Our Story

A stylishly renovated 1890s homestead, Nattai Lodge is set on a picturesque one acre of landscaped gardens in Mittagong. Escape the city for a weekend and relax in the highlands. Sleep in, and enjoy your morning brew in the sun under the front veranda. Stroll through the tranquil garden, taking in the fresh highlands air and native flora and fauna. Cook up a feast in the large, modern kitchen then curl up with a book in front of the fires. Or experience the natural beauty of the southern highlands while bush walking or cycling the reserves and national parks, or visit the local wineries, antique stores and museums. Nattai is not just the name of our beautiful house, it's also the name of a local river, national park, and the shire in which its located. Mittagong Municipal Council was gazetted on 24 July 1889. The land surrounding Mittagong was formed into Nattai Shire in 1906 and on 5 December of 1906, the first Nattai Shire meeting was held. Mittagong Municipality amalgamated with Nattai Shire on 1 January 1939, with the Nattai Shire changing it’s name in March 1949 to Mittagong Shire. On 1 January 1981, an amalgamation of three local government areas that made up the Southern Highlands; Mittagong Shire Council, Bowral Municipality Council and former Wingecarribee Shire (based in Moss Vale), formed the Wingecarribee Shire Council.

The Nattai River rises on the Mittagong Range within the Great Dividing Range, south of Mittagong, and flows generally north northwest and then north northeast, joined by nine tributaries including the Little River, before reaching its confluence with the Wollondilly River within Lake Burragorang southwest of the locality of Nattai. The river descends 336 metres over its 51-kilometre course. The river flows through the Nattai National Park and is a source of water for the Sydney region.

The Nattai National Park is a protected national park that is located in the Macarthur and Southern Highlands regions of New South Wales. 121,040-acres, it is situated approximately 150 kms southwest of the Sydney CBD and primarily encompasses the valley of the Nattai River, which is surrounded by spectacular sandstone cliffs. The park is covered in dry sclerophyll (hard leafed) forest - mostly eucalypt, and has fairly frequent forest fires. It is largely an untouched wilderness despite its proximity to Sydney. It is one of the eight protected areas that, in 2000, were inscribed to form part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. The Nattai National Park is the most southern of the eight protected areas within the World Heritage Site. The national park forms part of the Great Dividing Range.
