During friday's 3:30pm whale watch we were treated to a pretty spectacular show by a mother, calf and female es**rt. We caught up with the group near Boondelbah Island as the es**rt and calf breached repetitively, as the afternoon went on, the animals alternated between pectoral slaps and tail lobs.

Guests onboard friday's 1:30pm whale watch were rewarded for their patience!
We started our search just past fingal, visiting a couple of pods travelling steadily south and spending little time on the surface. On the way home though, we caught sight of an active whale inshore of Boondelbah, so we doubled back to catch the action!

A few pics from Friday morning's 11am Whale Watch. We didn't have to travel far before we had our first sighting- a mother a calf on the entrance bar between Yacaaba and Tomaree headlands. After spending some time with the slow moving pair, we headed offshore to visit a couple of southbound pods. The groups were relaxed and focused on their travels, so we left them to catch up with a mother, calf and es**rt that were travelling between the islands- the calf was quite active, alternating between breaching, tail lobs and pectoral slaps as the trio weaved their way between the islands.

During sunday's whale watch cruises, we saw good numbers of southbound mothers and calves. The 'tail lob' was the move of the day. We saw this behaviour repeated by calves on all of the day's trips.
Like breaching, tail lobbing may be a means of communication for humpbacks, as the sound made as their bodies impact the water's surface can travel great distances. It may also be a means of dealing with any itches or discomforts, and in the case of younger animals, is probably important in helping them build and tone muscle.

During saturday morning's 9am and 11am cruises, we were rewarded for braving the strong westerly winds.
At 9am, we caught up with a mother, calf and es**rt that were tracking south. The calf was practicing its tail lobs.
Back out at 11am, and we barely made it past Tomaree headland before encountering our first whales. A couple of pairs of mothers and calves were sheltering between the islands. The calves were quite active; breaching, pectoral slapping and tail lobbing.

Celebrating World Animal Day 🐋🐬🦭🌍

The World Animal Day is celebrated every year on October 4th to align with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology and animals.

This year's theme, "The world is their home too," reminds us that all animals deserve respect as co-inhabitants of our planet.

We were all delighted, just 5 minutes into our 11am cruise yesterday to encounter a Mum and calf in the bay.

They calmly cruised past out towards Bay and the heads - with a bonus breach - before we even hit the humpback highway 😍❤️🙌🏼🐋 Thanks for joining us NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service & NBN Television

Weather conditions are looking great for weekend whale watching - be sure to book in advance - with low number passenger (14 pax) cruises, our tours can book out.

A long-nosed fur seal has made itself quite at home in the marina today… and people think we’re joking when we say that we don’t stop looking for wildlife until we’re tied up!
