Do you know the origins of the phrase "telling a furphy"? 🤔

Before water coolers, there was the Furphy Water Cart. Produced by J. Furphy & Sons from the 1880s to the late 1900s, it became a staple for AIF troops before WWI, where soldiers would gather, share drinks, and swap stories—often stretching the truth! This gave rise to the Australian slang "telling a furphy" for an untrue story.

🪽 Calling all cockatoo lovers 🖤❤️

Armadale Settlers Common is the place to be! This nature-filled gem is home to the magnificent Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, and these giant cockatoos have personalities just as big as they are! Listen out for their loud squawks and keep an eye on the pathways for a trail of honkey-nuts (gum-nuts) – these beauties love to feast on the seeds of Marri and Jarrah trees, often dropping their leftovers below. A sure sign they’ve been around 😉

Fun fact: Both parents play an important role in raising their chicks! They prepare the nest together, with the female brooding for 2-3 weeks while the male brings her food. After the chick hatches, both parents continue feeding it, often long after it has grown 🪺

Throwback to Feb! 👈 Trail running in Wungong Regional Park 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

On Sunday 9 February, hundreds of runners gathered to tackle the trails of Wungong with Perth Trail Series. Participants embarked on three distances with the option of 5.2km, 10.5km and 15.6km to choose from.

Armadale's Historic Buildings - Armadale District Hall 🧐🏛️

Starting out as the Armadale Mechanics Institute in 1897, this iconic building has been the heart of the community for over a century! In 1936, it was replaced by the Armadale District Hall to keep up with the town’s growing population and bustling activities.

From weddings to dazzling balls, conferences, exhibitions, public meetings, and even a cinema until 1958 – this place has seen it all💍💃🎬

And though it underwent a beautiful renovation and extension in 2018, the Hall still proudly flaunts its original inter-war Art Deco style ✨

Here’s to the Hall that’s been bringing the community together for over 100 years! 🙌

Minnawarra Chapel hasn't always stood where it stands today... 🧐

The Chapel was built in 1903 on the corner of Church Avenue and Third Road where it was known as the Armadale Congregational Church. Sadly, it was demolished in 1988 to make way for shopping centre extensions.

Fortunately the passionate local community recognised its historical significance and managed to salvage all of the building materials and rebuilt the church in its current location within the Minnawarra Historic Precinct 🌿🍃

Landscapes we love 🍃

Located within Midgegooroo National Park, Boulder Rock is a massive granite outcrop with several large boulders. It's a spectacular landscape to witness and whilst there's no formal pathways or parking, it's a short stroll from the nearby road and suitable for those with reasonable fitness levels 👣

📍 HOW TO GET THERE: Pop 'Boulder Rock' into your google maps, OR travel through Roleystone and Karragullen up the Brookton Highway. The Rock is on the right side of Brookton Highway roughly 8.5 kilometres past the Chevin Road and Brookton Highway turnoff in Roleystone.

Snack time in the 60s - throwback to Deane's Snack Bar! 🍔🥪

Popular with the district’s young people, this hip local hangout used to reside in the spot where the current-day intersection of Armadale Road, Albany Hwy and South West Hwy now sits. Selling hamburgers and other fast food, it was a popular post movies treat and stopping place for those travelling through the district.

It had a cosy position close to the Neerigen Brook, on its own in a clearing with plenty of parking for punters.There was reportedly a telephone box nearby, so Deane's customers could make a call while waiting for a meal, or conversely people waiting for the phone could buy a snack.

Arthur Deane, a former professional boxer, operated the Snack Bar with his wife, Louisa, and their daughter, Shirley, from 1950 to approximately 1972.
