Omarama Hot Tubs

This could not have been more perfect for the tired legs after the climb up Lake Benmore.

The Tubs are wood fired and filled with glacial water and are in a private location overlooking the lake. So relaxing!

This is a must do when in Omarama.

The Benmore Peninsula

A 4km loop circuit and takes around 1.5 hours to complete. It is not a particularly physically demanding hike, but beautiful nonetheless. On a good weather day, the water on Lake Benmore will appear to be bright turquoise and you will be able to see Mount Cook in the distance.

The little motivational message at the top was a welcome find! ❤️

Florence Hill Lookout

One of the most beautiful lookouts in the Catlins with sweeping views of Tautuku Bay. It's a breathtaking vantage point to take in the stunning atmosphere.

A worthwhile stop just for the views and even the cows appreciate the scenery!

Pūrākaunui Falls

Framed by native forest and cascading 20 metres over 3 tiers, the Pūrākaunui Falls are among the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. The sound of the birds and the rushing water is so peaceful!

Located just 17kms south of Ōwaka is the Pūrākaunui Falls Scenic Reserve. The Pūrākaunui Falls are a short walk from a car park area which takes around 20 minutes.

Highly recommend a visit to these Falls!

Chasing Waterfalls. First stop McLean Falls

McLean Falls is a 22m waterfall making it one of the tallest in the Catlins Forest Park by the Southern Scenic Drive in the Otago Region of New Zealand.

A great spot to stop, stretch your legs and see these unmissable Falls which is only a 30 min walk.

Gemstone Beach!

This Beach is known for it's constant state of change from sand to stones with the storms and the tides. Semi-precious gems such as garnet, jasper, quartz and nephrite can often be found on the beach!

The best time to visit Gemstone Beach is below half tide.

Originally known by Maori as "Aropaki Beach", travellers are welcome to take a pebble or two as a remembrance of their visit.

Lake Marian

What started out as a lovely scenic walk past the waterfalls and greenery..then became a uphill hike through rocky streams and suddenly there was snow!

As the temperature dropped quickly and unfortunately not a lot of waterproof clothing we quickly became sodden.

But...

It didn't matter because the winter wonderland was incredible and unexpected and the hike back down was challenging especially with wet clothing!

Wouldn't change a thing. It was the most amazing experience. Will post some videos soon!

Key Summit Track

Our first hike in the South Island did not dissapoint!

The Key Summit Track is one of the best day walks along the Routeburn Track in Fiordland National Park, taking you through a stunning mossy forest before breaking out of the treeline for panoramic mountain views though we experienced a lot of cloud it was still picturesque.

As we climbed the cloud rolled in and we experienced some hail, snow and rain but it made the experience so much more worth it...this is what the south is about...the ever changing weather conditions!

This is a great 8.2km return hike...just make sure you take rainproof gear with you!

Arrowtown is known for its beautiful, historic buildings that ooze charm and character.

We stayed one night in Arrowtown at the lovely Arrowtown Motel.

After the long flight we did a walk around Lake Hayes which was a memorable place we used to visit throughout our childhood. The walk was refreshing and loved seeing all the vibrant flowers that surrounded the lake.

Such a great place to visit and a great place to start our trip.

Discovering Lake Marian surrounded by snow. As we emerged from the snow covered track and treeline, we finally saw Lake Marian surrounded by snow ❄️ The mountains had a dusting of snow and as we stood there admiring this icy lake, we felt the snow lightly fall. The temperature was freezing, with the capture a little shaky but we couldn't take our eyes off this amazing winter wonderland.
