Compass Expeditions

Compass Expeditions Our Adventure Motorcycle Tours are some of the most spectacular journeys on this planet – join us

Compass Expeditions was formed off the back of an incredible fund-raising ride from London to Magadan, in Siberia back in 2005. We started with one Toyota Landcruiser as a support vehicle, five bikes and a lot of enthusiasm. Our expeditions are the experience of a lifetime, crossing continents to explore some of the most unique and beautiful places on earth.

Konichiwa! One of our most popular recent additions to the tour roster, Rising Sun departs again in October. Here's the plan:

Day 1:
Your airport transfer will take you directly to our joining hotel, ready for the start tomorrow. Today you will meet your crew for your tour briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2:
We collect our bikes from Yokohama and soon hit the winding narrow roads of the Nakatsu River region for some beautiful riding. We ride north before reaching the wonderful 100 year old Takaragawa Onsen (hot Springs) to end our first night, on the road, in Japan

Day 3:
Riding what’s known as the Romantic Road we enter the remarkable Japan Alps, a breathtaking landscape of mountainscapes dotted with traditional villages. We ride the highest point of the national road network in the Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park and visit the renowned snow monkeys before overnighting at a beautiful lodge in the Kamishiro Mountain area.

Day 4:
Turning south we visit the amazing Matsumoto Castle (Crow Castle) from 1594 and home to Japan’s oldest keep. From here we ride what’s often described as one of Japan’s finest rides, the Venus Line, before turning west and spending the night at the traditional village in Hirayu spectacularly located in the Japan Alps.

Day 5:
Some more superb riding today as we enjoy the wonderful Shirakawa-go White Line Road that’s only open for a few months each year and connects a string of UNESCO listed traditional villages that border the dramatic Hakusan National Park. Descending the mountains, we reach Awara where we stay at the magnificent Grania Housen.

Day 6:
Leaving Awara we ride the coastline enjoying the superb Mikata Five Lakes Rainbow Line where we can see the 5 different coloured lakes. It's a cable car to the top of the mountain for breathtaking views of this magnificent region of lakes and mountains We continue along the coastline to Kumihama, yet another spectacularly located hotel with sweeping views of Kumihama Bay.

Day 7:
Leaving Kumihama Bay we ride inland then onto the coast visiting the remarkable sand dunes of Tottori, the largest sand dunes of Japan. We then cross the Chugoku Mountain range via a series of quiet backcountry roads before entering the Hiroshima Prefecture. We will spend the next two nights at the port city of Onomichi surrounded by hills full of temples, and cats! allowing us time to travel to Hiroshima the following day by bullet train.

Day 8:
Today we swap the bikes for something a little quicker, the Shinkansen (bullet Train) to Hiroshima. A city that for most people means one thing, the world’s first atomic bomb that destroyed 90% of the city and instantly killed 80,000 people. We visit the moving Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the UNESCO listed Atomic Bomb Dome before catching a ferry to Miyajima with its famous 6th Century Itsukushima – jinja shrine and its "seemingly" floating Torii Gate, one of the most photographed sites in Japan.

Day 9:
From Onomichi we cross onto the island of Shikoku via the spectacular Shimanami Kaido, a series of bridges that connect 6 islands in the Seto Inland Sea, a favourite of pirates in days gone by. We ride onto Iya Valley, a remote landscape of incredibly deep gorges, rushing rivers, mountain forests & home to 800-year-old vine suspension bridges, not to mention a bizarre “scarecrow village”.

Day 10:
We ride the spectacular mountains roads around Mt Tsurugi on narrow winding roads that are virtually empty. We cross onto the mainland via the mighty Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge of almost four kilometres and continue on to the former imperial capital of Japan of Kyoto. We spend two nights here allowing us time to visit this amazing city of shrines & temples.

Day 11:
With a 1000 Buddhist temples & 400 Shinto Shrines a city guide is a must and we spend the day exploring this culturally rich and beautiful city. We visit the renown Fushimi Inari-Taisha, with its 1000s of Torii gates, and Kinkaku - Ju Buddhist Temple to name a few sights we shall see. We will also enjoy a wonderful Geisha experience that introduces us to the mysterious 400 year old tradition.

Day 12:
Departing Kyoto and the big city lights we are soon back on the byroads that wend their way along the Abo Valley. We take a lakeside ride along the top of Lake Biwa before ascending into the mountains of Central Honshu and riding its small back roads before arriving at our overnight stop of Gujo, scenically located at the confluence of the Nagara & Yoshida rivers.

