The city of Perth has its origins in 1829 when the Swan River Colony was established by the British Government. Perth formally attained ‘city’ status in 1856 when it was declared a Bishop’s See by Queen Victoria. The first meeting of the Perth City Council was held on 10 December 1858. It was not until the centenary of Foundation in 1929 that the position of Mayor was elevated to Lord Mayor. The C

ouncil met at a number of locations over the years, moving to its current home, Council House, in 1963. In 1994, the sprawling local government area was split into four separate authorities with the creation of the Towns of Vincent, Victoria Park and Cambridge. The City of Perth remained as the capital city of Western Australia.

Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. in the city this Australia Day at the Hancock Prospecting Australia Day Celebrations. ✨

From 3pm, Langley Park will host an array of vibrant entertainment, with fun for all ages and adrenaline levels. An awesome spectacle of fireworks and drones will light up Perth’s skyline and wow crowds from 8:30pm.💥

The Birak Concert will take place on Supreme Court Gardens with a jam-packed stage program showcasing local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent from 3pm to 7:30pm.

Get to know the race routes for the AusCycling Road National Championships ⚡

Northbridge will be buzzing with energy tomorrow when Australia's top cyclists hit the streets for the Criterium. The six-corner, 1.2km course has a mixture of wide boulevards and narrow side streets, creating a challenging yet dynamic environment with plenty of high-speed action.

Then, on Saturday and Sunday, riders will be put to the test in the Road Race: a 13.6km circuit which twists and turns through Kings Park before reaching the Swan River and the CBD. There won't be much chance to enjoy the scenery, with a punchy climb up William Street and Malcolm Street just 400 metres before the finish straight. This course sets the stage for a race that's truly anyone's to win.
