Australia’s New Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: Simplified Overview

The Australian government is set to introduce the Skills in Demand (SID) visa on 7 December 2024, replacing the current Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Subclass 482 visa. This new visa aims to better address labor market needs and provide clearer pathways to permanent residency for skilled workers.

Key Features of the SID Visa:
1. Three Distinct Streams:
• Specialist Skills Stream: For highly skilled migrants earning at least $135,000 annually in any occupation, excluding trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, and laborers.
• Core Skills Stream: For skilled workers in occupations listed on the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) with earnings meeting the Core Skills Income Threshold, expected to align with the current Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) of $73,150.
• Essential Skills Stream: Designed for lower-income earners in essential skill occupations, likely similar to the current labor agreement stream.
2. Reduced Work Experience Requirement:
• Applicants now need a minimum of one year of full-time relevant work experience within the five years preceding the visa application, reduced from the previous two-year requirement under the TSS visa.
3. Pathway to Permanent Residency:
• All streams of the SID visa offer a clear route to permanent residency through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa.
4. Employer Sponsorship Obligations:
• Aligns employer sponsorship obligations with labor market mobility reforms introduced on 1 July 2024, ensuring that existing obligations apply to approved work sponsors of SID primary visa holders.

Transitional Arrangements:
• Nominations and visa applications for the TSS visa submitted before the commencement of these amendments will be processed under the regulations in effect at the time of application.

Considerations for Current TSS Visa Holders:
• If your occupation is not on the CSOL or doesn’t qualify for the Specialist Skills or Labor Agreement streams, you won’t have access to the SID visa or the option to change employers under the new provisions.
• However, current TSS visa holders in occupations not listed on the CSOL still have a pathway to permanent residency through the TRT stream of the Subclass 186 visa, subject to meeting relevant eligibility criteria.

The introduction of the SID visa represents a significant shift in Australia’s approach to skilled migration, aiming to address labor shortages more effectively while providing skilled workers with more straightforward pathways to permanent residency.

📢 Australia’s Net Migration Update

Before COVID-19, net migration was projected to reach 300,000 by 2025. However, a recent study led by Migration Hub Director Alan Gamlen reveals that net overseas migration may fall short by 82,000 people compared to initial projections.

This shortfall highlights the ongoing impact of the pandemic on Australia’s migration trends and workforce planning.

Stay tuned for more updates as we track these developments!

This is part 2 of the occupations in demand in Australia due to a skills shortage.

In the list there are occupations with short training gaps with few qualified applicants such as Retail managers to those with a ‘Suitability gap’ such as construction managers or civil engineering professionals.

And finally this list also includes jobs with below average rates of retention such as HR professionals, Chefs, Child carers and aged carers

These are the occupations that are in demand and have a longer training gap based on 2023 results.

Longer training gap occupations are those that have a long training pathway (could be due to undergrad degrees or apprenticeship required) and there is a significant lag involved in the training process to actually working.