Day 13:
We ride the Kiso Valley today, a landscape of lush forests, clear streams and remote villages that formed part of what was known as the Nakasendo, an ancient highway from Edo (nowadays Tokyo) to Kyoto. We visit one of the best preserved of these villages, Magome. The ride continues north through the Central Alps before we get our first glimpses of the iconic Mt Fuji. Our overnight stay is at Yamanakako located on the shore of a lake bearing the same name with epic views of Mt Fuji.

Day 14:
With views of Mt Fuji in our mirrors we cross onto the Izu Peninsula known for its stunning coastlines, Onsen and mountainous interior. We ride the spectacular Nishu Isu Skyline as well as more off the beaten tracks today as we explore the many winding roads through the peninsular and visit the wonderful Kawazu Seven Waterfalls.

Day 15:
Our last day with see us ride the superb Izu Skyline and then the amazing Tsubaki Line before riding back into Yokohama to return the bikes. We shall have our farewell dinner and a chance to reminisce over what has been an extraordinary journey through the pages of history and via a breathtaking landscape of this magnificent & unique part of the world

Departure Day:
Spend a couple more days in Yokohama / Tokyo or fly home.

The Essence of Mongolia by Mick McDonald – Part 1

"Landing in Ulan Bataar bought an immense sense of familiarity, the sense of space, the clarity of the skies, the green of the Mongolian steppe and the reigniting of wonderful friendships, it all left me feeling some sense of normalcy had finally returned.

Veronica and I had arrived at UB to collect our 76 series Landcruiser to run the very first research trip for our 4WD offerings and we were excited to be exploring destinations within Mongolia that we don’t take the bikes to – it’s simply too tough on a bike if you’re not a Dakar god, but in a 4WD the wild tracks of this immense country are ready to be explored.

Leaving UB we were soon in the countryside at the breathtaking Terelj National Park, via the immense Chinggis Khan statue, the largest statue of a horse and man on earth. We had engaged the services of a local drone pilot to capture some 4WD action footage and he soon had us charging up single track passes and running along lofty ridgelines, so awesome were these tracks that we have kept them in as part of our Mongolia 4WD future tours. After exploring parts of Terelj National Park where no other tourist goes, because we got lost, we ended our first day at the superb 5-star Terelj Resort.

Turning south we entered the Middle Gobi, a region we had never explored, and turning off the tarmac we entered a magnificent world of utterly empty steppe save the occasional ger camp with a solitary family fattening their stock in the brief summer months. We were convinced we were lost again but in fact we weren’t but couldn’t believe the lack of any sign of human activity and drove amongst epic valleys following a barely discernible track that threated to peter out into nothing at any moment. The track did indeed lead us somewhere, the incredible rocky landscapes of the Baga Gazarin Churluu National Park where we had our first night in a ger, how we missed these ger camps, it was wonderful to enjoy these simple camps always located in impossibly scenic places.”

On the road with Compass Expeditions Founder Mick McDonald:

"Finally, after too many hours on a plane we touched down in Cape Town, South Africa; those first steps down the ramp onto African soil are always ones filled with anticipation and excitement. More so as I knew exactly what we were in for, being my third ride from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. We rode out of Cape Town on brand new BMW R1250, F850 and a couple of R1200GSA’s.

Quickly out of Cape Town, as the rising sun turned Table Mountain an impressive golden hue, we reached the westernmost point on the African continent at Cape of Good Hope by late morning.

After a night at the luxurious Franschhoek Hotel & Spa we soon hit the dirt tracks into the remarkable Cedarberg’s. We crossed into the North Cape, a region similar in size to Germany and offers some amazing back country riding through remote stations, opening & closing gates as we passed.

Crossing into stunning Namibia we marvelled at the second biggest canyon on earth, Fish River Canyon, before spending a wonderful night in a remote desert lodge having a few beers under a vast carpet of stars as a gentle warm breeze blew in, the silence was breathtaking, truly a special night to remember.

Onto Burgsdorf Goat farm for some of the most amazing Namibian farm hospitably and certainly some of the most wonderful “real country food” of the entire journey. A working farm Burgsdorf offers a real insight to the hard life of Namibian farmers but also how they manage to survive in such a tough environment.

We saw the week out at one of Namibia’s most iconic landscapes, that of the Namib-Nakluft National Park, a landscape of towering sand dunes that turned a wondered red at sunset, made all that special by our 5-star tented resort inside the national park. It certainly doesn’t get any better than having a beer on the edge of the desert watching Oryx pass by as the sun sets over the dunes, wonderful stuff."

"Patagonia Explorer Feb 2024 - Fantastic... just book it!"" – Peter C, Melbourne.

Voted "Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler, our 2025 tour just returned! Here's Peter's review from last year's jaunt:

"We signed up for a Compass Expeditions tour to Patagonia because some friends had done a couple of tours to Mongolia and South America with them in the past.

