The lost years refers to approx 5 years from when turtles hatch and head out to sea before returning to the same beach they were born. That feeling when you arrive at a remote island community that have never received visitors from a cruise ship before. They were just as excited as we were! The traditional drums and dances were practised, the costumes made, a day off school. Our island hosts practised their English and the gorgeous shy but happy smiles were everywhere. As we arrived we found small brown hands in ours as our junior guides proudly showed us their schools and homes. We spent hours chatting about their lives as they were just as intrigued about ours. Friendships made, both our and their knowledge of the world expanded and happiness was everywhere. This mesmerizing tradition, held only during the full moon, serves as a sacred calling to the animal spirits, blessing newborns, honoring the departed, and marking the initiation of young men into adulthood.This ritual is no casual affair. For weeks, the initiated men disappear into the depths of the forest, fasting to purify their souls and crafting intricate masks and costumes to embody the spirits they seek to summon. As the ceremony begins, the rhythmic beat of drums fills the air, the men kick the fire urging the spirits to reveal themselves in the flickering flames.And then, it happens. A shimmering silhouette dances within the fire, a manifestation of the animal spirits’ presence. With renewed vigor, the men continue their dance, their movements intertwining with live snakes, a testament to their bravery and connection to the natural world.As the flames eventually fade, the ceremony concludes, but not before the men and uninitiated boys embark on a journey into the jungle with the snakes.
