There are few that truly capture the charm and character of these vessels - Neil McCarthy Photography is one of these rare few! His images of not only our vessels, but paddle boats all along the Murray (& Lakes) are truly stunning!

Today the Paddle Vessel Rothbury is coming out of the water on the slipway for maintenance and Survey.

Essentially this is similar to your car having a roadworthy and service - just with a lot more complicated processes and a very niche field of expertise!

Firstly, the slipway “trestles” are lowered into the river (on rails). The boat is driven onto these trestles. Then very slowly the trestles are pulled out of the river with the boat sitting on top. These vessels are flat bottomed, so they simply sit on these, with their weight holding them in place.

The next steps involve pressure washing the hull to remove algae etc so we can get a clear view of the planks. The team of shipwrights then inspect the planks to see which need to be replaced. They are removed, replaced, and then caulked to make it watertight.

During this whole process the Maritime Surveyors also inspect the vessel to make sure it is compliant (like your cars roadworthy). If yes, continue with works then put her back in the river, if no, we get a list of things needing work to make her compliant and work until it is done!

Other jobs get completed at this time too, including painting, other repairs and works and essentially cosmetics!

Coming off of the slip is the previous process reversed - the trestles lower the boat back into the water - very slowly until she is buoyant enough to float off. Then she is secured to the riverbank while the trestles are removed from the river and out the way.

We have a very busy few months ahead, with all three of our vessels due for this process. The P.V Rothbury and P.S Melbourne need to come out in winter - as they are wooden hulled, whereas the Mundoo is steel hulled and will come out in spring/summer.

The P.B Mundoo is operating in place of the P.V Rothbury at the moment and we will endeavour to provide cruises in some way or another!

Thanks to our amazing support team making this possible &

Welcome aboard THE VINELANDER Slow Rail Journey tourist train to Mildura.

If you’re booked to travel with us on THE VINELANDER, we can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to this epic Slow Rail Journey.

We’re returning to Mildura with a heritage passenger train, showcasing the very best of the Mallee region to guests who have booked for not only Victoria, but interstate and all over the world. Welcome to the start of your journey, Melbourne!

If you’re staying at the Savoy Hotel tonight ahead of our departure, please check in today with our volunteers at the Savoy. We’re in attendance now, through until 7pm and early check in will make your breakfast experience tomorrow morning more relaxing.

Guests joining tomorrow morning can check in at The Savoy hotel between 6.30am and 7.45am where you’ll enjoy breakfast before joining THE VINELANDER to Mildura.

While this Slow Rail Journey is fully booked out, we have opened up a very limited number of no-frills fares for one-way only travel between Melbourne and Mildura or Mildura to Melbourne. These no frills rail-only fares can be found by visiting:
https://bookings.slowrailjourneys.com.au/events/sevenosevenoperationsinc/1000974

Due to the popular demand for this Slow Rail journey tourist train to Mildura, we earlier announced another visit later this year, for all information and bookings please visit:
https://www.slowrailjourneys.com.au/post/15-20-august-take-the-path-less-travelled-on-the-sunraysia-exploring-mildura-murrayville-the-mur

It’s been many years since Mildura has seen a passenger service arrive: if your planning to view THE VINELANDER tourist train as it makes its journey in either direction please remember that the railway reserve is not open access, you should only view the train from an authorised location such as a station platform or a public level crossing. Trespassers on the railway reserve only make running heritage trains, such as as THE VINELANDER difficult in the future.

We hope you enjoyed the your journey on THE VINELANDER to Mildura.

⚓ We recently welcomed a group of Mildura West Primary School students to Mildura Weir.

Arriving on the Mildura Paddle Steamers' Paddle Vessel Rothbury, students had the opportunity to explore Lock 11 which enables water way traffic to travel through the different water levels in the mighty Murray River.

The first paddle steamer passed through the completed lock on 2 August 1927.

The lock is the only one in Australia that the public are allowed to walk across.

Our Mildura staff enjoyed the opportunity to share their knowledge with the school kids and it was an enjoyable day for everyone!

Welcome to Mildura Paddle Steamers

Mildura Paddle Steamers was established in 1955 by Captain Alby Pointon and his wife Freda, when he purchased a small launch in Mildura, called the “Donald Duck”. In 1957 Alby purchased an old Paddle Steamer wreck the “Mayflower” and rebuilt her to carry passengers. The Mayflower became too small and after searching along the river, he purchased the Paddle Steamer Melbourne also as a wreck, in 1965. He then restored her to the magnificent Paddle Steamer she is today. The Rothbury was then purchased in 1968 and underwent a lengthy restoration by Captain Pointon, a total of 8 years. During the 1970’s the Coonawarra was acquired along with other partners, and was operated at Murray Bridge in S.A. after extensive refurbishing. Eventually Alby brought the Coonawarra also, back to Mildura in 1981, but she was later sold due to health reasons. In 1999, Captain Alby Pointon and Freda bought their final boat to Mildura, the Paddle Boat Mundoo. She is the designated function vessel that caters for Weddings, Functions and Conferences. With his unique foresight Captain Alby Pointon has rebuilt three Paddle Steamers and brought others to Mildura. The Pointon family have operated river cruises in Mildura for over 64 years, with the Management being handed on to their children and grandchildren.