Our friends organised a third tour and invited myself and my wife along.
Compass Expeditions were fantastic to deal with. Helpful, informative, well organised and the guides in South America were great company.

The guides couldn't do enough for us. Always there to answer questions, fix problems, interpret and all with great patience and humour. They really made the trip a great experience. Would we recommend others do a Compass Tour? Absolutely.

Compass are a professional outfit with a great culture. Highly recommend them."
..so, are you coming next year? Details, dates and prices here: https://compassexpeditions.com/tours/patagonia-explorer/

Let's hear from Compass Co-Owner, Director, Road Crew and Scribe Jerry Truman Cook!

"Felix and I led the inaugural Spain, Portugal and Morocco tour in 2019 and it was also one of the last Compass Expeditions tours to run before the onset of the dreaded Covid. Three years later it was time to run this magical tour again and knowing what was ahead, we were very excited.

The majority of the group are Australian, but we also have Rex from California and Rob from BC, Canada, both of whom have travelled with Compass before. In fact, most of the group have travelled with Compass before – though it was really nice to see some new faces at the tour briefing which took place at the beautiful Bessa hotel, conveniently located in downtown Lisbon. Also coming along with us and driving a second support vehicle is Antonio, a local guide who also travelled with Felix and I back in 2019. There was a sense of déjà vu about this trip!

Arriving to Lisbon we met with the group who had also taken advantage of spending a few weeks and in some cases, months travelling prior to the tour. Being locked down for so long and with global borders open again, international travel was back on!

After collecting the bikes – all being new model BMW GS – we were very anxious to hit the road the next day.

The first couple of the days of the tour were spent in the south of Portugal riding some amazing back roads around Sagres and Tavira crossing the heart of the Alentejo and Algarve regions.

More beautiful back roads led us into Spain, crossing the Guadiana River and skirting the city of Seville. Our accommodation was a 500-year-old hacienda (traditional ranch) in the south of Spain. The hospitality provided by our host Dona Francisca was second to none and we had a wonderful meal which consisted mainly of produce grown at the hacienda and local wine.

One comment from the group was “staying at places like this really makes the trip” and another couple of riders commented “Best riding day ever” and “Compass has the best tours and routes, that’s why I am customer for life”. We were certainly off to a good start.

This tour departs once again in September 2025 – read the rest of the blog and find the booking link here: https://compassexpeditions.com/blog/spain-portugal-morocco-2022-tour-blog/

BETTER DAYS: BMW F 900 GS REVIEW

BMW’s F 900 GS is everything I wanted the F 850 GS to be – lighter, faster, slimer and just, well, better!

BMW’s F 850 GS is a nice enough adventure tourer. It’s not too heavy, not too tall, easy to get along with, and doesn’t place too many demands on its rider as long as you play sensibly off-road. In short, the 850 is a solid all-rounder. But—and I don’t mean to aggravate the 850 owners out there—let’s be frank, it’s not the most exciting nor capable adventure machine on the planet.

BMW has seen fit to rectify that with the release of its F 900 GS, and this bike is an entirely different beast—and I do mean beast.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on BMW’s F 850 GS over the years, especially in recent history on various tours with Compass, which has and continues to use the 850 extensively.

The 900 is a big, big departure from the bike it replaces. Obviously, it looks far sexier—if you like your adventure machinery looking like it’s ready for combat. With its sharper, more modern design comes a far slimmer bike with far superior ergonomics, especially when the going gets dirty. Quite simply, the 900 is lighter, more powerful, and far more capable off-road without losing much when it comes to punching out tarmac miles.

I have a limited word budget, so let’s get to the numbers quickly. Horsepower has increased from 95 hp (71 kW) on the 850 to 105 hp (77 kW) for the 900. Torque is also up and now sits at 93 Nm. Weight is down, with the 900 tipping the scales at a claimed 219 kg, fuelled and ready to ride—around 14 kg lighter than the 850. Seat height is up by 10 mm to 860 mm, but with the 900’s skinnier waist, the real-world experience of getting your feet on the deck will feel much the same. These figures are very, very similar to KTM’s 890 Adventure R, arguably the most off-road capable adventure bike on the market.

Where the 850 feels a bit soft and lounge-like, the 900 feels far tauter—more enduro-bike-like. It’s not uncomfortable as such; it just feels more sure-footed, ready for action, and perhaps more aggressive. Where the 850 felt like a road bike playing at being an adventure machine, the 900 is completely at home on the dirt and on the road.

Sometimes, it can take a while to get your head around a new bike, but that wasn’t the case here. From the moment I climbed aboard, I felt comfortable. I wasn’t even 10 metres into the first dirt section before I was hanging the back end out and having a whale of a time.

