Ngununggula has reopened after the Christmas break. This magical time before the New Year where everything slows down is the perfect time to catch the Archibald Prize 2024 touring exhibition and explore the details in this year’s finalist works.

This carved and painted woodblock depicts artist Margaret Ackland, herself a four-time Archibald finalist in the 1980s, in her Sydney studio, surrounded by her sumptuous watercolour paintings. Painted by first-time Archie finalist Kean Onn See, the work’s textures emerge on closer viewing – swipe across to see.

And while you're there, pop over to Salon des Refusés, a short walk away at The White Cottage Gallery in the grounds of Retford Park - National Trust NSW. Both exhibitions are on until 27 January 2025.

We wish Sally all the best in this new chapter of her life and can't wait to support the new owners of Mount Ashby Estate! Here's Sally's statement:

Dear valued patron, friend and community…

The rumours are true…Mount Ashby Estate has been sold. As I prepare to say goodbye today, my heart is filled with immense gratitude for the incredible Southern Highlands community and the loyal supporters who have stood by us throughout the years.

While this marks the end of a chapter for me, it’s certainly not the end of the Mount Ashby Estate story. The estate (as of tomorrow) is in the hands of wonderful new owners who are eager to continue its legacy in their own unique way. Stay tuned—there’s more to come from them soon!

Mount Ashby Estate has been so much more than just a restaurant, showroom, and cellar door. It was a dream that my late husband, Chris, and I envisioned together—brought to life through passion, dedication, and our deep love for this remarkable region.

Chris and I imagined Mount Ashby Estate as a place where people could come together to savour French cuisine, fine wines, warm company, and the natural beauty of the Highlands. Thanks to your unwavering support and belief in our vision, that dream became a reality.

I also want to take a moment to honour the extraordinary team who have been the heart and soul of Mount Ashby Estate. Their unwavering commitment—not only to the business but also to me personally—has been nothing short of inspiring. I couldn’t have done it without them, and I will truly miss working alongside them at La Palette Restaurant.

While stepping away from the estate is bittersweet, I’m not saying goodbye to this wonderful community. I’ll be staying here in the Southern Highlands, continuing to be part of this vibrant and supportive region that has given me so much.

I leave Mount Ashby with a heart brimming with fond memories and deep gratitude for every connection, every laugh, and every shared moment we’ve had here.

Thank you for embracing Mount Ashby Estate and for supporting the dream that Chris and I held so dearly.

Salon des Refusés is coming to the Southern Highlands this summer with a stunning exhibition at The White Cottage Gallery in the grounds of Retford Park - National Trust NSW.

A highly-anticipated feature of the art scene, Salon des Refusés showcases alternative Archibald Prize entries not selected for the official exhibition in an equally outstanding display. And in exciting news, this exhibition will be running at the same time the Archibald Prize is happening at Ngununggula Southern Highlands Regional Gallery.

The galleries are just a hop, skip and jump away from each other so they've teamed up to offer art lovers the chance to see both exhibitions with a special ART PASS. Single exhibition tickets are also available.
