Eastside Jetty & Swimming Pontoon Update!

We wanted to share an update on the Eastside Jetty and Swimming Pontoon project.

After the identification of some design challenges, there will be a delay in the anticipated opening. The good news is that the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, along with the Port Wakefield to Port Augusta Alliance, is set to begin work soon! This project will raise the piles to elevate the jetty deck above the mean high tide level, aiming to reduce the frequency of inundation during high tide events.

While it is acknowledged that the deck may still face potential inundation during extreme tides (just like the previous jetty), we’re hopeful that these adjustments will result in a much-improved experience for everyone.

Please note that the Council is not funding these works or the fenced area surrounding the project. We also want to emphasise that ownership of the jetty and pontoon will only be taken once all design matters are fully resolved.

We share the disappointment regarding the extended timeframe of installation, especially during the summer when access to the pontoon is highly anticipated for recreation.

Stay tuned for more updates as they come in! Thank you for your continued support!

CROWS HEADING TO SPENCER GULF

Adelaide is hitting the road and taking its pre-season to fans on the Spencer Gulf for the next three years.

The Crows are excited to announce a new partnership with Spencer Gulf Cities – which represents the regional cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla – to host the Club’s annual Community Camp and pre-season internal trial game.

The partnership begins next year with players to spend two days visiting schools and the community in Port Pirie, the home town of dual premiership captain Mark Bickley, and culminates with the internal trial game at Memorial Oval from February 13-14.

There will also be junior clinics, an open training and fan signing session and players will deliver the Crows Foundation’s mental health and education programs to local schools.

As part of the agreement, the Club’s regional visits will continue in Port Augusta in 2026 and Whyalla in 2027.

Crows CEO Tim Silvers acknowledged it was sometimes more challenging for regional members and fans to watch the team train or attend games.

“We are very fortunate to have supporters all over the state and this new partnership with Spencer Gulf Cities allows us to build greater connections and relationships with fans, partners and the wider football community across this really important region,” Silvers said.
“In addition to delivering our community programs, coaching clinics and a signing session, Crows fans will have the opportunity to watch our internal trial game which is a really important hit-out in preparation for the start of the season.”

Port Pirie Mayor and Spencer Gulf Cities Chair Leon Stephens said the regional cities were excited about the three-year partnership.
“The big attraction for us was the broad range of activities with a focus on community, our sporting clubs and schools,” Mayor Stephens said.

“The social and economic impacts for our towns that this partnership will deliver will be tremendous. Port Pirie is kicking it off in 2025, with Port Augusta in 2026 and Whyalla in 2027, and the camps will see all of our communities able to be engaged at some level in each year.”

🌱 Caltrop Alert: Stop the Spread Early! 🌱

🌦️ After the good rains in November and December, caltrop (with the dreaded three-corner jack prickle) is popping up everywhere! Act now before they become a painful nuisance for feet, tyres, kids, and pets. Here’s how to tackle them effectively:

Step 1: Catch Them Early
• 🌱 Young Plants: Pluck them out early (within 1-3 weeks of summer rain) before they flower and set seeds.
• 🔍 Identify Early Growth: Look for the small, low-lying green leaves before they spread. (Here’s what they look like when they first appear 👇).

Step 2: Avoid Common Mistakes
• ❌ Don’t Rely on Roundup Alone:
o It doesn’t kill the seeds (jacks/prickles).
o It takes weeks to work, and the plants may set more seeds in the meantime.
• ✅ Physical Removal is Key:
o Pull the plants when green to keep most seeds attached.
o Use a broom and pan to sweep up any loose prickles. Dispose of plants and seeds in a sealed bin—don’t compost them!

Step 3: Prioritize and Tools of Choice
• 🛤️ Start with High-Traffic Areas: Focus on clearing main walkways to protect people and pets.
• 🔨 Best Tool for the Job:
o A stirrup hoe works wonders! Its blade dips into the soil a few centimetres to cut the root below ground, causing minimal soil disturbance. It’s quick, efficient, and perfect for mass removal.

🌼 Older Caltrop: Watch for their yellow flowers and sprawling vines—this is when they’re setting seeds!

💦 Remember: Caltrop germinates after every summer rain. Eradication depends on acting fast, so strike hard 1-3 weeks after rain!

The regional hub - Port Augusta

Port Augusta City Council is located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia and includes Stirling North and the seaside homes located at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda and has a population of almost 14,000 people. Council acknowledges and respects the traditional owners, their ancestors and the sharing of lands on which Port Augusta is situated.

Called ‘the crossroads of Australia’ because roads from Sydney to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin all pass through Port Augusta. This regional hub, where the Outback meets the ocean, is a major tourism, shopping, government and service centre. Getting to Port Augusta is easy with multiple air services, seven day bus service to and from Adelaide, and The Ghan and Indian Pacific railway service passing through. The city offers a vibrant range of cafés, pubs and restaurants and accommodation.

There are a range of attractions for the whole family including the Wadlata Outback Centre. To get the whole story on the region, creep through the jaws of Max, a giant Ripper lizard, to begin a journey through the Flinders Ranges & Outback’s ‘Tunnel of Time’. There’s the nationally-accredited Port Augusta Visitor Information Centre onsite where you can find out more about the region, and book tours and accommodation.

See an amazing array of arid zone plants and one of Australia’s most significant collections of Eremophilas at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Open daily, it is also home to more than 100 native bird species. Stroll through the AridSmart Display Gardens to discover how to create your own native garden. The visitor centre has a café, serving native-flavoured food and regional wines, as well as a gift and garden shop.
