Our last morning in Melbourne.
After breakfast we checked out of the Oakwood Premier and jumping in a taxi to the Melbourne Skydeck After a slight hiccup with the check-in time for our visit, we made our way up to the 88th floor.
Melbourne Skydeck is the southern hemisphere’s highest observation deck. The city comes to you when you take it all in from nearly 300 metres above the ground.
Several of our guests experienced The Edge. A world-first, the Edge suspends guests in a transparent glass cube that projects out from Melbourne Skydeck, leaving them suspended nearly 300 metres above the streets of Melbourne.
A couple of guests also took the opportunity to try the Skydeck Voyager.
The first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and largest of its kind in the world, the Melbourne Skydeck Voyager™ Theatre features 24 Positron Voyager virtual reality ‘pod’ chairs that take guests on an immersive 6D journey of discovery through 16 iconic Melbourne experiences.
We returned to the hotel to collect our bags and then transferred to the airport for our flight home.
Once back in Brisbane we were collected by our Pursers Coach for the return journey to the South Burnett.

Day 8
Today we had a free day to spend time in Melbourne.
We walked across the Seafarer Bridge and made our way onto Flinders Street to jump on the City Circle Tram. The City Circle Tram was first introduced for the convenience of travellers in Melbourne. The tram runs along the city CBD circuit that covers all major Melbourne attractions. Passengers are welcome to hop on and off at any of the stops along the route. The tram has free commentary that give an overview of the historic landmarks and their significance to the city of Melbourne.
We got off the tram at Russell Street and headed to the Old Melbourne Gaol. The Old Melbourne Gaol was a former jail and is currently a museum. Construction on the prison started in 1839. It operated as a prison from 1845 and 1924. It held and executed some of Australia’s most notorious criminals, including the bushranger Ned Kelly. In total 133 people were executed by hanging. The goal formally ceased operations as a prison in 1924. The museum displays information and memorabilia of the prisoners and staff including the death masks of the executed criminals.
Back on the tram and next stop the Melbourne Museum.
We walked through the Carlton Gardens and past the Royal Exhibition Building on route to the Museum. The museum showcases everything about Victoria including its natural environment, cultural history, local communities and urban growth. The museum has several galleries including Melbourne Gallery which tells the story of the Melbourne from the early 19th century through to the present day. It includes the mounted hide of champion racehorse Phar Lap. The Mind and Body Gallery which is about the human body. The Forest Gallery which is a living temperate Victorian forest environment complete with live birds, reptiles and other fauna. The Science and Life Gallery which has bugs, dinosaurs, fossils, animals and human biology.
After a couple of hours wandering the museum, we jumped back on the City Circle tram to head back to our accommodation. Several of the group also decided to make a stop at Sealife Aquarium on their way back.
Our final dinner together was at Fivth Restaurant at our hotel.

Day 7
Today is the today that we travel the Great Ocean Road. Following a lovely breakfast at the Beach Kiosk, we started our journey along the Australian National Heritage listed 243 kilometre stretch of road. The Great Ocean Road, officially starts at Torquay and travels westward to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool, the largest city along the road. Our journey today took us in reverse – Warrnambool to Torquay.
The road was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932, and is the world’s largest war memorial; dedicated to casualties of World War I.
It is an important tourist attraction in the region, which winds through varying terrain alongside the coast, and provides access to several prominent landmarks; including the nationally significant Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations, London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge and the Razorback. At the official start of the road, The Memorial Arch tells the story of the famous stretch of road.
The most amazing views were enjoyed by all travellers.
We stopped along the way in Apollo Bay for lunch. One more stop for chocolate at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie before making our way back into Melbourne across the Westgate Bridge.
We have returned to Oakwood Premier Melbourne for another couple of nights before we head home on Saturday.

