African Drumming

African Drumming West African drums, art, drum and dance classes, tours and retreats. We believe in uniting cultures through the power of music.

We are dedicated to sharing the music and culture of West Africa in all that we do: through instrument making, workshops, study tours, and performances. We are the largest African music store in Australia and we love our drums! We are committed to giving back to our planet and ensuring our ventures are eco-friendly and sustainable, including the management of two Tree planting initiatives across G

hana and Indonesia. With an international network of drummers and dancers, our team includes performers and drum makers from around West Africa including Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Ghana, and homegrown Aussie talent too. The rhythm journey is a beautiful and often profound paradox, its depth knows no bounds. It has been our goal to take the drum to as many corners of the world as possible. Once it’s there, the vibration of the rhythm goes to work and magic happens.

Meet Abampaka. She weaves kiss kass shakers in Northern Ghana πŸ‡¬πŸ‡
β€œWeaving was not my thing, until I got married and got to my husband’s house, and saw my mother-in-law and her daughters engaged in basket weaving.
I was excited when my mother-in-law asked me to join them.
I learnt quickly and ever since I have not stopped weaving.β€œ

Drumming can help reduce STRESS and promote MINDFULNESS 😁

Mindfulness involves an intense concentration on events happening in the present. Drumming requires you to focus on your actions and be in the moment! 🎡

Have you had a drum today?

As a species, we are born to dance 🎢
Brain-imaging studies of newborns have shown that they notice if rhythmic music unexpectedly skips a beat. By the time they are 5 months old, this ability ties in with movement, too.

Research shows that babies are able to move their bodies in time with music at this stage, and that the better they are at bopping along, the more they smile. Even at a tender age, moving to music seems to make us feel good 😁

According to studies led by neuroscientist Morten Kringlebach at the University of Oxford, the feel-good factor is because our brains work as prediction machines that constantly make guesses about what is likely to happen next. In this view, a regular beat is satisfying because it makes it easy to predict what is coming. Each time we are correct, we get a small hit of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in feelings of pleasure ☺️

πŸͺ˜DUNUN SOLOSπŸͺ˜
🎢This skill requires experience and a deep understanding of the given rhythm. The dununfola must have the sensitivity and skill to solo while still holding the foundation of the groove.

🎢Dunun soloing demands a different form of dexterity than the djembe does. You must consider what to accent and when to use space.

🎢Experienced players will often trade solos with their fellow dunun and djembefola.

This clip showcases a group of Ghanaian musicians using duns in an improvised fashion

Our Story

Established in 1997, African Drumming is Australia’s trusted name in West African music. We are dedicated to sharing the music and culture of West Africa in all that we do: through classes, workshops, study tours and performances which connect a wide audience with this powerful music. Not to mention our instruments! We are Australia’s largest dedicated African musical shop - if there is something special you’re looking for, chances we will have it! In 2011 we relocated from a little store in Grey Street to a larger purposed Head Quarters @ 252 St Kilda Rd, St Kilda. Our HQ houses both the brains and brawn of the operation, with our showroom, studios, offices, warehouse and the all important drum making workshop here under one jamming roof. We love it in St Kilda! We also have outlets/ manufacturing arms in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Indonesia We have a wonderful network of drummers, dancers, musicians and instrument makers across the globe and thrive on growing our community of rhythm lovers. We’re always looking to the future and constantly working on the next big project, event and product.
