Flyfishdownunder Flyfishing Australia and New Zealand. It doesn't get any better than this!

Australia extends from the tropical north of Cape York and the Northern Territory through to Tasmania in the south. Then it’s a short way over the Tasman Sea (the Ditch) to the world’s best trout fishery. There is so much to do down under, and our aim is to make sure that you make the best of your available fishing time. Many visitors to Australia travel to the high profile tourist areas of Sydney

and Cairns (the Great Barrier Reef) but in doing so often miss out on some fabulous Aussie experiences (we do however have some great contacts in those locations for those of you who don’t have the time to travel elsewhere). For those who have time and a sense of adventure, there is more to Australia than those two regions and we hope you will ask us to provide some alternatives to make your trip down under an experience to remember for the rest of your life. In fact it’s most important that you plan your fly fishing well before traveling down under as it is such a vast country with a diverse fishing environment. We are here to help with as much personalised advice as you need to make the most of your trip so ask away as there is no obligation.

Dee Lagoon was, as ever, a beautiful place to camp. Right on the canal flowing out. The Lagoon was quiet but the flowing water produced some very nice Rainbows and some Browns. All very healthy. We were there for a week all by ourselves apart from some day trippers. It was still warm!

We have been on a journey around Tasmania. Waters fished so far:

South Riana
Sth Esk
Lake Kara
Lake Rosebery
Pine Tier Lagoon
Talbots Lagoon
Bronte Lagoon
Double Lagoon and other of the Western Lakes
Cameron's Lagoon
Little Pine Lagoon
Arthur's Lake
Dee Lagoon

It's been interesting weather wise, we left heatwave conditions in Queensland and its been very windy and warm down here. We even had a heatwave warning..Tassie style. Waters temperatures initially around 21 - 23 c.

Consequently the fishing has been tough.

We are now planning Lake Leake over Easter, it hasn't been fishing that well but there has been a weather change.

As always a great trip so far.

A month in Tassie and so different.. like the rest of Australia it's been hot! Currently at Miena and a heatwave forecast!!!! Of course this has effected the fishing as in some cases (Rosebury, Sth Riana, Kara) water temp has been around 23 c. Keep this up and we might switch tactics to target Barra 😉

Arthurs Lake a bit better with 10 fish over our time there, but nothing to brag about.

Heading out to the Western Lakes tomorrow.

"No Letting the Old Man In!"
That's the response the admired nonagenarian actor Clint Eastwood gave to country singer Toby Keith when asked about his secret to staying active and vibrant at his age.
"Every day when I wake up, I don't let the old man in. My secret has been the same since 1959: staying busy. I never let the old man into the house. I've had to drag him out because he was already comfortably settled, bothering me all the time, leaving no space for anything other than nostalgia. You have to stay active, alive, happy, strong, and capable. It's in us, in our intelligence, attitude, and mentality. We are young, regardless of our ID. We must learn to fight to not let the old man in.
That old man awaits us, stationed and tired by the side of the road to discourage us. I don't let the old, critical, hostile, envious spirit in—the one that scrutinizes our past to tie us up with complaints and distant anxieties, or relived traumas and waves of pain.
You have to turn your back on the old murmurer, full of rage and complaints, lacking courage, denying himself that old age can be creative, determined, and full of light and projection.
Aging can be pleasant and even fun if you know how to use your time if you're satisfied with what you've achieved, and if you still maintain enthusiasm," adds Clint Eastwood, a legend with ten Oscar nominations, of which he has won four statues—all after crossing the threshold of sixty. That's called "not letting the old man into the house."
These words resonated so deeply with country singer Toby Keith that they inspired him to compose the song "Don’t Let the Old Man In," dedicated to the legendary actor.

Time rolls on and as our annual Tassie adventure gets closer. A couple of changes already, Geelong instead of the Melbourne port dash should be a vast improvement when embarking on the Spirit. Then there is a change of focus to the north east as our Tassie mates move north from St Helens.

We hear that river fishing opportunities have increased and other new locations a possibility.

Then there is catching up with club members, being a remote member is often frustrating seeing all the great activities undertaken.

Our last trip was to Eucumbene last April where we were faced with high water end of season flyfishing. It was quite spectacular... maybe Tassies time to shine as reports are positive.

A short 3 weeks in Kosciuszko has raised a few questions that I thought might solicit some thoughts.

This relates to varying states of the fishery in mainland Australia, and Tasmania.

The Snowy Mountains. We completed two Feb/Mar trips a few years ago during drought. Fishing was difficult as expected. Eucumbene around 40% as expected. Rivers low and slow as was the fishing. The lakes equally demanding.

This year's trip after Easter with Eucumbene levels high around 65% and the spawning run already started. Apart from the obvious emphasis on the spawning rivers there was an abundance of quality fish throughout lakes.

Compare that to what appeared to be an unremarkable season in Tasmania. Now I know there will be contrary opinion. Yes there will be those who can catch fish in a bathtub but feedback has generally indicated a difficult season.

The common factor was high rainfall, rivers running high. Of course hydro and forestry have significant impact but generally speaking there is a lot of residual water this year.

Tassie feedback suggests that insect life appeared to have diminished. Maybe the high flow rivers had an effect on sub-structures?

Then there is fishery management. Discussing this with locals in Kosciuszko trended opinion that NSW Fisheries have implemented practices that align more with natural breeding cycles. It was interesting to hear that a months worth of fishing pressure on spawning runs were of no concern due to the "sheer volume of fish in the lakes".

So why are the two fisheries performing so differently? Some objective opinion sought.

Well the Snowy trip is unfortunately over and I can report that the fishing was outstanding
The Eucumbene River certainly gets a flogging this time of year as anglers target trophies. After watching this I chose to fish the river at its mouth for some incredible Browns and Rainbows. The fisheries team was at Denison when we left and the word is that the sheer numbers of fish entering the river outweighs the fishing pressure.
On a non fishing matter we stayed at the Buhladelah Bowls Club on the way home. Such a lovely community and we even played trivia (after Sue stole a reserved table). We actually managed an unchallenged last! And had the honour of a picture of their flying pig trophy. A fun end to a simply great flyfishing adventure.

Such a wonderful day on Lake Eucumbene and we finally cracked the code for the river fish. There are some monsters in there that will have to wait for tomorrow. Met another flyfisher across the river who scored some incredible Briwns, we both lost our share but you will see from the look on Tyler's face how good it was to come up tight. BTW check out Tyler's angling adventures on Instagram tyler.b_fishing

An interesting day today, we travelled a few km up the road to check out Denison Camp. More so what was happening in the river. The river is running well and holds noticeable numbers of big trout. We were planning on going back until a semi-trailer and bus collided on a bridge just west of Providence Portal. Apparently it is still not cleared 4 hours later. We parked up a track and walked a km back to our camp.

The video of the river shows some big fish on the run near the bush (sorry it was panned a bit quick).

After a great stay with family at Yamba we made it to Providence Portal on Lake Eucumbene. Water level up in the 60s makes the river look like the Lake. Fish rising freely. Only problem was ... my usually reliable 4hp Yammie wouldn't go. Worse still it spewed fuel from the carby. Tried to fix yesterday, called everyone looked for a mechanic...nothing but dripping fuel.

A new day today.. after confirming it was likely a stuck float I took a deep breath and took the carby off. Now if you knew about my mechanical skills many would be frightened.

Undeterred, I set about the task and with help from Sue and actually got it all reassembled without bits left over.

Then came the test... it worked a treat!

Yet to give it a solo test run. But now the river mouth where it seems fish are congregating is in reach.

Edit. Solo run seemed okay.
