Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre

Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre Artists, winemakers, and other creative types fondly call this region home, but Penola is perhaps best known for its former residents.

Penola & Coonawarra combine cultural heritage with historic charm, yet also remains highly progressive thanks to an eclectic mix of cafes, galleries and boutique-style shops. Particularly Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who is Australia’s first Saint and co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with Father Julian Tension Woods. Also gaining endless inspiration were Poets John

Shaw Neilson, Adam Lindsay Gordon and Will Ogilvie. Coonawarra – Australia’s Red Wine Centre can be found several minutes down the road, this world famous wine region pays homage to another forebear, Scottish pastoralist John Riddoch. And takes its name from the Aboriginal word “honeysuckle”, Coonawarra’s famous strip of rich, red terra rossa soil sitting atop deep limestone beds has given rise to many of the nations finest drops, with a worldwide reputation for unique flavour and quality. Cabernet sauvignon has become the region’s flagship drop, and Coonawarra has won more Jimmy Watson trophies for Australia’s best one-year-old red wine than any other wine district. Samples can be savoured at the cellar doors – all within around 10 minutes’ drive of one another. Each contains its own captivating stories, stunning architecture, and irresistible flavours.

🌿 This Friday, April 25 is

The annual service to honour the fallen and all who served will be held in Penola from 730am at the War Memorial Park

Wattle Range Council wishes to advise that in Penola the following roads will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 10.00 am - Church Street (from Bowden Street to Riddoch Street) & Young Street (from Queen Street to Church Street

In the meantime it’s time to get baking!

Whether your preference is chewy or crunchy it wouldn’t be without ANZAC biscuits

There’s nothing so Australian as an ANZAC biscuit, and most families have their own recipe handed down through the generations. These golden, oaty treats are an Aussie tradition that have endured the test of time

During the war the biscuits were often baked to raise funds and an appropriate name helped sell them. They became ‘Red Cross biscuits’ or ‘Soldiers’ Biscuits’ and were often sent in care packages to the troops overseas. Without eggs, the biscuits kept well even on the long sea voyages of the day

biscuits are easy to cook and even easier to eat, so why not get into the ANZAC spirit and bake up a batch this ANZAC Day

Better still join the Coonawarra & Penola RSL for their gunfire breakfast for a small donation following the service at the Hall and you might just get to taste one there!

Arthur's Coonawarra Vineyard is named after owner Anne-Marie Williams maternal Grandad - Arthur Hoffmann, a touching way for her to honor and acknowledge him as one of the early pioneers of the Coonawarra Wine industry.

Being active in the industry until 87 years of age, witnessing huge changes from hard manual labor to mechanical ease in viticulture Arthur was very passionate about Coonawarra wines and vineyards, so much so the annual Limestone Coast Wine Show present the Arthur Hoffmann Viticulturalist of the Year award.

Arthur also loved all things Penola Coonawarra proudly being Club Patron of Penola Football Club, a Horse Racing racegoer and horse owner, devotee of St Cedd’s Anglican Church, and loved sharing a glass of red and having a chat. His positive spin on life and going through lots of challenges continues to inspire the family.

PRODUCTS INCLUDE: Vine leaf tea, Cabernet Paste, Sweet topping and a mild or chilli Savoury sauce

Another fantastic product of the Wattle Range Council area that we are pleased to stock. Perfect to send home with guests, as a momento of the region or enjoy for yourself.
