A morning appearance on Good Morning TX to start off the 38th Annual Grapefest: A Texas Wine Experience running from September 12th-15th.

“A barrel selection from the outstanding 2021 Barossan vintage, which turns out to be an equal blend of Old Garden Mourvèdre and Monopole Shiraz, both 1853-planted vines and 20 months in oak. It’s such a beautifully composed wine, a study into ancient vine texture and grace with intuitive winemaking simpatico with such an important resource. Pristine plummy fruits with red fruit top notes.

Harmonious and endlessly complex with layers of fine spice, pomegranate, sage, bay leaf, roasting meats, forest floor, mountain herbs, wildflowers, leather, cedar and earth. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains has been growing in Barossa Valley for 170 years, approximately the same age as our Old Fence Line block where this fruit is sourced.

Traditionally the varietal has been used to make dessert wines, however our Madame M Blanc & Blanc is a dry white blend of 77% Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and 33% Sauvignon Blanc - inspired by Dean and Lou’s travels along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain and southern Italy.

The scenario he described was probably no one’s idea of a winemaking operation—except his. Lacking capital at the time to buy or build a winery, and also just starting a family in Adelaide with his wife, Lou, he wanted to keep the business local. He settled on the idea to custom-crush—i.e. rent winery space to crush his wine grapes—but otherwise have complete, on-site control over the fermentation and barrel-aging of the Hewitson wines and their eventual distribution out to Australian and other markets. One way or another, it would require a facility of his own. “I was searching around for a place to work from, and I came upon this old milk factory,” he wrote in one of his emails. The building he remembered from childhood “was sort of like a dairy, but it sort of wasn’t because they didn’t milk the cows there. They brought all the milk from the dairy farms back to Adelaide.” A huge thanks to Tony Poer from Al Dente Wines for beautifully capturing our story.
