Today's fun and informative fact from our foredeck spiel spinner Matt!

What are the origins of the name Nelson Bay you may ask? Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson was a great British hero, a warrior of the realm and his war ship, the HMS Victory, was and is a sight to behold!

But it's not named after him

Governor Lachlan Macquarie's personal brig, the Lady Nelson, was a very capable little ship and conjures up many similarities with Thomas Cochranes brig 'Speedy'. (Please check this guy out) . A brig is a two masted square rigged gaff sailing ship with the mizzen, or rear mast, higher than the main.

He was assisted in the naming efforts by his wife, Elizabeth, when they visited in 1811-12. But here's the fun part, the Lady Nelson was actually named after Nelson's famously cuckolded wife, his affair with Emma, Lady Hamilton, being well known and accepted by the British people. So, in a roundabout way, the connection between Horatio and Nelson bay does exist.

Regardless, it's still one of the most beautiful waterways in Australia!

Absolutely blown away. The quality of the images that the Port Stephens community has provided has truly made our collective day.

All of you should be truly proud of showcasing our beautiful region to this level. But of course with all competitions that can be only one winner. However we may have been so impressed that we have decided to provide a second and third prize as well. 'Hey all from pookakachu the jellyman turtle! I'm just having a rest in this bodacious bay to get my strength up bros, so keep an eye open for me as I'm reeeealy slow!'

Cheers turtle man, I'll pass that on for you! Heya everyone, we've got some big sea turtles resting in the bay at the moment, so please be aware!

The best thing we can do for all of our ocean mates on busy weekends is SLOW our water craft down, like 20-25 knots across the bay! Do it for the dolphys ;) 🐬

The annual Myall Classic Paddling Ultramarathon race will be happening again on the 17th September 2022, from Tea Gardens up the Myall River to Tamboy and return. It will attract around 250 competitors and spectators, and be based once again in Anzac Park. After two years of race cancellations, competitors are looking forward to a great weekend away in Tea Gardens sampling everything the region has to offer.
