Large numbers of shield shrimp (Troips austraiensis) were recently recorded at Lake Littra, on the Chowilla Floodplain.

Shield shrimp are an ancient native crustacean found in temporary wetlands and pools.

They can have up to 60 legs which they use not only to propel themselves through water, but also to breathe!

Their eggs can lay dormant in the dry sand for years until a watering or rainfall event.

These fascinating creatures have emerged in response to the recent delivery of water for the environment to some of Chowilla's ephemeral wetlands.

DEW ecologists also recorded high numbers of freshwater glass shrimp (Paratya australiensis), brine shrimp (Parartenia sp.), mussel larvae, and several species of water beetle.

These macroinvertebrates play a vital role in the productivity of a wetland, providing food recourses for native fish and waterbird species.

The Paringa bridge lift span is operational once more.

When hiring our houseboats & wanting to go north (recommended), we will book the bridge opening for you. 😀

SA Infrastructure and Transport has now completed repair work on Paringa Bridge. The bridge lifting span is operational.

The bridge opening times are 9.30am and 2.30pm daily, 7 days per week (boat operators must call 0408 955 322 at least 2 hours before the opening).

Please check the clearance height on onsite boards before passing under the bridge. This may change depending on environmental factors, including wind and water flow.
