The Twelve Apostles, located along the iconic Great Ocean Road in Australia, earned their name due to their grandeur and magnificence. Although fewer than twelve formations remain today due to natural erosion, the name has endured.

Originally, these formations were called "The Sow and Piglets," with Muttonbird Island representing the sow and the smaller rocks around it being the piglets. In the 1950s, in an effort to attract more tourists, the name was changed to "The Twelve Apostles," evoking a more grand and attractive image, despite never actually having twelve pillars.

The new name helped to increase the location's notoriety, highlighting these impressive limestone stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean, creating one of Australia's most iconic and visited landscapes.
