Before v After:

If you’re thinking about custom electroplating for your espresso machine, our experience is that this expensive coating is experimental- at best.

This is our Cremina, a good 12 months after it was souped up. It hasn’t been used. When we did try to use it, we found the coating was sufficiently thick inside the group (where it shouldn’t be) that it made the portafilter impossible to load, so we removed it. A microfibre cloth used super carefully on the outside to protect the coating while we worked shows that it’s non-stick.

As a set of photos, the result was great, but the reality is that this expensive finish is beyond fragile. We’re calling it junk and our thoughts are that we will waste more time and money and bead blast it away.

Don’t do it!

What do they say about ink? You get some, you want more!

Tomorrow, we farewell our beautiful door art by the amazing .colors. This was our first splash of art at TC and it brought so much pleasure during those lockdown days where it was just me, a roaster, a mask and grey walls. Some days it felt like it would never end.

Our locals loved our colours too! More “ink” followed. Now it’s time for what’s next…

From Thursday when you visit, you’ll be able to check out our new art and we’re super excited to share Cande’s new mural with you.

As always, there’s coffee and banter- so now you have another excuse to visit.

Do you use the hot water wand of your machine? If you don’t, please do!

As you draw steam from the boiler, you concentrate the mineral content of the boiler water and even in good water areas, it will precipitate out as scale.

In this instance, the scale has blocked a boiler pressure gauge capillary tube and taken out the gauge. We tried clearing it with a thin wire but that was unsuccessful. Acid you say? Rarely works 😬.

Warm a cup, make a cup of tea or just dump some, but please use that hot water supply daily.

The 🐠 that John West rejected:

💩 happens- or so they say. Somehow this super special batch of decaf saw more water than it should have somewhere in the bean to TC transit and nup, it doesn’t pass muster. 🤢

You’d have to wonder what would happen had this bag been part of an automated roasting operation where the bag was mechanically picked, cut and the beans dumped into a roaster without inspection? Client receives a special, extra fermentation or does it get pulled from the cupping table? You’d hope so…🤔

There is a great story out of it though. We opened the bag a few hours after it arrived, failed it and then immediately informed the supplier. They stepped up within 30 minutes with a solution and will do what they need to do to work out if this is batch-wide or if we were just the unlucky recipient of an isolated problem in a single bag which somehow saw water…

Bottom line is we won’t be roasting this batch and sadly, we’re going to have to wait to get more of this. We know it’s fantastic, so we’ll go back and try again.
