📖 Everything You Need to Know for Planning a Tinny Trip down the Murray 📖
⛽ Fuel ⛽
Largest sections without fuel are:
- 191kms Wentworth to Customs House (Vic/SA border). Call or email Customs House before going to check they can give you fuel. Take cash.
- 175km Euston to Nangiloc (general store)
🚶♂️➡️For many towns,it can be 1km or so walk to the servo to get fuel. Taking a folding trolley can be useful.
In my 25hp two stroke at full throttle , i used 82L to go 190kms. Modern 4 strokes can use a lot less.
⛺ Camping & Accommodation ⛺
There is amazing remote camping along the way. For a lot of the way there are options to pull up wherever you like and camp for free. Some national parks charge a small fee, you can book and pay for these online when you get to them.
🛏️ There are also towns with caravan parks along the river and motels, etc.
📞 Communications ☎️
Phone service is patchy at times, Telstra offers the best coverage. There is a section 20km either side of lock 8 with no service. If travelling alone take a PLB (satellite personal locator beacon for emergencies, they are about $300 at BCF et,) .
🗺️ Maps 🗺️
The Spatial Vision Access Guides on the Avenza Maps app are great for showing where public land is you can free camp on. Also great for seeing points of interest and navigation points.
Navionics is good for navigating and calculating distances between points on the river.
☀️ Time of Year to Go ☀️
Best time of year.
Summer: Great for swimming. Fire bans apply. Can be very hot
Spring & Autumn: Good compromise of weather. In Autumn the water is a bit warmer coming off summer.
Winter: Great for glassy water, foggy mornings and fires. This area is renowned by clear sunny days eve, in winter. Can be a bit cold on the water. Good for having the river to yourself you won’t see many other people. More risk of low water levels.

The top gear, grand tour guys and hamish and andy should not have all the fun. Even though you’re not on TV you can still have one of these adventures (or even better)
The murray is an epic place to explore
Adventure is not dead even though everest has been climbed; there is still exploring to be done in the modern age
Mission based adventures are the best - where you need to get from point a to point B and 6 some problems along the way
And doing this that not many people do (ie going in a tinny down a murray for 7 days) is an epic way to spend a week off work
If you take a week off work you should come back with some epic stories to tell
You’re boring if you spend a weeks holidays sitting by the resorts pool
The tinny is the perfect vehicle to go exploring in. It’s small, slightly uncomfortable, easy to drive (, open to the elements and close to the outdoors). Easy to park up on the river bank
Guided tours are for children. You’re an adult with a lineage of a million years or your ancestors making stone aces and fires, surely you can figure out where to camp and how to make a fire on your own
Proper camping is when you can choose where you want to camp and not be in a 3x3m box at a caravan park
Signing up to do this crazy thing is a surefire way to meet other legends as crazy and fun as yourself
