DIY Japanese Joinery

DIY Japanese Joinery Japanese Joinery is a traditional technique to connect timbers. Hi, my name is Hisao Zen, the creator and author of this site.

I created this website for enthusiastic woodworking beginners to learn the methods and techniques of the art of Japanese Joinery. On this website, you will find many tips and hints that you can use for your own projects. Including the most basic of basics, such as the characteristics of the wood, how to read timber grain and how to mark out the stocks. I will also share how to take care of trad

itional Japanese carpentry tools, and the details of various joints. There are plenty of pictures, illustrations, movies, plans, and templates with each project. After reading the information on this site, try putting the lessons into practice, and in the process, experience the knowledge and excellence of those who have developed these techniques. The potential to create beautiful art lies in your hands!

Besides you want to make sure to skew your plane when planing knots to reduce the resistance. You should avoid fighting against knots. If you dare, your blade is highly likely to chip. And for the same reason of reducing resistance, you want to slice the stock as thin as possible. To achieve this the sole of your plane should be carefully conditioned.

How to tell the top and bottom of a timber?

In Japanese joinery, we make sure that timber boards are used as they occurred in nature as trees. For instance, while building a house, we always use the posts facing the right way up.

But how can you tell which end is the top and which is the bottom?

Note: In fact, the back must be flattened before the portion is completely gone.

This rule applies not only to door frames, but to all mortise and tenon joints. “Don't cut down the female piece before assembly”

"Nagadai" is a plane dedicated to squaring up and straightening the edge of boards, therefore needs to be tuned with 4 contact points.

The side which goes down when planing is made thicker than the other side, so it can be repeatedly fixed back to the right angle if the plane body becomes out of square.
