Excellent news and an important service for patients and carers travelling on V/Line to medical appointments in Melbourne 👏👏

Some good news for V-Line travelers, the service has finally updated to allowed bookings of accessible spaces!

The new initiative will roll out across all long-distance reserved trains on the V/Line network, including Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Albury, and Bairnsdale services.

Passengers with mobility aids will continue to be able to travel on an unreserved ticket where there is space available.

Passengers can book an accessible space through the V/Line website, their local staffed V/Line station, premium Metro Station, ticket agent, or by calling 1800 800 007.

"We had a wonderful couple of days in Melbourne. The RocKwiz 'Really Really Good Friday' event was fantastic. We even caught up with Paul’s Support Coordinator who attended.​

We were completely spoilt staying at (MediStays partner) Vibe Hotel Melbourne. When we opened the door to our room, the curtains automatically opened. On the desk was a little handwritten personal note welcoming us and complimentary chocolates / macaron under a glass dome. How lovely 🥰. At MediStays, we are so fortunate to share our office with the wonderful Deaf Connect team!

In anticipation of Auslan Day on Saturday 13th April, we got together with Brent, Grant, Sam and the team for a fun session. We learnt about their language, culture and important advocacy work for Australia’s deaf community.

Auslan was so much fun to learn! We’re very fortunate our office mates are dedicated to the cause and supporting MediStays team in our learning. This is so important to build on our support for an inclusive society.

BTW, did you know, Auslan stands for Australian Sign Language? Auslan Day celebrates the rich history, culture, community and language of the Australian Deaf community by honouring the date of first publication of the Auslan dictionary.

Diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020, John required six weeks of concurrent radiation and chemotherapy in Melbourne. Living on the Victorian Gippsland coast, John’s initial diagnosis had already been delayed due to the bushfires.​

Fortunately for John, he was reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team in Melbourne with the recommendation he undergo six weeks curative intent treatment. John shared that “the problem was that I didn’t know where to stay and basically couldn’t afford it. It was all a bit much and, to be honest, I was pretty tempted not to go. Luckily for me, my friend had recently been at The Alfred for a heart bypass and told me about MediStays.”​

John’s wife called MediStays, and we arranged everything for his upcoming journey. Our team ensured he could access world-class treatment without delay. In John’s case, MediStays rates in a fully self-contained apartment were $105/night (best available public rate $159) and our Care Navigators linked him to the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS) subsidy.​

“I saw a lot of people at the hospital and they were very good. I received the best care. But I think it’s hard for them to understand the barriers for country patients. Finding somewhere to stay and no-one mentioned the financial assistance".​

Thankfully, John was connected to VPTAS funding through our MediStays Care Navigator team.​

The Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme Guidelines state -" Principles to guide decision-making -
•Equity—the scheme facilitates equitable access to specialist healthcare services across Queensland"

The 4 night rule does not reflect equitable access to the scheme

'6.2 Payment of the first four nights’ accommodation

Eligible patients are required to pay the first four nights of accommodation (commercial or private) in each financial year, unless they meet the following criteria in which case the patient and their es**rt/s are exempt:

Patient is a minor (under 18 years of age)

Concession card holder - if a patient holds one of the following valid cards:

Pensioner Concession Card

Centrelink Health Care Card

Commonwealth Seniors Health Card

Department of Veteran Affairs Health Card (blue/white card only).

If a patient does not have a concession card, the approved es**rt is also required to pay for the first four nights of accommodation in each financial year. Where the es**rt has a concession card and the patient does not, neither are eligible for a concession.'

In June 2023, MediStays founder and Managing Director, Sarah Everitt, attended Parliament House in Canberra for the “Shining a light: Radiotherapy cancer treatment in Australia” report launch with Evohealth, Varian Medical Systems, Lung Foundation Australia and Rare Cancers Australia.

MediStays was included in the report because of our directory of nationwide accommodation and financial assistance that supports Australians diagnosed with cancer.​
​
Our key focus has been on 'Recommendation Three':​

"Support a national directory of travel and accommodation for those needing to travel for cancer treatment. The service will include available services provided in each state and territory and provide guidance on eligibility."​

Now, more than one year on, MediStays has progressed on this with:​

Today is International Women's Day. What better day to celebrate our team full of such incredible women?

One of theme's this year is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’.

MediStays is an international team made up of women from across Australia, New Zealand and Europe (plus our COO, Craig!). There is a diverse range in backgrounds, including healthcare, medical research, hotelier and hospitality, business and tech, and disability support. There are those with lived experience of the service we provide, as well as comprehensive professional experience.

Due to the nature of the MediStays mission, it is crucial to have the right mix of skills and experience on our team.
