HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Port Fairy Ghost Stories Project!

To welcome 2025, we are releasing a new audio ghost tour on our website. It is a TOWN WALK that includes many of the locations that feature in Port Fairy’s famous ghost stories.

The tour costs $20 for 24 hours of access and is available from our SHOP page. We suggest you gather with family and friends to listen to these accounts of our chilling, thrilling tales, and check out the locations when you’re sightseeing during the day.

And don’t forget the FREE audio ghost tour on our GHOST TOUR page, which features stories from locations on the perimeter of the town.

Our audio tour offerings are prototypes that are still in development, so we welcome any suggestions you may have for future improvements.

Best wishes to everyone for the year ahead!

Emails are timestamped and the voucher will go to the first correct response.

I am Australia’s most famous ghost,
But you probably don’t recognise that fact.
I haunt the Combo Waterhole in Kynuna, Queensland,
Where I died after being caught in the act.
Who am I?

This promotion is dedicated to the memory of Oliver Cassidy, a long-time champion of our ghostie project. All our love to the Cassidy family at this difficult time.

Happy Halloween from the Port Fairy Ghost Stories Project!

To celebrate Halloween, we are releasing a FREE audio ghost tour on our website.

It is the first prototype of some audio tours we are developing for visitors to the town.

We are working towards a professional presentation so please excuse the many scary slip ups for now. A professional level of audio will be available soon.

In this development stage we are eager to hear any feedback you may have. We know we can count on our audience for some great ideas!

Port Fairy Ghost Stories Inc. is very excited to announce a further $15,000 grant from the Moyne Shire Council Community Assistance Fund for the digitisation of early Port Fairy (Belfast) newspapers.

The Moyne Shire Council has generously matched an earlier grant from the Public Records Office Victoria (State Government), a personal donation by Pamela Marriott and a modest contribution from Port Fairy Ghost Stories Inc. to fund the third stage of our project plan.

The project’s aim is to fund the digitisation of Port Fairy’s early newspapers through to 1913.

The National Library of Australia made a significant effort to digitise local newspapers from 1914-1918 to TROVE for the Centenary Commemorations of WWI. TROVE is a free online resource developed and maintained by the National Library of Australia that ensures these newspapers are preserved for future generations and can be easily accessed by researchers and family historians the world over.

We will continue to provide information as the project progresses, particularly as we reach important milestones such as this announcement.

Port Fairy Ghost Stories Inc. gratefully acknowledges the Moyne Shire Council and the Community Assistance Fund for its significant contribution.

The project is a collective effort and we would also like to thank Pamela Marriott, Angela Northcott, the Public Record Office Victoria, the National Library of Australia, the State Library of Victoria, Claudia Matthews and Lynda Tieman.

Port Fairy Ghost Stories Inc. is very excited to announce we have been successful in obtaining a grant in Round 22 of the Victorian Government’s Local History Grant Program.

The grant was allocated for the digitisation of The Belfast Gazette to 1890 for inclusion on TROVE.

A big thank you to Claudia Matthews our librarian at the Port Fairy Library and Lynda Tieman from the Port Fairy Historical Society for their assistance with reconciling our local newspaper microfilm resources.

The application was a collective effort and included the assistance of specialists at the State Library of Victoria and TROVE (National Library of Australia).

We view this grant as the first step in what we hope will be a continuing effort to digitise Port Fairy’s newspapers into the 20th century. The project will require an ongoing commitment from all of us and support from local funding sources if we are to achieve this goal.

TROVE is a state of the art database that makes these important resources available for free to users across the globe. We expect it to be a boon for researchers and family historians, with many new stories coming to light about our town.

Port Fairy Ghost Stories Inc. gratefully acknowledges the Local History Grants Program and Public Record Office Victoria, supported by the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund.
