Congratulations Naomi!

Having just returned from the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair a few weeks back, it's great to see current parent and artist Naomi Hobson recognised as a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2017!

The 39 finalists were selected from an original 461 applicants, and are now showing at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, which hosts the Prize.

(Her work selected for the Sunshine Prize included in the comments below.)

After a fantastic five days at 2017, a group of intrepid students head home, posing for a final pic at Gove airport. Flying the red-eye out of Darwin, they should just be touching down in Melbourne about now.

Final morning of a fantastic few days at Garma. There'll be some great stories to be shared this week!

Few will perhaps remember this view. When the Dining Hall was extended in the 1950s, a Tutors' Common Room with views out to the Vatican Lawn was added in.

Later known as the Senior Common Room, it would have a variety of uses, ending its days as the Director of Advancement's office.

It was demolished in 2012 to make way for ... new toilets behind the Hall! 😳

We're welcoming residential students back this week, gearing up for a bumper second semester!

And not far off, the College Ball. Will it live up to the high standards set by the team of 1994?

17/07/2017

If you're about College in the next few weeks, this is certainly a great exhibition to take in!

Full House!

We had a fantastic opening of John Kelly's exhibition, 'Beyond Woop Woop', in recent weeks! An engaging presentation by John and an audience eager to see these great paintings.

And you can too!

The Professor Sir Joseph Burke Gallery in the new Gateway Building is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am-4pm, or otherwise by prior arrangement.

John has generously made a limited number of original etchings and prints available - so come in and grab your own little 'slice of ice'.

It's International Take Your Dog to Work Day today!!

This pic, taken in 1947, probably shows one of the College's former 'characters' - a guy who would wander in most Sunday mornings with his dog and pontificate to any interested (or not so interested!) students on a range of subjects from under the Oak.

Well, it takes all sorts to get a well-rounded education!

We have a fantastic evening lined up tomorrow for the opening of John Kelly's exhibition 'Beyond Woop Woop'!

Join us in the Gateway Building at 6.30pm for drinks and insights from John about his experiences of painting 'en plein air' in Antarctica, before we officially open the exhibition.

Big thanks to our friends at Australian Galleries who represent John's work and helped us in the preparation of this great exhibition.

Trinity College invites you to the opening of our next captivating exhibition:
'Beyond Woop Woop:
John Kelly’s Antarctic Paintings'
This collection exhibits sketches and paintings by acclaimed artist who spent three months as artist-in-residence in Antarctica, the harshest and most remote place on Earth.
John will regale us with stories from his adventures in the Antarctic and discuss the complexity of capturing the beauty and majesty of ice through paint
Thursday 22 June, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Location: The Craig Auditorium, the Gateway building, Trinity College, 100 Royal Parade, Parkville VIC
Collection exhibited in The Professor Sir Joseph Burke Gallery.

Been to Woop Woop? Now go beyond...

We're busy preparing The Professor Sir Joseph Burke Gallery for the next exciting exhibition! A fantastic collection of paintings by John Kelly, artist-in-residence with the Australian Antarctic Division in 2013.

Opening night is next Thursday, 22 June, from 6.30 with a presentation by John at 7pm. Should be a great evening, and all welcome!!

Lads looking swank, c. 1876.

The entire student body posing with newly appointed Doc Alex Leeper, seated left. He was only a few months shy of turning 28 when he commenced that year as the inaugural College Principal, amended in 1881 to become the first Warden.

He retired in 1918; 42 years later.

A great bit of Trinity from 'yesterday' arrived in a well-padded bag this week - the winning cup from the 1954 Juttoddie!

Barry Johnson (TC 1954) won the famed race in his fresher year, with a handicap of one brick in the heats and a brick and half in the finals. He was presented the pewter tankard the following day, after it had been engraved.

'I hurdled all the way around [the Bulpadock]', he recalls in a note that accompanied the cup, 'but I remember fighting off the "heavies"!'

For those not familiar with the concept, a gang of 'heavies' would hide out of sight on the south side of the Chapel with the intent to ...um, 'disrupt' the lead runner in order to work the odds in the betting that used to accompany the race.

We're not sure which was more fearsome - the prospect of a shinning on the wooden railing fence around the Bulpadock, loaded down with bricks ... or an encounter with the 'heavies'.

Swot vac. That time of years again falls upon the College, and a gentle hush descends upon the Dining Hall.

It's quite a community feel in there. Not so long ago, your fellow Trinitarians would study in the not-altogether-generous environs of the infamous Jeopardy 'dog boxes'; rooms not much bigger than ... well, yeah.

We've removed a few walls over the years and Jeop looks a whole lot better for it. Still, can't beat the Dining Hall for a bit of camaraderie.

Study hard, study well - and take breaks!

The difference twenty years makes!

Two great aerial photos of the University and Colleges, the first a rather spartan campus in 1923, and the other taken in September 1942.

The rows of Australian Army tents over the road in Royal Park clearly visible; but did you also know that the Royal Australian Air Force were billeted out at Trinity?

They moved in in 1942, first taking over Bishops' and the now long-gone Wooden Wing. But soon afterwards, Clarke was given over to the RAAF as well, leaving just Behan to accomodate the College students throughout the war years.

A wonderfully important and moving dinner in the Dining Hall at Trinity last night, recognising the the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.

This Sunday, the National Gallery of Victoria is holding a free event looking at how Aboriginal artists have challenged and responded to this legacy.

In 1967, Australians voted to remove clauses in the Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On the 50th anniversary of that historic referendum, learn how Aboriginal artists have challenged and responded to this legacy. Sun 28 May, 11am at NGV Australia: http://bit.ly/2qOOGfS

A small box of great lapel pins came our way from an alumna this morning, a visual reminder of the era of social change across the 1960s and 70s when these sorts of badges were almost 'de rigueur'.

Who could forget the Trinity Trolley Ball of July 1979, held in the Melbourne Town Hall, no less!

For almost thirty years, the Andrew Sprague student photographer has been documenting a year in the residential college and providing an album of 100 curated images to the Archives.

As time marches on, they become an wonderful record of the many familiar faces, activities and life of Trinitarians.

But we're missing a few! Our last was Kane Lo's fantastic photobook of 2013. Sprague Photographers of recent years, can you help us plug the gaps?
