53 penguins at least tonight! (7 of them were chicks). At the moment we are seeing mostly in the 20s and 30s, and a few nights in the 40s and now 50s (new record, for the recent years). Tour guide Kerensa spotted 49 the other night with multiple rafts coming in as well!

We were lucky enough to see 2 rafts of them in the water (one group of about 20, the other group of about 10).

Now is a great time to come on a tour with chicks needing to be fed regularly!

We have started numbering burrows to help with data collection and information sharing. This particular burrow is pretty special, and as you can see, there is a big mess from the chicks! The parents walked up the pathway together last night to return to their little ones.

The penguins are all loved up and well into round two of breeding this year.

Burrow check with Brogan-Li & Alana:
27 chicks in burrows today
26 adults in burrows today
2 eggs in a burrow with no parent. We are hoping these eggs will be okay, time will tell in the coming weeks.

45 chicks in total have already fledged for the year, so a total of 72 chicks (if they all successfully fledge). There are still more pairs to lay eggs aswell.

We have started seeing a few of the chicks on tour, but more will start to appear soon.

A pair (presume new) have started using one of the new burrows which we are chuffed about.

Rosemary & Alana did a burrow check today and here are the stats:

26 adults seen
16 chicks seen (9 sets of parents having 2nd clutch of penguins).

45 chicks have fledged so far!! Terrific news! Predicting around 80 chicks will fledge by the end of January, maybe more.

Absolutely wonderful! Happy penguins.

Would be great if you can provide feedback! The bulk of the penguin colony are in the areas above H, E, C & A. The upgrades are not being done in the penguin areas.

- We are recommending speed bumps to slow down vehicles.
- We are recommending any noisey works to be undertaken around the month of February once all the chicks have gone and most penguins are out at sea for their annual holiday.
- We would prefer vehicles to travel along Bay Terrace and not North Terrace
- You could ask how they are going to support the penguin colony & mention the colony is increasing and has been for the last 6 years. The business is important for the local economy and provides employment and educational opportunities. It's important to get a healthy balance of conservation & tourism.

Thanks!

β›΄ The Department for Infrastructure and Transport has been working on a Draft Master Plan for the Penneshaw Harbour Precinct - you can now view the draft and provide your feedback here: https://www.dit.sa.gov.au/infrastructure/road_projects/master-planning-for-harbour-precincts

As the gateway to Kangaroo Island, it's really important the Penneshaw Harbour Precinct is efficient, safe and future-proofed for use by locals and visitors alike. Your feedback is key to getting the plan right!

You can give your feedback by filling in a survey available via the link above or in-person at two drop-in community information sessions at the Penneshaw Town Hall:
- Friday 20 September 2024 anytime between 4pm and 6pm
- Saturday 21 September 2024 anytime between 10am and 12pm

πŸ—£Feedback is open until Sunday 6 October 2024. Make sure to have your say!

Consistent higher numbers of penguins (20s-30s), but always better to expect lower just in case an unexpectedly quiet night. The penguin numbers are consistently higher because it is the middle of the breeding season. September tours start at 7pm, but October will jump up to 8:30pm so September is more suitable for younger families.

Turn on The Block now on Channel 9 to see a penguin related challenge!

Back in November 2022 Alana visited Philip Island and helped (well learned!!) with some penguin field research and met some terrific penguin people! Paula was one of them!

Burrow check this morning!

28 burrows with penguins in them! (This is excellent)
28 adults seen
11 chicks seen (all 1st clutch)
35 chicks have fledged so far

Parent sitting on 2 eggs (second clutch for the season! And very quickly after their chick fledged as well).

Great to see burrows being used that haven't had anyone in them for a long time. Handful more in natural burrows (in rocks).

Loads of noise on tour last night, we saw at least 32 penguins, heard more. Penguins in odd spots as well (likely new to the area). A few quieter tours some nights as well, but overall the season is going very well.

We are looking for 1-2 new, regular guides to add to our great team! Please get in contact πŸ™‚πŸ§