Day 6
This morning, we left Ballarat making our way to Warrnambool. We passed by wind farms near Lismore, before stopping in Camperdown for morning tea. A two kilometre avenue of elms in the main street, an impressive clocktower and a stunning bluestone Post Office were just a few of the highlights in this regional town.
Making our way down the Princes Highway we arrived into Warrnambool. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was our stop for the afternoon. The museum is home to Australia’s richest collection of shipwreck artefacts from some of the 200 ships known to have been wrecked along this coast. From the everyday items of passengers to the famous Loch Ard Peacock statue valued at over $4 million, they all have a tale to tell. We were met by our guide Ellen who was in full period costume. She led us on a 40 minute very informative tour which included facts about the museum’s collection and life in the 19th century. We were able to stroll the cobblestoned streets and explore more than 40 buildings including a school, a fire station and even a blacksmith’s forge. At the top of the hill which gives the village its name travellers can climb the spiral staircase of the lighthouse to inspect the 80-pound cannon and observe amazing coastal views.
After the tour we were taken to the tearooms for a lovely lunch of freshly cut sandwiches and scones.
Once lunch was done, we were joined by a member of the Middle Island Penguin Project and one of the amazing Maremma guardian dogs that is ued to product the little penguins that live on Middle Island. In a world-first, Maremma dogs are trained and placed on Middle Island to protect the penguins from foxes during the breeding season. The Penguin Project has been a huge success using the Maremma guardian dogs for conservation and raising community awareness. Middle Island has been closed to the public since 2006 to protect the penguin colony.
Our accommodation for tonight was Lady Bay Resort.
Some of the group decided to return to Flagstaff Hill are dinner to watch the Tales of the Shipwreck Coast Light and Sound Show. After a lantern walk down to The Wharf Theatre, the story was told through projections onto a nine-metre water wall.

Day 5
Today we packed our bags and headed out of Melbourne for the next couple of days. As we headed out of the city we passed by the Port of Melbourne. The port operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As we made our way onto the Westgate Bridge we came across a protest where three lanes of traffic were blocked by a truck – this caused the traffic to be banked up for kilometres. Looking at the neverending lines of traffic, we all decided country living is the way to go.
Once out of the city boundaries, we travelled on the Western Freeway making our way towards Ballarat, we passed by large numbers of fruit orchards. As we approached Ballarat, our guide Michael gave us a history lesson on how Ballarat was founded on the discovery of gold. The area was first settled in 1838 by sheepherders and developed rapidly after the discovery of rich alluvial gold deposits in 1851.
Ballarat was also the location of the scene of the armed rebellion known as the Eureka Stockade, in which about 25 miners, demanding political reform and the abolition of licenses, were shot down by the military. The leader of the miners, Peter Lalor lost his arm in the rebellion. He later became a Victorian politician and is hailed as being the creator of the Australian Union Movement. He is celebrated with a statue in the centre of Ballarat.
Today we visited Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill is an open air museum that depicts Ballarat's first ten years after the discovery of gold there in 1851 and has become a nationally acclaimed tourist attraction.
Set in the Australian 1850s, the complex is located on a 25-hectare site that is linked to the richest alluvial gold rush in the world. The site comprises over 60 historically recreated buildings, with costumed staff and volunteers, who are able to answer questions and will pose for photos. The recreation is completed with antiques, artwork, books and papers, machinery, livestock and animals, carriages, and devices all appropriate to the era.
The second-largest gold nugget in the world was found in Ballarat in the Red Hill Mine which is recreated in Sovereign Hill. The Welcome Nugget weighed 69 kg and comprised 99.2% pure gold.
This afternoon we went from a drive around Ballarat. Firstly we did a loop around Lake Wendouree which was home of the rowing events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The lake is still used by rowing clubs today. Next was a quick drive around the Ballarat Old Cemetery which began in 1847 and includes names and memorials associated with the gold rush and the Eureka Rebellion. The cemetery also includes a section which is graves of the Chinese miners (single headstones) who made their way to Ballarat.
We arrived at the Botanical Gardens to find that the gates were closed. Preparations were underway for the Begonia Festival which takes place in Ballarat this coming weekend. We then took a walk around the foreshore of Lake Wendouree before heading to our hotel Quality Inn Heritage on Lydiard.

