Arguably our pride and joy - one of our original hand composition benches. 🍺
At least 70-ish years of age - possibly more - we’re not entirely sure of its origin (we’ve had comments from locals-in-the-know that it may have come from Sunraysia Daily’s press room, but there’s no true way of knowing) - what we can tell you is that it’s been a Park Douglas staple in the 30-something year lifespans of its current owners.
This bench was originally used for hand-composing letterpress type - a print method known as the industry standard until the 1970s, now reserved for the niche & boutique.
Once letterpress gave way to more modern techniques, this bench retired to the quite grubby task of hand-washing the ink from offset printing plates after a print run. This helped develop a “patina” of sorts (if you can call a layered mix of printing ink, water, and various cleaning products a “patina”), and quietly blended in with the rest of the press room, dark and dusty.
As times change, so do the tools we use - just as the table had outgrown its original intended purpose, it found itself a relic of a quickly changing press room, more suited to an antiques shop than an industrial outfit.
Luckily the original timber & steel were able to rise to the challenge of restoration, and when lovingly & painstakingly restored by Max & Chris for our front office earlier this year, revealed wear, dents and marks from many years of use, each telling a story about its long and colourful life in print.
It now takes up centre space in Park Douglas HQ - a meeting space to talk paper, colour and more.
(Sources say the steel top shines brightest with a beer or two on top, however we’re unable to confirm or deny at time of writing).
For reference, photos #4 & 5 - the bench in earlier days.
And in photo #6 - a shot of our offices in June 2020.

We've had the incredible privilege of working with David Neitz and the team at Brewmanity - and with Big Freeze 9 just around the corner, there are two things that we cannot stress enough:
1. With over $275,000 raised for Fight MND, these guys have made an incredible impact for a good cause, and
2. Their beer is bloody good, too. 🍺

While reports of a cunning, red-nosed cockatoo dropping cans of craft beer on well-behaved girls & boys (of drinking age) might be unconfirmed at this stage...
..what we can confirm is - that this has been an incredibly huge year to boot!
Before we harp on, we'll let you all know that our offices will remain open until this Friday the 23rd December, and will close until Monday 9th January 2023.
We'll do our best to fulfil any and all current approved orders from 2022 right up until Friday - any newly placed orders will be on the list for 2023. (For any extra info on this, please feel free to drop a line to [email protected]).
And now, to squawk a bit of praise - we'd like to thank you all who make it happen - our brilliant clientele who keep our presses turning with ink-dots of creativity; the marvellous suppliers who bend over backwards to keep us fuelled with paper, ink, and so much more;..and of course our spectacular team, a group of very passionate, professional and hard-working humans who we are proud to work alongside every day.
2022 has seen us grow beyond belief. A larger premises, a brand-spanking in-house Roll Label Printing division, upgraded presses and equipment, and plenty more to come. We look forward to keeping that momentum in 2023 while remaining true to our roots as your trusty local printer.
We hope you all have a happy, healthy and enjoyable break with family & friends - we'll catch you again in '23.
- Chris & Nick, on behalf of Team PDP

In the mid-1980s, Park Douglas Printing founder Shane Smith took a business trip to Sydney, where he was approached by the manager of an RSL and asked, "do you print drink coasters?"
"We've never done it before", Shane responded. "But we'll give it a crack."
Fast forward 35 years and Park Douglas is one of Australia's biggest Coaster printers, processing millions annually to clients of all shapes and sizes - both locally and nationwide.
We carry that same "can do" attitude with us through every sheet of paper we print.
We’re also proud commercial printers for “practically anything on Paper” - from Corporate Stationery - Business Cards, Envelopes, Letterheads, Invoice Books, Legal Pads, Labels - to specialty items in the Pub & Club Industry - Temporary Sign-In Slips, Menus, Poker Machine Payout Books, Order Pads, and more.
We’re not a mega-corporation with a focus on buzzwords & sales targets - we’re a family owned business built on passion & hard work. Ink’s in our blood.
We pride ourselves on printing coasters for some of Australia’s biggest Hotel & Hospitality Groups, while also supplying the RSL or Bowls Clubs that are still the heart of rural & suburban Australia.
Print is our Passion. That’s not just a slogan - it’s a way of life.
