In the Kimberley region of north-western Australia, some rock art dates back an astonishing 41,000 to possibly 50,000 years, making it among the oldest human-made artworks on Earth. Created by Indigenous Australians, this ancient art is found in rock shelters, on boulders, and flat rock surfaces. Estimates suggest tens of thousands of sites, many still undiscovered.

The Gwion Gwion paintings, with their intricate details and dynamic poses, and the Wandjina spirits, with their large eyes and halo-like heads, showcase the diversity of styles. Artists used ochre pigments, carved into rock, applied beeswax and resin, and even arranged stones to create symbolic designs. Some scraped burnt earth to reveal contrasting colors.

The durability of these artworks is remarkable, thanks to ochre’s strong bond with sandstone and the remote locations that have protected them from vandalism. Indigenous Rangers and archaeologists work together to manage and protect these sites, ensuring their preservation.

📆 SAVE THE DATE NOONGAR COUNTRY 📆

As we continue to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we’re excited to announce the dates of this year’s Noongar Country exhibition.

Noongar Country 2024 will spread across Bunbury Regional Art Gallery and the City’s Administration Building from 7 September to 27 October, led by an impressive curatorial team of First Nations artists.

Whadjuk, Ballardong and Wilman Noongar woman Zali Morgan, Menang, Wardandi Noongar woman Katelyn Whitehurst and Badimia Yamatji and Yued Noongar woman Amanda Bell will be curating this year’s incredible exhibition.

The exhibition’s theme – Our Elders are our Pathfinders – will celebrate Elders showing the way and creating pathways for Noongar artists.

This year’s showcase will also pave the way for a new-look Noongar Country in 2025 when the flagship exhibition will take over the entirety of BRAG, providing greater space, voice, quality and recognition for First Nations artists.

We will share more details of this incredible group of First Nations curators in the lead-up to the exhibition, along with all the information on how you can immerse yourself in Noongar Country 2024.

Please keep an eye on BRAG’s website for further details https://www.bunbury.wa.gov.au/brag