Day 4
Everyone got to have a rest morning ready for the big day ahead.
We headed out of the city which was probably a good plan as the ASEAN Summit which involved many world leaders is happening at the Convention Centre just around the corner from our hotel.
We headed back into the Dandenong Ranges today making our way to enjoy a ride onboard Puffing Billy. Built in 1900 to serve the local communities that live in the hills and carrying anything from passengers to time, the railway is now a major tourist attraction that allows visitors to experience the century old tradition thanks to the efforts of over 300 volunteers. The open side carriages allow passengers to sit with their legs dangling over the edges of the carriage. Today we travelled from Lakeside to Belgrave – about an hour’s journey.
After lunch we began our journey to Phillip Island. First stop was at Churchill Island. Churchill Island now has an important place in the history of European settlement in Victoria. Lt. James Grant disembarked from the Lady Nelson in 1801 and named the island after the man who had given him seeds that he planted, making Churchill Island the site of the first European garden in Victoria, including the first site where wheat was grown.
Since the 1850s this fertile 57 hectare island has been continuously farmed and in 1872 when Samuel Amess, former Mayor of Melbourne, purchased the island for both holiday and farming use, he built a substantial house and outbuildings. Other families on the island have included the Pickersgills and Rogers and buildings from these island inhabitants still stand today.
Next stop was at the Koala Conservation Reserve where we wandered along the treetop boardwalk and saw koalas up close in their natural habitat. With the aim of promoting koala conservation, this environmentally-minded attraction has been instrumental in saving Phillip Islands natural koala habitat which has seen the koalas in this area breed and grows in numbers.
Late afternoon we headed to The Nobby Centre. We took a walk along the boardwalks to take in the breathtaking coastal views. Overlooking Bass Strait, the Nobbies offer spectacular clifftop views. We then travelled the road along the cliffs to make our way to the Penguin Parade Centre.
Following dinner and once sunset was getting closer, we were ushered down to the Penguin Parade location to await the arrival of the small birds. Phillip Island is home to Australia’s largest colony of little penguins, with 40000 breeding penguins found on the Summerland Peninsula. The little penguin is the smallest of all penguins weighing around 1kg and is only 30cm in height. They are also the only penguin with blue and white feathers. As the sun went down the little birds started to emerge from the ocean and scampered across the beach up into the burrows that litter the sand dunes. As we walked back towards the Penguin Centre, we could see and hear the birds as they moved through the groundcover on the dunes. We then travelled back to Melbourne with a late night arrival to our accommodation.

Day 2
This morning after breakfast at Oakwood, we met our guide Michael who will be with us for the entire time that we explore Melbourne. Today we headed out into the Yarra Valley.
As we left the city precinct we travelled along Olympic Boulevard past Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Stadium and Olympic Park Oval. We passed through Yarra Glen before arriving for our first stop of the day, Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. The Chocolaterie is a feast for the senses with over 480 different chocolate products. Our group was taken through a chocolate tasting where they were given a selection of 12 different samples of the hand crafted chocolates.
A quick drive through Healesville before we made our way to Rochford Wines where our travellers were taken through a wine tasting, before we enjoyed a two course lunch.
This afternoon we made our way into the Dandenong Ranges before heading back to Melbourne. We stopped at Grants on Sherbrook and took a walk into the forest. A couple of our group were lucky enough to see lyrebirds which frequent the forest. We then stopped in the village of Sassafras for a quick wander. The village is well known for Mrs Marples Tea House. We headed back to Melbourne via the freeway before enjoying dinner at our accommodation at Oakwood.

Day 1
After a night’s accommodation at Ibis Brisbane Airport, our group boarded our plane to Melbourne.
On arrival we were transferred to our accommodation for the next three nights – Oakwood Premier Melbourne. An impressive hotel, with some impressive views to match.
For lunch we headed off to South Wharf. South Wharf has been transformed from a former decrepit wharf area into a tourism, hospitality, shopping and events precinct.
Early evening we walked along the Southbank Prominade and experienced the sights and sounds of Melbourne on a Friday evening. Our dinner tonight was onboard the Spirit of Melbourne Cruising Restaurant. Over a three hour cruise we enjoyed a 4-course menu. As we cruised the river we saw Melbourne City at night – the lights and colours reflecting on the Yarra were just amazing.
