-24 f2.8 lens.

The last one was a hand-held with my iPhone14Pro 🌌

09/05/2024

For those guests joining my April/May 2025 25-day "Splendours of South America" bucket-list adventure, I'll be offering as per 2-23 the special 3-day "pre-tour" Nazca/Ica and Pisco trip!

- 2 nights in the stunning Hotel Viñas Quierolo winery
- Paracas National Park coastline and town guided visit
- Tacoma Distillery (South America's oldest!) visit for cellar tour and pisco tasting
- Huacachina oasis visit (and optional exhilarating sand-dune buggy rides)
- Highlight Nazca Lines 1.5hour flight!
- One dinner, 2 lunches, 2 breakfasts
- all transport from and back to Lima

To finally see the famed and mysterious Nazca Lines was certainly one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had and a huge tick off my own bucket-list.

Just three cabins (twin or double share) left on our April 2025 10-day "Quito and Galapagos Islands Private Cruise" and 15 guests already booked onto the April/May 25-day "Splendours of South America" adventure.

Please contact me for more information on any of these :) Tim

This trip was originally set to go back in 2020 as my "Russia,, Belarus, Poland and Baltics" 22-day tour. With multiple cancelations and restarts due to covid and then Russia's barbaric invasion of Ukraine I'm not supporting Russia (nor Belarus) by heading there and so have finally worked-out the new itinerary.

Great little BBC news story on the northern lights in Rovaniemi and Sodankylä up in Finnish Lapland where I take my winter groups each February and March.

This year and 2025 we’ll be at the solar maximum of the sun’s 11-year cycle whereby the number of sunspots and CME’s (basically solar flares) ultimately give rise to stronger and more frequent auroras.

If considering a holiday that involves northern lights in Scandinavia, Finland or Iceland then layer this year or early 2025 is a great time to tick one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World off your travel list.

🇮🇸🇫🇮🇸🇪🇳🇴🌌🥂

Come and join us on either our Sept 2024 or 2025 “Iceland and Auroras” or Jan/Feb 2025 “Arctic Circle and Auroras” trips! ❄️🌌🥂

With another 14 guests booked on board for 2025 in just the last two weeks alone we're now already fully-booked on both Feb/March 2025 winter northern lights adventures!

With a little foresight the "QVH Hotel Contracting Dept" decided a few months ago to take a "just-in-case risk" and lock-in some of the key iconic accommodations for a potential third trip. Most of these book-out well over a year in advance (ie. the famed and iconic Kakslauttanen Glass Igloos in Finland, Sorrisniva Ice Hotel in Norway and any hotel in Rovaniemi on the Finnish Arctic Circle!)

Is it just me or is everyone else also being bombarded by northern lights tours on social media at the moment? My second image is a collage of what I've being inundated with in just the last 24 hours! (Our phones are listening....)

Very confusing to those who are interested in looking at a northern lights trip with so many operators pushing quite incredibly low pricing along with their fancy marketing.

At the end of the day, you typically will get (or don't get) what you pay (or don't pay) for.

To help navigate all of the fancy social media posts by well-paid marketing teams from them all, here's a very simple checklist of what to ask of each tour operator when looking into these (or any other) northern lights group tours.

Ultimately it's great now to have so much new competition in this space (no pun intended) and at different price-points to cater for all budgets. Just watch out for the sneaky working of "see" versus "visit" "perhaps try..?" rather than "included visit" and all those hidden extras etc etc.

It seems most are aiming at a low price-point for their trips rather than aiming at a winter holiday "experience-point".

The old mantra we learned as Tour Managers/Tour Directors, "Did you save to come away or did you come away to save?"

Do it once, do it right I say...

A drive-day that almost deserves a post all of its own. Day 12 of 14 the spectacular drive westward from Alta (69.9° N) to beautiful Tromsø (69.5° N).

A morning farewell to friend Bern who joined for 3-days as a surprise visit as we journeyed northward to cross officially 70° N latitude following fjords and mountain passes with two ferry crossings to reach “The Paris of the North”.

An introduction to the famed Linie Norwegian akavit, at 220yo the world’s oldest distiller of this potent Scandi schnaps.

Moët arrival drinks by the striking Arctic Cathedral to celebrate reaching our final destination (along with impending birthdays and anniversaries) on the 14-day “Arctic Circle and Auroras” adventure.

A city walking orientation before more drinks at Tromsø’s 100+ yo Ølhallen beer hall.

Some faint late-night auroras teasing a few of us into the wee hours.

And days 13 and 14 of my first 14-day “Arctic Circle and Auroras” trip for 2024.

The last full-day of the big adventure!

A very lazy 10:00am start today (none of these 8:30am or earlier starts here, this is a holiday for my guests after all!)

City tour of beautiful Tromsø with fun local guide Jørgen and in a fully-electric coach.

A drive around the historic 19th C wooden section of town before heading out to “Whale Island” for views over the sspectacular Lyngen Alps reaching almost 1,900m.

A visit to the impressive Arctic Church before the breathtaking cable-car journey up to Fjellheisen some 420m above the surrounding city.

Free-time to explore the city befire our highlight final degustation dinner at Tromsø’s finest restaurant, Emma’s Drømmekjøkken (“Emma’s DreamKitchen”)

Final drinks and fond farwells as we celebrate new friendships and fun adventures and many laughs on the first of two big “Arctic Circle and Auroras” trips for 2024!

Stunning views flying out of Tromsø late morning heading back to Stockholm to do it all over again with 20 more excited Aussies!

Day 12 of my 14 “Arctic Circle and Auroras” trip.

Our longest yet most beautiful drive day.

Departing Alta city at 69.96° north we traverse around the beautiful 38km long Altafjord surrounded by spectacular snow-covered Alps lit up by the morning sun. (Even a couple of dolphins swimming by as we drove 🐬🐬)

Finally crossing 70° north latitude before heading westward over and through mountains and various fjords with leisurely lunchstop in Storslotten village.

A quick surprise “Moët sunset stop” before a 4:30pm arrival into beautiful Tromsø, “The Paris of the North” for our last two nights staying at the very central Radisson Blu.

An evening at leisure for everyone but not before an orientation of the pretty town centre and visit to its iconic 1920s Mack brewery “Ølhallen” beer hall 🇳🇴🍻🏔️

And our afternoon of day 11 of my 14 “Arctic Circle and Auroras” trip.

A fascinating visit to a Sami reindeer herder family to learn from local Sami “Nils” all about their culture and traditions including meeting some of their herd (and impromptu sleigh-ride!) 🦌🛷🇳🇴❄️

An evening at leisure for my guests to explore Alta for its lovely local restaurants. (A delicious gourmet reindeer pizza with lingonberries and local Norwegian cheese for me 🍕🦌🫐🇳🇴🍽️)
