Although we are in lockdown we can still enjoy learning about the wonders of East Gippsland for when we can return!

Dolphins: Frequently asked questions.
- The obvious species in Gippsland Lakes are Burrunan Dolphins. Other species including “Bottle Nosed” and “Common” live in the ocean.
- About 60 Burrunan Dolphins live in the Gippsland Lakes. This number may be be less over last 12 months.
- Dolphins are identified (research) by their dorsal fin.
- Dolphins give birth in Gippsland Lakes.
- Burrunan Dolphins also live in Port Phillip Bay, East coast of Tasmania, South Australia and wander around along Australian coastline.

Pelicans: Frequently asked questions.

Approx. 500 counted between Sale and Lake Tyers (Great Pelican Count).
Young Pelicans near full size at 3 months old, can fly at 4 months old.
Only 2 breeding locations (called a creche) in Victoria.
Approx 50 Pelicans have a red number leg band for research purposes.
There are 8 different species of Pelican in the world. Only one species in Australia.

They are magnificent birds and to watch them land on the water is magical!

At Waterloo we see Pelicans everyday!
