ᕙ( ︡'︡益'︠)ง A-FRAME vs LOFT💪(•︡益︠•). Who wins?

"More A-Frame" was what the client wanted. So we went back to the drawing board. Still geared up for Universal Accessibility and the same Solar Passive Design outcomes.

A client's feedback is so valuable. Things change and when they do we hope it is for the better. This was I think.

This was a huge project. The main residence consisted of 2 gable roof pavilions with a glazed breezeway connection between them. The design is split over multiple levels and we worked hard to ensure there was a good connection between the indoor & outdoor spaces throughout the site.

The lower pavilion includes a classic open plan living arrangement with a long raking ceiling with exposed composite metal & steel trusses. The family wanted the living & dining room to be somewhat shared so a large feature bench/table sits in the middle of this space, with the kitchen having a wrap behind scullery/pantry to hide all the mess away.

The second higher pavilion is accessed via a linking breezeway with full glass to either side looking into the gardens. The first floor of this pavilion host all the kid's bedrooms, plus the laundry and bathroom. Up the feature steel/timber staircase is the parent's retreat & the master bedroom suite.

At the rear of the site, there is a pool house/studio/guest bed /workshop with its own separate bathroom. An open vine-covered pergola has pride of place at the front of this and enjoys views back to the main residence over the lap pool and gardens.

A cheeky little video from 6️⃣ years ago. A great little project in South Freo. One of the first projects I ever modeled in 3D. Looking back now it stands in great contrast to the more refined 3D visualisation we offer today.

I ❤️ this space. It was a few years ago. But worth revisiting.

A modern extension that sits in comfortable contrast next to the original cottage. Standing out but, not out of place.
It reminds me why I love what I do, seeing images like this.
I create beautiful spaces!

Located in Greenmount, an unfinished home in a beautiful location left a blank canvas for a new family to breathe some fresh air into this project. The partially completed 3-storey home only made it to 1.5 storey's high before the owner builder building it ran out of steam. But we are turning a negative into a positive by keeping the existing ground floor with dramatic circular concrete stairs and the slab of an unbuilt storey over, and building something truly special in its place.

Solar Passive Designed & responsive to the existing building blocks. This nifty 3 bed / 2 Bath home lets the light in & takes advantage of the sun to the best effect.

It's been a joy to help the client to realise this new forever home, I love how it has come together.

A dynamic Scandi Barn building design was on the menu for my motivated & hand's-on clients in Roleystone. Their aspiration was for a small home for them and their son, which showed some Architectural flare, reflected their minimalist lifestyle, and reuse the bones of the existing condemned residence. Something that is them that they can Owner Build themselves.

Designed with SIP's construction in mind, we needed a simple overall form that used the Structural Insulated Panel's Black to best effect and would go together a bit like a stack of cards, be cheap, be heavily insulated and see the building reach the lock-up stage quickly. Externally it features dark standing seam cladding & double glazed windows, with hardwood cladding. The Street facing elevation features that bold Scandi Barn facade, with handcrafted made metal fascia, suspending the roof as it floats over the windows & walls below.

Internally we wanted to showcase the warm tones of the OSB board & timber and offset them with a much lighter internal feel. Just 2 Bed, 1 Bath, 1 WC, Small Office & Open Plan Living on the mid floor, flexible extra grow space in the mezzanine & Laundry downstairs. The Alfresco floats over the old building foundations & welcomes in the sunsets. Northern Veranda does its best to keep the sun & rain out.

I could say much more about this project but.....why!! I like it a lot, how about you?

What a location! Hidden in the pretty rural setting that is Hovea. Opposite a meandering stream with an almost perfect North orientation, we set out to make the best use of this beautiful location.

Another solar passive building design but this one is designed to downsize in style. This Ancillary Accommodation or Grand Flat is designed to accommodate full universal access throughout. The wheelchair-friendly design is for someone to claim their independence for many years to come.

The project is still in the Concept Design stages, we will let the images speak for themselves.

This charming new home design in the beating heart of Darlington has been designed to reflect the cottage farmhouse era of old, with a passive solar twist.

Our client purchased a not quite heritage listed home, circa 100 years old, with the aim of renovating the current home and restoring its most charming aspects. But.........along with its old age it has been patched up, added on to, sagged in spots & its youthful good looks have faded. After working to assess options to reinvigorate the home, it was agreed by all that we needed to start afresh.

We have kept the design in line with the traditional cottage style & kept the bits that really spoke to the client when they fell in love with the property and home.

Sustainability is a core driver for the outcomes we strive for on our projects and the challenge of creating something new/old & blending this with Passive Solar design principles was a welcome brief.

