~ Avenue of Honour - Jetty Road, Normanville ~
Established on May 13th 1915 and is believed to be the very first "Avenue of Honour" planted in Australia.
There are 4-6 large Moreton Bay Figs that remain from the original plantings along the southern side of the road. Slightly younger trees complete the Avenue which is over 500 metres long.
Dr. Michael Taffe in his PhD Thesis revealed that the Normanville trees formed the first WW1 war memorial Avenue in Australia.
"The trees used were Moreton Bay Figs that had been provided by and planted by Mr R.B. Clark and were 'intended to serve as a living monument to his gallantry'. Each tree has the soldier's name and details attached".
The next time you are driving or walking along Jetty Road take a minute to remember the fallen and Honour their sacrifice. Not only are they beautiful trees, they also have a beautiful story as to how the became to be.
We will remember them
