It's the island of love for Echidnas right now!

Keep an eye out for our spiky locals as they search for love while you journey around Kangaroo Island. Or swing by Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park and meet their local echidna pairing Snorkel and Spike!

https://www.kangarooislandvisitorcentre.com.au/experiences

Kangaroo Island Tourism South Australia South Australian Tourism Commission Tourism Industry Council South Australia - TICSA Kangaroo Island Visitor Information Centre Kangaroo Island Council Kangaroo Island

All aboard the Echidna Train!!! Our Kangaroo Island Echidna's are well into their breeding season so if you're visiting during this time be sure to keep your eyes out for the Echidna trains around KI. However, if you don't happen to spot any Echidnas in the wild, Snorkel and Spike are always happy to say hello on warmer days here at the KI Wildlife Park!

During breeding season Echidnas will form what's referred to as an "Echidna train" where multiple males will follow a single female in hopes that they will be the successful suitor.

During this time, and with the warmer weather of spring arriving, we see an increase in Echidna activity, including around the roads. Echidnas are fairly slow moving and can't get out of a cars way quickly, meaning we also see many patients coming in with car hit injuries around this time of year.

If you do happen to hit wildlife whilst visiting Kangaroo Island, please always stop and check the animal. We have several amazing wildlife organisations that can help if an animal is injured.

But most of all, enjoy seeing our big beautiful Kangaroo Island Echidnas! They certainly are a favourite amongst visitors.

Haaaaave you met... Grug!

One of the many amazing native birds you can see at Raptor Domain and a born and bred local!

This gentle giant is Grug the Emu.

Grug is almost ten months old, he hatched at the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park on the 5th of November 2022. Grug was raised here at Raptor Domain and is a goofy addition to our shows.

Emu's are Australia's tallest bird species, almost reaching 2m tall! The emu is the sole living member of the Dromaiidae family. Although Kangaroo Island is not home to the Emu, it once had its very own species, the Kangaroo Island Emu. The KI Emu was a dwarf Emu unfortunately the species became extinct around 1827.

Have you seen the ladies from Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery featured in the Advertiser? A lovely little piece under the Advertisers '80 innovative business women in South Australia'.

We couldn't agree more. Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery is one of our most highly recommended places to visit on the island and these ladies are a large part why.

Well done Bev, Tiffany and Melissa!

https://www.kangarooislandvisitorcentre.com.au/experiences

Kangaroo Island Tourism South Australia South Australian Tourism Commission Tourism Industry Council South Australia - TICSA Kangaroo Island Visitor Information Centre Kangaroo Island Council Kangaroo Island

You will find us ladies in The Advertiser under *80 innovative business women in South Australia*

They say invention comes from adversity and Bev and her husband Larry Turner started what would become a revival of a long-forgotten industry on Kangaroo Island in 1991, opening their family business Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery.

Thirty two years later, their youngest daughter Tiffany is the retail manager and oldest daughter Melissa is manager of the cafe.

"Mel is our oldest daughter and she has helped out and worked in our business her since she was 5 years old. She has travelled and has had other work here and there but has always been apart of what we do. On top of this she also has her own businesses teaches swimming, and is a qualified beauty and massage therapist, so a busy lady who now enjoys being the manager of our busy cafΓ©.

Tiff our youngest daughter was a baby when we started our business. She has always helped out, and later if she was home for weekends or in school holidays but Tiff loved the city life and started her own business as a children’s entertainer and teaching School Dance programs for 10 years. She has come back to Kangaroo Island with her husband and family and is getting used to country life and is the manager of our retail shop which has taken a big load off of me.

I believe it definitely is a successful business but still hard work with staffing issues, Covid and lack of overseas visitors.” Bev said

The distillery is a popular attraction on Kangaroo Island and also offers Eucalyptus oil and other products for sale.
