As the winter cold sets into Melbourne this is the ideal time to brush away the winter chills with a visit to the Peninsula Hot Springs. I took my two children there a few weeks ago and was amazed at the new renovation and massive expansion of pools available. If you haven’t been in the last year, it is well worth a visit.

There is something wonderful about getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoying the sea breezes and quiet seaside charm of Rye.

But sometime relaxing is catching up on our favourite TV show and of you are anything like me, watching maybe a whole season in a couple of days.

Well our Our Escape at Rye has unlimited broadband so our guests this summer will be able to stream all their favourites. And I double checked our broadband speed and we are getting a lighting fast 47 Mbps thanks to an upgraded NBN connection.

Merry Christmas to all our guests staying over the holiday season, and to all who have stayed or Our Escape at Rye in 2018.

In preparation for the summer season we have added more air conditioning, now with cooling in all four bedrooms. Hopefully this will make it extra comfortable stay as we start to get into the summer season.

Finally, we have updated one of the bedrooms with a new queen bed and pop up single. This makes the house more flexible in accommodating both large family and couples. So we now have 3 queen beds, 4 single beds, and a single/queen convertible day bed.

Last year we installed solar on our beach house as part of our commitment to be environmentally friendly, but also to help out on the power bills through the summer season, when air-conditioning is a must.

So the question is... how much does solar really assist in the power consumption and savings? Well practically we are finding between 40-50% of total electricity usage is reduced and then we are feeding back into the grid surplus energy. Reduction in costs can be up to 50% but that depends on how energy efficient your house is at night.

But finally, is it worth it. I think that it is both a positive contribution to the environment and makes good financial sense in the long run.

This time of the year, that we look back over the last 12 months, thanks to the taxman. And after working through all the receipts, 2017/2018 was a massive year of improvements for our beach house with nearly $12,000 invested to make it more comfortable and enjoyable.

Some of the changes were less obvious like the renovation of the outdoor balcony, repairing the internal gutters and replacing worn out exterior timbers. Then there are more visible changes such as repainting of the house exterior to the deep blue, repainting external decks, and finally the new backyard outdoor garden. Internally, we refreshed all the bedding with new wool duvets (warm in winter), new pillows with bamboo fibre, and my favourite - large European Pillows on the queen beds. Finally there was some major appliance changes, such as new fridge shelving, repaired gas burners, new 40 inch HD TV upstairs, and a new 6kg clothes dryer. The single largest expense was a replacement of the air-conditioning units to new high-efficiency and powerful Mitsubishi units both upstairs and in the main lounge. And I almost forgot, this year we also went “green” with a 5.5kw solar unit that reduces our carbon footprint by about 50%.

We are starting a new round of improvements ready for the summer season to make the beach house more enjoyable and relaxing than ever.

I learned a new term from good friend and expert photographer Ben Goh Photo about High Dynamic Range (HDR) which expands the full light of the image. All I know is that the photos look amazing.

We are still enjoying beautiful autumn weather in Rye, with a sunny 20 degrees yesterday. The beaches are clear and clean, and the hustle of the summer has dissipate. I stayed the weekend recently and enjoyed escaping the city, taking in the fresh sea breezes and soaking in the quieter pace.

I often get asked about what family friendly activities there are in Rye in addition to have fun on the beach.
My favourites: The Enchanted Maze for a full day of fun for all ages; playing at the Sorento Park and then lunch at Hotel Sorento; and enjoying the cafes in Blairgowrie.
