Huon Yacht Club

Huon Yacht Club At Huon Yacht Club we love sailing and boating on the beautiful Huon River in Tasmania. Why not come and join us and share the fun?

HISTORY OF THE HUON YACHT CLUB

For many years the main form of transport in HuonValley was by boat. Small sailing ships would transport local produce and residents to the main markets in Hobart. Sailing skills were highly developed, which led to competition between the boats. In 1852, the first Huon Regatta was held at Shipwrights Point. The undoubted success of this regatta is well recorded, an

d over the years this regatta developed as the social event of the year. Up to 10,000 locals and visitors would enjoy the day’s activities both on and off the water at the Shipwrights Point Regatta Ground. The high diving tower has gone and the rowing has moved to Franklin, but sailing and cruising is still very much part of the clubs weekly activities. Several yacht clubs have existed at various times on the banks of the HuonRiver, but the present club was formed on 29th October 1947. A pick up boat was offered by a local resident, and racing started within a fortnight. Since then club members have enjoyed many successes sailing both at home and internationally. The clubhouse was built by club members and was officially opened on 12th October 1957. The starter’s box, located on the top of the clubhouse, is a unique feature of the building, providing a perfect view for the officials on race day. The club has a strong future, and looks forward to continuing its tradition of sailing vessels on the Huon River, D’Entrecasteaux Channel and as far afield as the wind will take them.

Dear Fellow Members,

Thankyou to all the members who participated, volunteered and worked over the last few days to make the HYC Open Day a success today.

We had patchy weather but more sun than the weather prediction had suggested, allowing some eight vessels to take part. Following the Sailpast every vessel took part in the Time trial course which qualified the Skippers for entry into a raffle with two $100 dollar vouchers with Franklin Marine up for grabs.

Following the single lap in some varied weather some twenty Skippers crew and others arrived at the Clubhouse for the traditional snags and some Salmon capably BBQ'd by John Flowers. The Salmon was kindly provided by Huon Aquaculture.

There was also a great many member volunteers from Lorrie for Coleslaw and preserves, Penny for great decorations on the nibbles table, Robbie for the main BBQ, Suzannah and James who ran the bar, and everyone who stepped up to ensure not a scrap of the Chocolate Mud cake escaped. ( if I have forgotten to mention anyone - thankyou too!)

The two raffle tickets were drawn by Patron Ian, and won by Jack Witte from Io, and Will Meure from Gem. Congratulations Gentlemen!

There have been several photos sent in by Lorri , Penny and myself which we will post a link to shortly.

A great start to the Season. Congratulations and thanks again to everyone who came along!

Reminder : Open Day 2024

"The Program for the Open Day is a relaxed start at 10am when an assortment of vessels (both motor and sail ) will take a salute, then a Time Trial with a BBQ following around 12 midday.

The intent is that vessels will gather downstream and proceed north to commence passing the Yacht Club from 10 am ( this means you should be aiming to be ready to proceed by at least 9:45). Once the fleet has gathered the usual horns will sound along with radio announcements for a massed start. The Course will be Course A. Further details to follow.

A raffle will be held for the skippers for a $100 voucher with Franklin Marine on return to the Clubhouse. All skippers are encouraged therefore to return to the Clubhouse.

there will be a BBQ ( snags and salmon), nibbles and the traditional Cake. ( please feel free to bring nibbles).

Due to the vagaries of weather these times may slip a little. The Bureau of Meteorology promises us a shower two so if you have any influence over the weather it would be greatly appreciated.

The BoM has a flood alert for the Huon. See the photos below from the public ramp and looking out from the Clubhouse.

Last nights Patron's Drinks were well patronised by members and visitors alike. Nibbles were nibbled, drinks drunk (in moderation) and the hubbub of conversation was a joy to hear. Thank you Patron Ian for his able bar work and thank you to the providers of nibbles. It was also good to see Gary and Mike from Cygnet (PCYC) who also came to chat about interclub opportunities. Fair Winds indeed!

