Ready for the Palio however it was not to be. A little rain interrupted. Hoping for for today.

Day 1 of the "4 Giorni del Palio", each Contrada is decorated with their flags and lamps, members gather proudly wearing their silk scarf given to them at their baptism. We strolled the streets and visited the Onda museum. At the end of the morning we gathered in the Campo to see the allocation of the horses. Immediately afterwards the the contrada captains negotiated to secure the best jockey. By the end of the day the deals were done (although a jockey can be changed up to the morning of the Palio).
Traditions defy the heat. The atmosphere is electric, the excitement is tangible, nerves are on edge.

Days 2 and 3 of our France and the Maritime Alps tour. Spectacular hiking in the Mercantour National Park. Pristine lakes, waterfalls and rivers. Carpets of wildflowers and lots of wildlife....ibex, chamois and marmots. Fantastic!
