Who can remember playing on the jetty trolleys on the Port Mac Jetty when they were kids? Our very clever Committee President, Trevor Sheard has used an old photo to recreate one of the trolleys to add to the old jetty exhibit. It looks fantastic!

The Annual General Meeting of the Museum will be held Monday November 4th at 1pm in the Community Complex.

Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum welcomed another lovely group of visitors this week, the Lower South East Past Presidents Bowls Assoc. Group bookings and town tour bookings can be made by ringing the Port MacDonnell Community Complex.

Another great group of visitors to Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum this week. This time from Victoria with Spirit Tours. As part of their tour they had also booked a town tour. Committee members are always happy to hop on board and show off our lovely town.🙂

Meylin Street in 1875, when Port MacDonnell had a Bootmakers Shop next to the Victoria Hotel. Hard working Committee members are currently scanning Port MacDonnell Maritime Museums huge collection of old photos to create a digital record for generations to come.😍

In 1867 seventy Port MacDonnell residents boarded the lifeboat Percy and two Lighters to greet Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was sailing past in the HMAS Galatea. They ventured 15k's off shore to where the royal visitor ordered his vessel to 'lay to' so that he could greet the visitors. Just one of the interesting stories recorded in Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum. In the picture the Galatea is moored in Glenelg.

The Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum opened in October 1987 in the Institute building then into the Community Complex in 2012. Over the thirty-seven years the Museum has gone from strength to strength with a diverse collection of both maritime and local history. Visit us soon to appreciate new and old exhibits.

Our Spring weather is taking it's time to arrive but it is warm and dry inside Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum. As well as stories, displays and artefacts from shipwrecks, the Museum has numerous exhibits featuring local history. Sea Parade looked a little different in 1912!

In the early 1860's Messrs Embury, Feast and Griffiths commenced one of the first Wool Washes on Cress Creek. Visit the Museum to view this popular exhibit and read about this fascinating industry. The Wool Washes operated until 1914 when the steamers stopped coming to Port MacDonnell.

Some of the Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum Committee members are currently working on the huge task of scanning our very large collection of old photographs so that a digital record is created. Local residents may remember their Port MacDonnell school teachers in this photograph, taken in1953.

The Port MacDonnell Water Tank is a dominant feature of the Bay skyline. The tank was originally manufactured for the Wallaroo Power and Alcohol Distillery in 1943, to store power alcohol in case of a petrol shortage during World War 11. It was never used for this purpose and was acquired in 1951 by the then Engineering and Water Supply Department who designed and built the stand.

As well as the shipwreck exhibits the Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum also has displays and photographs documenting the history of the township. The Port MacDonnell Centenary Celebration Parade in 1960 drew a large crowd!

Port MacDonnell Museum volunteers have completed setting up the display in the Community Complex to commemorate the 165th Anniversary of the sinking of the SS Admella. You can sit on the comfy couches to view the Admella video playing on the large screen just inside the entrance. Visit the Museum to view the exhibit detailing this terrible tragedy and the heroics of those involved in the rescue operation.