Time Trial No 4 was completed today. Conditions started out most unpleasantly with cold showers but fortunately the day improved steadily. Well done the crews of Mistral, Blue Moon, and Gem who motored and Wirraway, and the mysterious visitor who took advantage of the north westerly breeze. Thanks again to John W for organising the Trial, for Lyn, Lorrie, Robbie and Penny for BBQ and nibbles, and everyone else who joined in good company.

Time Trial 3, 7th July '24, Report

Sunday's Time trial No 3 came with a foggy and chilly start. Nevertheless we ended up with 4 active participants with 2 apologies.

Mistral and Acacia made the start time with Wiraway and Gretchen starting a little later. Delays due to conditions are something that a time trial can easily forgive, and it was pleasing to see a variety of vessels taking part and a variety of propulsion choices made. The challenge after all is to be able to achieve the two laps as close as possible to your nominated time.

The fog lifted intermittently, apparently needing to practice. This in spite of a light but steady north easterly which kept the yacht clubs flags streaming steadily.

The estimates and performance were an entertainment in the starters box. The timekeeper even had a moment or two spare to chop onions for the BBQ.

Following the event skippers and crew returned to the clubhouse for a BBQ, drink and a chat in something resembling sunshine. The atmosphere remained chilly but the comeradery was warm. Thankyou to John Flowers for organising the event and thanks to everyone else who contributed. (Great cake Lorri!)

Gretchen walked away with the prize. Thanks to Gretchen and crew for braving the mists and the shoals downriver from Franklin. Her gaff rig looked splendid in contrast to the bare poles and bermudan rig of the other contenders.

Given the chill we should be confident of higher numbers next time as the weather warms.

A few members took advantage of a brisk South Easter for a couple of laps before the afternoons Patrons Drinks.
Norlee took the start and held it through to the finish. Catriona and Valella swapped the lead for second place but sadly Valella started taking water and had to retire. Well done Catriona and Valella. JenZ had jib trouble but eventually managed a lap.
Thanks to Phil for ferry duties in Acacia, David for the barwork and Wendy for Starting ! Thanks also to everyone who brought nibbles. A great sailing and social evening!

Yesterdays Patron's Drinks lined up with the first race of Stuart's new race and voyaging program. Under overcast conditions which became increasingly atmospheric our contenders prepared for the mass start displaying various tactics from risky, calculated to cautious. Once underway all did their best helped along with a brisk breeze of some 6 to 8 knots (estimated). Precipitation was apparent further adding to the conditions. Back in the clubhouse nibbles were nibbled, drinks were drunk and the contenders cheered on. Results were Line Honors for Jenny and John in Skye, followed by Vellella and Acacia picking up a bottle of red for effort. The returning sailors received a warm welcome on their return with a cake emerging from the kitchen to celebrate Jenny's birthday. Some twenty odd members and guests sang, cheered and ate birthday cake. Thanks to Ian in the bar, and Suzannah and Wendy in the starters box. Great fun. Lets do it again!

Last night's Twilight Race was an improvement on the previous week's. The breeze seemed supportive at first and had the clubhouse flags streaming in a light nor' easter.

One of the skippers had suggested a mass start and from the clubhouse the view was spectacular. On the water the tactics for the final McLaren were being honed.

At the far mark alas there was confusion as the lead boat appeared unsure as to Port or Starboard. We have no idea of what was said on the water. Fortunately sound does not travel that far....

In the end, the breeze proved fickle, with only Catriona crossing the line as the others retired and motored home.

Thank you to skippers and crew for your stirling efforts under trying conditions. The vessels were Catriona, Halcyon, JenZ and Aqua Fae.

Last night's Twilight Race was a disappointment for wind and the tide was the other adversary. Given the conditions, it was nevertheless good to see the effort made by all. Thank you Halcyon, Catriona, Aqa Fae and JenZ, skippers and crew. There will be better days, and in consolation it was an idyllic sight.
