Observed by Orthodox Christians that follow the Julian calendar, Orthodox Christmas commemorates the birth of Christ.

It is celebrated by attending Church services, fasting, and feasting with loved ones.

Sunday is the twelfth day of Christmas, the traditional time to take down your Christmas decorations and tree 🎄

If you chose a natural Christmas tree this year, here’s how you can dispose of it responsibly ♻️

✨ Book a bundled branch collection ➡️ hume.vic.gov.au/branch-collection
✨ Put it in your food and garden bin ➡️ hume.vic.gov.au/green-bin
✨ Take it to a Resource Recovery Centre ➡️ hume.vic.gov.au/rrc
✨ Take it to a free mulching day ➡️ hume.vic.gov.au/mulching

Size limits and other conditions apply – check the links for details.

By using one of these options, you are making sure that your tree is turned into mulch or compost and return nutrients to the soil. What a great way to start the year!

Now that the stockings have been unstuffed, it’s time to deal with the Christmas day aftermath.

Here are our post-Christmas clean-up tips:

🎁 Tear wrapping paper to check that it’s 100% paper before putting in the recycling bin. (You could also save it for next year!)

🎀 Put any foil or plastic-coated wrapping paper and plastic ribbons in the garbage bin

🗑️ Plastic bags and cling wrap always go in the garbage bin

📦 Put flattened cardboard boxes in your recycling bin, or drop them off for free at one of our Resource Recovery Centres

🦐 Keep prawn tails and other stinky food waste in the freezer until bin night (they go in your food and garden bin)

🧃 Take empty drink cans, bottles and cartons to a CDS refund point and your get 10c refund

🪫 New toys or tech upgrades? Never put batteries or electronics in your household bins - drop them off for safe recycling at a Resource Recovery Centre or recycling hub

🎄 Take your natural Christmas tree to one of our mulching days, chop it up for your green bin or book a bundled branch collection
