In 1867 seventy Port MacDonnell residents boarded the lifeboat Percy and two Lighters to greet Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was sailing past in the HMAS Galatea. The Port MacDonnell Water Tank is a dominant feature of the Bay skyline. The tank was originally manufactured for the Wallaroo Power and Alcohol Distillery in 1943, to store power alcohol in case of a petrol shortage during World War 11. It was never used for this purpose and was acquired in 1951 by the then Engineering and Water Supply Department who designed and built the stand.