The suspension package deserves much of the credit for the 900’s abilities. The F 900 GS Enduro you see here sports 45 mm fully adjustable Showa forks and a fully adjustable Sachs shock at the rear, delivering 230 mm of travel up front and 215 mm at the rear. The suspension is superb, and if you’re finding the limits of the 900’s standard kit, you’re either really bloody fast or really bloody—ah—generously proportioned.

As I mentioned, the 850 was a comfortable and capable adventure machine as long as you stayed sensible off-road. But there was a glaring problem for those who like to hit the road and stop infrequently: its piddly 15-liter fuel capacity. And in an interesting plot twist, BMW decided to reduce the fuel capacity further, giving the 900 a 14.5-liter tank. Sure, you have the option of purchasing the F 900 GS Adventure if you want the extra gas, but then you lose the weight advantage that the 900 has eked out over the 850.

The 850’s limited fuel range has been a factor on some Compass tours, where 15 litres pushes the friendship of reaching your destination—so 14.5 litres will make things even tighter when the 900 joins the fleet.

The 900 is much closer to KTM’s 890 Adventure R than it is to the 850 but retains enough of the 850’s user-friendly nature that it shouldn’t deter 850 owners from stepping up. If you’re comparing the F 900 GS Enduro to the KTM 890, the equation becomes significantly more difficult. The KTM is the better off-road machine—it just is. The harder you push it, the better it gets. The KTM also has a 23-liter tank, but that extra payload brings its fully fuelled weight to around 246 kg, 27 kilograms heavier than the GS Enduro. That said, if you opt for the 900 GS Adventure with its 23-liter tank, it weighs in at a claimed 246 kilograms—so, same-same.

But there’s one whopping great tick in the BMW’s box: its reputation for reliability over the KTM. Whether there’s an actual difference is debatable. The internet is awash with horror stories of KTM cam issues, but I owned a 990 Adventure R years back, and it didn’t miss a beat in the time I owned it and I put 80,000 kilometres on that trusty rig.

As much as I love KTMs, I think I’d rather be on a BMW when I’m in the middle of Namibia’s desert regions or powering up a mountain range in Kyrgyzstan with night falling—because I just know it’s going to make it.

If you’ve got an 850 and you’ve even slightly hesitated about upgrading to the 900, I say go for it. With a starting price of $21,655 for the base model F 900 GS (the GS Enduro tested will set you back just over $27k), it’s a better adventure bike—possible way except fuel capacity. It’ll have you feeling mighty and capable when you hit the dirt, and when you’re feeling confident, you ride better and have more fun. And that’s why we do this motorcycle thing, isn’t it? To have fun.

Asian Overland has just departed – these brave adventurers are riding all the way from Singapore to Beijing.

An extraordinary, unique and challenging motorcycle journey offering some of the finest landscapes on earth – Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and China. From lush impenetrable verdant forests to the towering snow-capped peaks of the Himalaya, remote empty highways to vibrant mega-cities, hill tribes to beach dwellers and world-renowned UNESCO listed sites to unknown antiquities, this ride truly highlights the amazing diversity of Asia across two hemispheres.

Starting off in the cosmopolitan Singapore we quickly cross into Malaysia and escape into the stunning Cameron Highlands . Malaysia offers a surprise with superb eating and stunning highland and coastal scenery, while Thailand offers some of the most extraordinary coastal scenery on earth with legendary towering limestone Karsts that populate sheltered coves dotting the coastline. We visit the famous “Bridge of the River Kwai” before riding further north in Thailand where we visit the legendary Karen hillside tribes around Chiang Mai, as well as riding some extraordinary roads. We spend a week in French-influenced Laos and visit one of Asia’s most stunning temple complexes at Luang Prabang on the Mekong. We enter one of the world’s biggest countries, China, home to some of the earth's most remarkable civilizations, the world’s highest mountain peaks, stupendous scenery, amazing roller coaster high altitude highways, 1000-year-old villages and some of mankind’s greatest antiquities. As soon as we enter China we experience what is the quintessential Chinese scenery of ancient rice terraces that cling to the hillsides seemingly with every inch under cultivation. We soon enter the high altitude region of Tibet and visit the capital of Lhasa with its world-renowned Potala Palace. The riding, across the roof of the world, is absolutely incredible and the view from Everest Base Camp offers staggering views of Mount Everest. Descending via three 5,000m passes we reach Xian, home to the amazing Terracotta Army and we visit villages that give us a glimpse of the “Old China” with their ancient city walls and narrow alleyways jammed with vendors. Riding triumphantly into Beijing after traveling over 20,000km / 12,500mi across two hemispheres we visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City before enjoying a celebratory meal and a few well-earned drinks at the completion of what has been one of the worlds greatest long distance rides.

See you in 90 days!