After designing a modern extension on this property a few years, I was delighted to be invited to assist in designing a new pool house & rumpus room for its new owners. We have added a new alfresco space that is well connected to the existing pool and a short stroll from the stacking entry doors from the existing home. We have retained the location of the existing retaining walls & steps to keep the existing garden intact, with the deck slightly elevated to give it a floating feel. The owners currently enjoy sitting in a narrow North-facing porch area and wanted to add a sitting space similar to this in the new works. The building has a modern feel that reflects the modernised feel of the existing cottage and its more recent extension at the front. The gardens that wrap around the building are featured inside as well with floor-to-ceiling glass and that deck just floating over the landscape. Thou the new building is designed for exercise and rumpus room uses it is also designed for flexibility, with a small kitchenette, powder room & storage room. A great little design project and one we are looking forward to seeing in construction.

A lovely new home design, for a young couple. Located on the Darling Scarp in Mount Nasura. Inspired by the client's vision for open living & modern styling with gable roof forms. A site like most in the hills spoilt with West & South facing views. We had to balance the location of glazing & living areas to make the most of these but also shield the home from the sun as it lowers to the horizon in the West. We have done this with shading devices, long picture frame slender windows at eye level & making use of those South facing views with expansive glazed gable form. The upstairs master bedroom suite has a studio apartment feel. Still in the Concept Stage with updates to come.

This new home is set to perch on top of the Brigadoon Hills overlooking Bells Rapids & is spoilt for views with a perhaps 270-degree view that includes Walyunga National Park, the Swan Valley, Perth City & up thru the Chittering Valley. Along with these natural assets it was also steep, had significant trees on the site that wanted to shield these views from the site. The building envelope was also a tricky element as it wanted the house to be on a long on the East-West axis, perfect for solar passive design but not forgetting those views in from the West as that would be the narrow face of the home. We also needed lots of space for a growing nuclear family with young adults & their partners intent on living it out at home for a bit longer. On top of that universal access needed to be accommodated for another family member. A bucket full of constraints.

In the end, we embraced the slope to sail above the natural tree lines, minimised tree removal, and limited tree removal to within the building footprint & only what was necessary to manage fire risks. This was enough to get clear views from the upper floor area. We also swung the main bedroom and ensuite around 45 degrees to give them direct-facing views of the city skyline, with cracker views from the shower & bath windows. To get the most of the Western views we located the living areas, games room & a quiet reading nook along this face. Also, the Alfresco was located on the West to take in the views and try and take out the heat of the setting sun in Summer. The upper floor contains all the accessible places needed for someone with limited mobility and the ground floor area will accommodate the young adults who have not yet left the nest. Why would they, it has its own shared living space and 2 bedrooms with separate vehicle parking, ensuites & deck areas. If and when the area is vacated it will be a perfect self-contained unit that can be leased for short-term accommodation and generate some extra income for the owner.

All up not a bad outcome and visually an impressive home to live in.

The dream is to build a “forever” home situated on a 3-acre natural bush block in Hovea, close to the John Forest National Park. The site is privately located in the trees on a battle-axe site with graded down views to the North & West, so a good long East-West axis home that faces North and takes advantage of these natural assets was the vision.

The client developed a clear vision and brief for their inspiration for the home & it is probably best interpreted using their own words;

"The house will be for myself and my partner, and our one son. An open plan kitchen + living + dining space would suit our lifestyle. I would like the space to be filled with natural light, as our current house is oriented incorrectly & is always dark. The elevation of the build is important to me. More than anything I want our new house to be aesthetically pleasing as I walk up to the front door. I like minimalism, modernism, and brutalism. I like a flat roof design. I like concrete, glass, black corrugated iron & recycled timber. I like polished aggregate floors, high ceilings & double-height spaces. I like clerestory windows & large panels of glazing that can be opened to let the outside in."

Currently, in the preliminary concept design stages & initial feedback due soon, I hope we have hit the spot, but anticipate improvements to this brave new home in Hovea.

Not quite heritage listed but of that era, circa 100 years old, this home in the heart of Darlington was recently purchased for all it's most charming cottage aspects. But.........along with its old age it has been patched up, added on to, sagged in spots & its youthful good looks have faded. We are working with a client who desires to make it beautiful, functional & more homely than it now is.

We have kept the design in line with the traditional cottage style & kept the bits that still spoke to that old-world charm. Not so open plan, big views to the South, good sized rooms throughout & those high ceilings you'd expect. We've retained the existing Wisteria trunk from the back balcony & we will reattach this to the vine-covered pergola at the rear. We love cottage designs & are pleased to have been involved in developing the concept thus far.

It's hard finding quality builders at the moment, given the stimulus-driven building activity in WA right now.

Bristoldawn Construction is a newish building company to the hills based in Darlington, we worked together on a modern home in Darlington a few years back. Amongst other jobs, they have now pulled off this great granny flat build in Darlington, (Not one of mine).

Look out for George from Bristoldawn, well worth considering them if you need a local builder coming up.
