One of Newcastle’s defining features is its busy harbour port. Our city is the biggest
exporter of coal in the world, however sharing the harbour with the coal ships are freight ships, cruise liners, fishing boats, ferries, and private vessels, which all make for a very unique scene which can be viewed from a very close proximity. Queens Wharf Brewery, or “The Brewery” as it is locally known, is located on the edge of Newcastle Harbour. With music, sunshine and huge ships passing by it is a great location for locals and tourists to visit. Lake Macquarie is twice as large as Sydney Harbour and is the largest permanent salt water lake in the southern hemisphere. On a daily basis, activities such as Fishing, Swimming, Sailing, and Water Skiing, are all in action on the lake. Pippi’s Hotel at Speers Point, and the Gunyah Hotel at Belmont, are both boutique hotels located on the shores of beautiful Lake Macquarie. Both hotels are only a short drive from the heart of Newcastle, and both have magnificent balconies overlooking the expanse of Lake Macquarie. There are few cities in the world beyond Newcastle that can say their city centre is surrounded by so many world class beaches, and there is definitely a wave of surfing culture that characterises the city. Merewether beach is one of Australia’s most famous surfing locations, the venue of the international Surfest surfing competition, and the location of the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere. It is home to four times World Surfing Champion, Mark Richards, and in 2009 was declared a National Surfing Reserve. At Merewether Surf House, scenic drinks can be enjoyed atop the venue’s picturesque deck. 3.15 – 3.45pm Travel from Lake Macquarie to Newcastle Coastline.

4.30 – 4.45pm Travel along coast back to City Centre.
